Hunter: Laura Reece
Guide: Darin Guerena
Huge congratulations to Laura on a beautiful late rifle backpack style coues buck! Laura contacted and wanted to do the ultimate challenge - a guide only backpack style late rifle coues deer hunt in the rugged backcountry of southern Arizona. She’d be responsible for packing all of her gear, food and water. This is no easy task! Darin Guerena was the perfect fit as her guide as he backpacks everywhere! After going through all of her gear, her pack weighed in at 55 pounds!!! Laura and Darin packed in over 3 miles and set up spike camp. Early in the hunt they glassed up this buck rutting a doe and chasing other bucks off. After Laura watched him for a bit, she knew this was the buck for her. After some great shooting behind Darin’s 28 nosler, they had an extremely difficult pack out but arrived safely back at spike camp after dark. The next morning, they broke down camp and packed everything out in one trip. Congratulations Laura on a fantastic deer and being willing to push your limits! You did awesome and should be very proud of yourself.

Here’s an awesome hunt write up from Sierra:
“My dad hiked my ass off!!! He’s a guide and he says I need to push and learn how to hunt like him.”
It all started the night prior when Wiler spotted this bull and morning plans were set. My Dad and I hiked into this area the next morning with Johnny and Wiler on the ridge glassing for us. As we got into position, we saw the bull and cows spook by something and they traveled up and over the other side of the mountain.
Dad and I, along with my dog Emery, who doesn’t leave my side and is amazing in the woods, hiked a couple miles up the ridge where we last saw the elk. It was super thick but Dad was able to find a bedded cow under a tree. After glassing for awhile, he whispered that he could see some antlers through some brush. We couldn’t confirm it was our target bull but figured it was him. We sat on the ridge glassing the rest of the day. I may have taken a nap lol.
Later in the evening we could see movement and parts of antlers and he finally gave us just enough of an opening through the trees to squeeze in a shot. The shot felt good. We could still see him so I got another round in him. The light was fading fast and we knew he was hit hard but it was super thick. We made the decision to give him time overnight and return the next morning. Exhausted from the hike, morning came quickly! We went where we last saw him found him right away. I was so excited!
Hunter: Travis T.
