Brown dog ticks are notorious for infesting homes!
Once brought inside via unprotected pets, female ticks will drop off of their host to lay their egg mass (1000-3000 eggs), potentially causing an explosion of immature ticks in just a few short weeks.
While brown dog ticks do not transmit the bacteria responsible for Lyme disease they can serve as vectors of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, canine Ehrlichiosis and canine Babesia, which can cause symptoms including fever, bleeding disorders and systemic shock.
Ticks are gross. Please use protection :)
Food puzzles and toys will help your pet live longer!
An interesting study from Vanderbilt University has revealed that longevity is actually governed by brain health.
Researchers examined more than 700 warm-blooded animal species and discovered that animals with more neurons in the cerebral cortex live longer, regardless of their body size.
Itโs feeding time. Is your family protected?
Canada continues to see an increase in tick numbers and with it an upsurge in tick-borne diseases. Lyme disease is still the most common but we can now add Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis, and Powasson virus to the list of tick worries.
The most effective way to prevent tick-borne disease is to not get bitten. A tick is very small and can range in size from a poppy seed to a small grape. Ticks do not jump or fly but instead glide down or crawl onto passing humans and animals.
In Canada it is estimated that 1 in 5 deer ticks carry the bacteria that is responsible for Lyme disease. However in areas where these ticks have been established for a number of years, as many as 40% of them carry the bacteria. If you would like to learn please visit https://ticktalkcanada.com/
DEAR CLIENTS,
Today, the Ontario Government has announced that all non-essential services must close their doors Tuesday at 11:59pm. Veterinary medicine is NOT deemed to be an essential service in Ontario under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act. We will find out tomorrow if Veterinary Clinics will get to be an exception to the rule. The Ontario Veterinary Medical Association is working hard on our behalf to get us deemed essential. It is LIKELY that we WILL be an essential service. Watch this space.
