5 Reps of Recall A Day keeps the Chase Mes Away!
⭐️
If you practice 5 reps (or more) of recall everyday you are taking a big step towards getting in those necessary repetitions that overtime result in more reliable and enthusiastic recalls!
⭐️
There’s nothing fancy about achieving these results. It’s practice!
⭐️
Consider this, it’s not the ‘word’ come, or the whistle that gets your pup flying back to you. It’s the history BEHIND the word. It’s the countless repetitions, the practice.
➡️ A doable recipe to help you along the way.
✅ Daily, multiple reps
✅ Reinforcement your pup LOVES following each rep
✅ Only calling for fun things
✅ Only call when you feel there’s a high probability they’ll come running
Halloween tip for puppy people 🎃 Leave the pup home!

What if you spent 10 mins before your morn pup walk and played? ⭐️
Here are a just a few of the benefits… ⭐️ Bond building, skill building, exercise for you. A dose of canine enrichment, an essential part of life to attend to your pup’s mental health. ⭐️
Resist the rut! ⭐️ Get into the habit of playing with your puppy in the morn instead of JUST walking around the block. ♥️

Tug is a great game to play daily!
⭐️
It’s…
Fun
Energy burning
Boredom busting
Puppy soul soothing
Bonding
⭐️
If you set a timer you are more likely to get a suitable amount of playtime in!
⭐️
I joke around with students that a 3 minute tug game will be the longest 3 minutes of the day. They are surprised to realize that often they’re not playing with their pup for very long!
⭐️
Let the pup play until they’ve had enough.
⭐️
Play daily
Play on longline walks
⭐️
Focus on the puppy having fun with the tug, growl and shake!
⭐️
Growling is normal and healthy!
⭐️
Use a long tug (3-5 feet)
This gives enough room between your hand and puppy teeth.
⭐️
Keep toy low. Play low.
⭐️
Act as more of an anchor for the toy. With occasional wiggle and push. As though the toy was alive and trying to get away.

Bedding - let your PUP choose!
⭐️
Imagine having a heavy blanket on top that you can’t kick off if you get too hot.
⭐️
Given the choice, many pups prefer the cool floor to heavier bedding.
⭐️
When you place a thick, heavy weight bed in a crate the pup can’t move it around.
⭐️
This can be frustrating.
⭐️
If your pup uses a crate opt for a light weight towel or blanket inside so they can arrange the bedding how THEY prefer!
⭐️
They can move it around with their nose or paws.
⭐️
Digging, burrowing, or pushing it out of the way, arranging it just right - for them!
Hey Puppy People! 👋
If you have a yard, hose and a water loving puppy, teaching these skills is worth the effort. ⭐️ Teach a ‘hose’ cue - which means you can play in/with the water stream ⭐️An ‘all done’ cue which means now I need to use hose for something else, you can go do _____fill in the blank. ⭐️Teach a recall cue away from the hose. ⭐️ There are many possible combos of things to teach so your pup doesn’t become ‘obsessive’ about the hose⭐️ Prevent your pup from becoming fixated on, grabbing, barking, biting, etc. when you want to use it for cleaning, gardening or to cool your own self off! 💦 Backyard skills! ♥️
Hey Puppy People! 👋
Spring brings new wildlife. ⭐️ I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to spot several fledglings in my backyard already ⭐️ If you have a backyard with bushes, tall grasses, vines, spots fledglings will seek out and settle, keep an eye out for them.⭐️ They start out on the ground and puppy accessible. ⭐️ Prevent pup from interacting and potentially harming. ♥️
Hiya Puppy People! ⭐️ We can't change the weather but we can adjust our plans! ⭐️ The environment is always something to consider as you work away teaching your puppy 'all the things'. ⭐️ This includes the weather! ⭐️ Sometimes moving from the sun to the shade will make all the difference.⭐️ Same goes for finding the most sheltered spot for a potty break if it's raining or windy. ⭐️
Are there any adjustments you can experiment with that may make it easier for your pup to focus or learn?
Why bother teaching skills surrounding backdoor and yard? ⭐️ To prevent unwanted behavior down the road! ⭐️ With some forethought and easy plans you can teach your puppy to exit and check in, and to follow you back inside! ⭐️ If you neglect to teach your pup these skills there is a high probability charging out the door and barking, along with ignoring your pleas when you need to head back inside are the behaviors you end up with instead. ⭐️Which do you prefer?

Hey Puppy People! 👋
Although we live closely together you can take your pick from this small sampling of ways our preferences differ from our dogs. ⭐️ Enjoying a taste of cat poo, the allure of rolling on dead birds, smelling butts and jumping on strangers to say hi.
Then there are less obvious things like home design. 🏠
Sometimes environments that we find aesthetically pleasing aren’t compatible with our dog’s needs. Hardwood and polished tile floors are popular among people these days but if you were to offer your dog flooring options to choose from it’s doubtful he would pick the slippery options - perhaps instead opting for surfaces like stone or rough tile, stay put rugs or rubber - glorious rubber!
When we understand it is difficult and uncomfortable for our dogs to navigate slippery surfaces we can make some small changes in the environment to provide them with comfort.
The power of one step at a time, or baby steps! Wonderful short read from Mary Hunter. ❤️
Behavior multiplies. Let me explain what this means. When you have a well-designed shaping program that is appropriate for your learner, behavior change can happen exponentially. Imagine you are teaching your horse (or dog or other critter) to walk next to you without a leash or lead rope.
👋Hey Puppy People! ⭐️ We owe it to our puppies, vets and groomers to ensure our dogs can tolerate routine handling needs. ⭐️ Did you know it is not unusual for dogs to start to fret the vet visit as time goes on? ⭐️ Work with a great coach to learn how to prevent this from happening.
👋Hey Puppy People!
Mind the gaps in the flow of the day. ⭐️ In the gap or lag time, if you don’t arrange things well, a puppy will make puppy choices. ⭐️ Some unpopular. ⭐️ Unwanted behaviors cease to be a problem when you mind the gap. ⭐️ Unwanted HABITS are less likely to develop. ⭐️ Utilize smart management strategies now. ⭐️ Keep things UN-fussed.

Hey Puppy People! 👋
It can be tempting to head towards other folks out walking with their dog. ⭐️ It may surprise you to learn that many dogs need space and are uncomfortable when other dogs come towards them or get too close. ⭐️ Best practice is to give dogs space. ⭐️ Spend sidewalk time building comfort with passing other dogs without interacting. ⭐️ This way it’s also less likely your adolescent dog will lie down and not budge when he sees other dogs on your walks. 🥳

Lu Moves ♥️ I started teaching this behavior with a lure. Faded the lure to a hand target then gradually faded the hands - I want my step to be the cue for her to weave. Right now it’s a combination of step and verbal- I’ll work to fade the verbal. #fun #actionplan . . . . . . . . . . . . . #pomeranian #pom #pomeraniansofinstagram #pomeranianworld #dance #freestyle #toronto #torontodogs #freshpuppytraining
