How to muzzle train your dog. "But my dog doesn't need it" Yes, they do. Muzzle training is something I believe every dog should have and here are **some unrelated to aggression** reasons why: 1. It's a relationship and trust building exercise for you both 2. Keeps your dog and other dogs or people safe if your dog can be unpredictable when overstimulated 3. Can keep your dog from picking up potentially dangerous things the shouldn't if they like to eat random things off the ground 4. If your dog is ever injured, in pain and needs to be handled by a stranger it keeps everyone involved safe 5. If the need ever arises having been trained with a muzzle will make the whole experience less stressful for them 6. Prevents your dog from biting the leash if they have a tendency to do so 7. Can help deter excessive mouthiness 8. Can help create space when out on walks so that you can focus on your dog and their training instead of being ambushed by that Karen with the flexi lead on her phone 9. Can give you as the handler the confidence you need to really help your dog reach their training goals And let's not forget: Muzzled dogs are not bad dogs, a muzzle shows an owner being responsible, keeping everyone safe and putting in the work to train their dog. Shaping vs. Luring 101
I definitely sabotaged us for this video by having my living room window open with a garbage truck outside but this is a really good demonstration of a dog that is unsure when I know she knows what I am asking. Nova has done this excercise many times over successfully but the noise was making her unsure and she attempted to opt out of the session a couple of times. I did stick with her a bit to help her through her nervousness but ended it based on her not wanting to continue and still made sure to end the excercise on a success.
It is important to give your dog the opportunity to opt out of training sessions; just like us, sometimes they just aren't feeling it and that's okay.
