CONVERSATION OVERHEARD LAST WEEK:

CASHIER: So next week will be the last market, ok?
CUSTOMER: No, it is NOT okay!

We’ve had a blast bringing the market to you this year. And we love how much the neighbourhood has come out to be a part of it (and to volunteer!) But soon it’ll be time to put the farm to bed and take a good rest.

If you have come out to the market this year, we would kindly request you fill out our very quick end of year survey. Link in the bio.

What a lovely day for a harvest celebration! Yes, the farm salad was notable and the farm bouquets, but not more notable than the company.

Thanks to you, our incredible Flemo Farmers, partners, co-workers and volunteers who came out — and those who couldn’t, but have made a contribution great or small, to helping us run this beautiful space. Thank you also to the bugs, the plants, the creatures big and microscopic, and the Creator. We’ve been so blessed with everyone’s contribution and presence at Flemo Farm in 2023.

Sights at Flemo Farm in the plot: huitlacoche/corn s**t

“Corn s**t is a plant disease caused by the pathogenic fungus Ustilago maydis. One of several cereal crop pathogens called s**t, the fungus forms galls on all above-ground parts of corn species such as maize and teosinte. The infected corn is edible: in Mexico, it is considered a delicacy called huitlacoche,[4] often eaten as a filling in quesadillas and other tortilla-based foods, as well as in soups.”

“When corn s**t grows on a corn cob, it changes the nutritional worth of the corn it affects. Corn s**t contains more proteins than the uninfected grains normally do. The amino acid lysine, of which corn contains very little, abounds in corn s**t.”
