Everyday settling more into fall and saying goodbye to all my plant friends as they shift their energy back to their roots. I’m so excited to eat Sunchokes but I want to keep my flowers for as long as I can 😋🌻
Bees are still out, but the girls are cozying up more in their hives, now that they’ve kicked the boys out 🤣
I’m busting out my books and crafts, hibernation here I come!

Just smitten over this Double Red Sweet Corn from

Every year I fall in love with new fun varieties of plants I’ve never heard of and last winter, I was all about this gorgeous corn.
I can’t wait to eat the kernels AND drink up some medicinal corn silk tea ☕️

Which varieties were you drawn to this year?

🌎 Happy Earth Day 🌎
We made plans to go to the zoo but Mother Nature decided she wanted to celebrate with snow and rain, which is totally cool, so we cozied up and indoor gardened 🌱 Anyone else love the sprouting stage and after that just want their babies to grow up as fast as possible?! I’m getting so excited to really garden outside!!! 4 more weeks until LAST FROST 🙌🏼

🌱 Last season...I grew this Lavender from SEED! It was one of my wins. I honestly thought it wouldn’t germinate and wouldn’t bloom, but it actually caught up to the greenhouse Lavender I bought in spring!

Every year, I learn a little more about the boundaries I can push as a gardener growing food in Zone 3.

Have you grown something that challenged you as a gardener?

🌱 So many varieties 🌱
This is my “narrowed down” lil’ collection of Basils 🌿 I have a thing for diversification and maybe a teensy tiny hard time choosing between varieties 🙈

A few years ago I studied Social Work that morphed into a passion for food and how it’s effected our past, present and future,
how it plays a giant part in all our social and environmental issues.

When I first started gardening, I thought it was a nice little hobby but learning about food sovereignty, food security, and seed diversification changed everything.

Food is so powerful.

To my favourite seed suppliers 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you! herbs

🌱 This is tradition in a picture 🌱

One of my favourite childhood memories was sitting with my Grandma while she p*eled beets. It always seemed like playing to me, how her fingers would get all stained purple and we’d laugh about how it would make you p*e and p**p red too 😂

It’s funny how those tiny moments can mean so much and why the heck teaching my kid to p*el beets is so special to me, but it really is the little things.

🌱 Aren’t they just beautiful? Look at them. So pretty.

10 years ago I found out about fermenting and I lost my mind making everything fermented 🤣 kombucha, milk kefir, water kefir, sauerkraut, curtido, kimchi, apple cider vinegar, sourdough, even lacto fermented ketchup. I was a little obsessed.

Having babies (and less time for all the things) helped me narrow down my favourites. And now I’m coming back to good old Beet Kvass. Mmm tasty probiotics.

What are your favourite fermented foods?

🌱 Ok full disclosure, we are cozy inside homeschooling because it’s -100...but when it’s less crazy cold, we like to do the rounds of our favourite parks. Seeing them in all the seasons is always so interesting.

Being a homeschooling parent means the word “socializing” comes up sometimes. Yeah it’s important to socialize with other people, we do that. But I also want my kids to socialize with the nature around them. I want them to really know their neighbourhood, their neighbours, the people, plants and animals.

🌱 Remember this? New calendula flowers everyday and bees buzzing around while you enjoy your garden? If you’re in the middle of a northern winter like us, it probably feels like forever ago.

Today me and the kids were talking about running outside in bare feet (we decided it’s still worth it...even if there’s a good chance we’d get a bee sting).

For now, we’re in a cycle of board games, books and baking. 🤞🏼spring comes fast after January like it usually does because this woman is ready for spring!!!

Just before the snowstorm hit ❄️
It’s officially Cozy Season and time for more things like making herbal oils 🍾

This year, I’m trying to make a lot more of our own herbal essentials and including it as part of homeschooling. My kids love science experiments + magic so it fits right in ✨

Here we go into Autumn 🍂 Isn’t it so interesting how the weather shifts creatures, people included. This week I spent a bit of time harvesting some of the last plants and roots and...I also went to to get me some yarn for crafting all winter long!!! It’s also back to studying Herbalism and Homeschooling letting those roots grow down deep ✨

Some stories are easier not to tell. When there’s so much pain and trauma, the easy thing to do is look away and find anything else to think about. I think this is something most people can relate to?

So me and my family want to say a huge thank you to Indigenous Peoples today. Thank you for sharing their experiences. We hear your stories, we’re listening to the deeply painful individual and family and community stories that have gone on for hundreds of years. We’re not looking away.

We see so much strength for surviving and refusing to be silenced. We hear your wisdom when you stand up for what’s right. We’ll continue to keep listening and learning and fighting alongside you for a better world to give to our babies.

Stringing up Marigold garlands ✨

This kid! Whether it’s helping me with the bees or harvesting or relaxing with me in the hammock, he’s right there.
Today he wanted to know how long Aztec people have used Cempasuchil? I told him I don’t know but that sounds like a good rabbit hole. Making time for these questions is one of my favourite parts of homeschooling ✨

I learned a big life lesson at Caddy Lake this summer. I felt super intimated to learn how to drive a boat but I’d been wanting to explore the area for 10 years. And I saw that self doubt holding a lot of people back. Mostly women and their kids.

I found out that to canoe both the tunnels, it would take about 12 hours. To canoe to one of them, it would be about 4 hours 😳 But if I drove a boat, it would take 3 hours.

Yeahhhh, I’m not THAT good of a paddler so there was just one option if I really wanted to check this off my bucket list.

It didn’t take long to learn and it turned out to be pretty easy, but I felt so powerful not letting fear get in the way.

Lately, I’ve been noticing that some people are good with being “confident enough” to get started and believe they’ll learn as they go...and then there’s other people that stop because they don’t have “enough confidence.” I’m trying to push myself more into the first camp of people.

Note to self: remember this for the future.

How do you push past fear to achieve your dreams and goals?

So my space is pretty limited and 99% of my plants have to pass through “the test.”
1) Are they super nutritious and/or medicinal?
And
2) Are they good for pollinators and wildlife?
BONUS: They taste nice
It helps me narrow down the millions of plants I want to grow every winter when I’m planting THE perfect garden...Anyways, Forget Me Nots are an exception. I haven’t come across them in my studies for being super “useful” or a great pollinator flower, but I don’t really care. I grow them to remember some very special people that have passed on. Every year, it’s like they’re saying hello through the little blue flowers and that makes me smile. Nature is such a deep healer 🌻

Now that the honey is all in jars and the bees are being fed their sugar syrup 😅 it’s time to take a breather and smile looking back on the season. It was rough there for a bit without any rain and extracting was a TON of work for a couple weekends! But there’s healthy brood (babies) and my hives are going into the winter very strong ☺️ If you look close, you can spot the queen and some uncapped larvae!

Confession: For my first few years of gardening, I didn’t plant flowers because I thought they were a waste of space 😂 Sooo it’s kind of hilarious how I’m a beekeeper and my herbal flowers have taken over and I don’t grow as many vegetables. I had no idea that I was going to jump into the fun world of herbalism and try to learn about all the edible and medicinal flowers out there! It’s a yearly battle trying to narrow down the varieties I want to grow 🌼🐝 I honestly can’t wait for the seed catalogues to start rolling in!!!

Getting ready for honey 🍯...and winter. The extreme dryness really does effect everything. It’s been good to have my hives in the backyard where I can say hi and see how they’re doing everyday. It’s been an adventure learning to support their powerful matriarchies 🐝 🐝 🐝
