Did you know that we now offer laparoscopic (keyhole) spays? 🐾

Here's a review from one of our lovely clients 🥰 -

"I have been a customer for around 40 years and have had several of my bi***es spayed, two of them were older rescues which didn’t cope as well. I found the recovery process quite stressful for both myself and my dogs and the biggest challenge was keeping them settled and ensuring they left the wound alone whilst this healed. We took our 3 year old rescue in this week for a laparoscopic spay, she originally came from Romania and is extremely anxious, energetic and has reactive behaviors. We have been dreading how she would cope with this for months and how we would manage her recovery, what a different experience! When we picked Bonnie up she had two very small wounds and has shown no signs of discomfort, she has generally not bothered with her wounds, the biggest problem we have had is trying to get her to calm down and take it easy for the first few days. She has had one check-up appointment and has dissolving stitches so needs no further appointments. Staff were extremely knowledgeable and professional and explained the benefits and how the surgery would be carried out. I would recommend this surgery to anyone considering having their bitch spayed it is so much kinder on the dog and easier to manage the aftercare."

Happy Work Anniversary Stuart! 🥳

Today is Stuart's (aka the boss) 34 year anniversary with us! 🥳

"I qualified from Glasgow Vet School in 1990, went on holiday and came back to find my Dad had got me a job! I'd seen practice with Dalblair as a student and the then senior partner contacted Dad (who he knew socially) to ask if I had any employment sorted. The answer was no, and I started the following Monday! Over the years my role has changed frequently- from mixed, mainly farm work, to a combination, ultimately purely small animal, then mainly a managerial role. I've enjoyed all of it, though have to admit that after 22 years of doing on call, on top of full time work, it was a relief to finally have a better solution. I've been very lucky to work with a lot of wonderful people- the current team are amazing and continue to promote the values of the practice that I grew up with. I couldn't imagine working anywhere else (which is lucky because I never will!)."

A huge Happy Anniversary from the whole team and also a huge thank you for all your dedication and hard work. 🐾

Happy Work Anniversary Eilidh 🩺🥰

Eilidh graduated from Edinburgh Vet School in 2021 and joined Dalblair Vets soon after. She enjoys all aspects of being a vet and the variety that comes with it.
Eilidh is a self confessed chatterbox and is usually found distracting the team with a joke or telling a story that is usually met with a “that would only ever happen to you Eilidh”.
Outside of work she is kept busy with her two naughty Jack Russell’s, Spud and Stew, and her well behaved husband. 😆

In her own words
“I find it a privilege to be entrusted to help you look after your pets to ensure they are the healthiest they can be “

Thanks for all your hard work over the last 3 years Eilidh 🐾

🩺🐱 **How and Why We Measure Your Cat's Blood Pressure🐱🩺**

Just like in humans, monitoring blood pressure is crucial for your cat’s health! Here's why and how we do it:

🐾Why Check Blood Pressure?🐾

1. **Early Detection**: High blood pressure can be a sign of underlying issues like kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, or heart problems.

2. **Prevent Organ Damage**: Consistently high blood pressure can damage vital organs, including the heart, kidneys, eyes, and brain.

3. **Monitor Chronic Conditions**: Cats with chronic diseases need regular blood pressure checks to manage their health effectively.

🐾How Do We Measure It?🐾

1. **Comfort First**: We ensure your cat feels safe and relaxed, as stress can affect blood pressure readings. We would recommend booking blood pressure appointments during our Cat Clinic on Wednesday afternoons in our Prestwick branch.

2. **Tiny Cuff**: Using a small, feline-specific cuff, we gently place it on your cat's leg or tail.

3. **Quick and Painless**: The procedure is swift and non-invasive, causing minimal discomfort to your pet.

4. **Advanced Tools**: Our equipment provides accurate readings to help us monitor and manage your cat’s health effectively.

‼ Pet Blood Bank UK session Sunday 14th July at Dalblair Vets Ayr ‼

Did you know that there is a blood bank for pets? 🐾

is a charity that helps to save the lives of pets in need. It’s just like the human blood service, but for dogs!

They run donation sessions across the country where owners bring their much loved dogs to give blood.

Here’s a lovely review from one of clients whose beautiful dog Stanley gave blood at the last session. 🐾

"All the staff at the session were absolutely fantastic with Stan. I think Stanley actually enjoyed being involved and I would love to bring him along again. Hopefully we'll get Tess to her ideal weight and be able to bring her along too. It's a great thing to be able to do, not just for saving another life but for socialising the pups. You never know when they need to be be seen by a vet themselves and the last thing I want it's any of my dogs being difficult to handle.

So anyone with a big friendly pooch should get involved!! "

Happy Work Anniversary Carol!🥳

Today is Carol's 20 year anniversary with us!

According to Carol’s parents, she announced that she was going to be a vet at the tender age of 5. That seems like yesterday, but after graduating from Edinburgh vet school nearly 30 years ago , she has worked in Staffordshire, Cheshire , Perthshire and Fife , with a spell of working as a locum vet before joining Dalblair 20 years ago.
Carol has a soft spot for the golden oldies and the challenges that geriatric patients bring. She also has recently been involved in launching our new cat clinic in our Prestwick surgery on Wednesday afternoons .
Outside of work , Carol is always busy! Her husband is also a vet ( of a very different kind ) and she has two daughters and a selection of animals to tend to .She is also involved in various musical groups and bands and has been spotted playing in some local concerts .🎶

Thank you for all your hard work over the last 20 years Carol🥰

Happy Work Anniversary Carola! 🥳🐾

Today is Carola's 1 year anniversary with us! 🥳

"I got into nursing 22 years ago, qualified 20 years ago. In that time I have worked at several companies including an orthopaedic specialist and a veterinary hospital down in England where I was for 14 years before moving back to Scotland. My favourite parts of the job are nurse clinics and looking after the hospitalised patients, but my passion is in animal rehabilitation and I hope to get this started again at Dalblair Vets."

Thank you for all your hard work over the last year Carola, we really appreciate it! 🥰

🐄 We would love your help! 🐄

Our vet, Kate, has three calves on her farm that she and her family will be hand-rearing due to their mums not being able to produce milk. ❤

Kate is a bit stuck for names for these lovely calves, and we thought you might be able to help her out!

Calves 3059 and 3070 are male, and 3042 is female.

We have some news...

Our receptionist, Jean, who has worked here for 24 years has retired. ❤

Although we are so happy for Jean we are all going to miss her lots and work isn't quite the same without her! 🐾❤

There is so much we could say about Jean and so many lovely memories over the years but we feel this poem that we wrote for her sums it all up pretty well. ❤

All the best in your retirement Jean from the whole team. ❤

"Fiddlesticks"

There once was a legend called Jean,
A fave of the whole DV team,
Reception at Ayr,
Just won't feel like Dalblair,
Once she starts living the retirement dream.

Now as you bid farewell the saddest time has come,
To leave behind the hustle and the daily hum,
No more ringing phones or giant queues to tend,
Your journey into retirement is about to ascend.

"Oh Jean Bean"
When faced with adversity, trouble or woe,
There's always that one person, to where you know to go,
The phrase that makes vets sigh happily:
Its always Jean, "leave it with me".

In Dalblair's reception you always held the floor,
For 24 years and maybe a little more,
Always polite, with no show of vanity,
And no matter the hardship never a profanity!

Oh how you love your garden, as you sit and contemplate,
That working here for all this time was brought to you by fate.

It has been such a life long privilege for us to work alongside you.
We'll really really miss you, and we won't know what to do! ❤

Today is Angela's 4 year anniversary with us! 🥳

Angela graduated from Glasgow Vet School in 2003, she worked at a vet hospital for 10 years before coming to Ayrshire. In Angela’s own words, “I love working at this practice with its dedicated and caring staff, where we all work to a high standard. I enjoy both surgery and medicine but have a special interest in pain management and anaesthesia. 22/05/2024

🐾 May is Arthritis Awareness Month 🐾

🐾 WHAT IS ARTHRITIS? 🐾

Arthritis simply means 'inflammation of the joints' and is a common problem for many of our pets.

Inside the animal's joints, bone surfaces are normally covered with a thin layer of very smooth cartilage, lubricated with a small amount of joint fluid that allows the two surfaces to glide freely over one another with minimum friction. In animals with arthritis, cartilage within the joint undergoes change or damage, becoming less smooth and resulting in the bone surfaces rubbing together. This causes discomfort to your pet, as well as future damage to cartilage. As a direct result of this increased friction, new bone starts to form around the joint making the joint stiffer and rougher, which limits its movement even more – a condition known as degenerative joint disease.

🐾 CAUSES 🐾

- Wear and tear with age.
- Joint damage due to developmental problems and
growth defects (e.g. hip and elbow dysplasia)
- Traumatic damage to a joint or growth plate.
(Including surgery)
- Musculoskeletal injuries
- Previous infection within a joint

🐾 SYMPTOMS 🐾

Pets may become lame with severe osteoarthritis, but signs can be more subtle in some pets, such as difficulty getting up, reluctance to climb stairs or jump, behaviour changes (less tolerable/grumpy),sleeping more, slowing down and becoming less energetic.

These signs are often being confused with a pet just 'getting old.'

As the disease nearly always causes pain and stiffness, dogs may not be as keen to exercise as they would have done in the past. And cats often do not jump on higher places and often have a change (reduction) in grooming behaviour. They may show lameness or obvious stiffness (especially after long periods of rest). Commonly this stiffness improves with commencement of exercise. Some dogs may even lick continuously at an underlying painful joint – occasionally causing unwanted patches of saliva staining. Some animals will show obvious signs of pain, whereas others may just become slower or grumpier.

Symptoms are often more severe in affected pets in colder, damper conditions. Sometimes it is not until we trial treatment for chronic pain that we appreciate how severely a pet is affected.

🐾 TREATMENT 🐾

Treatment falls into several categories, which should all be used together to maximise effectiveness.
- Identification and education
- Weight management
- Change in home environment
- Modified/controlled exercise
- Neutraceuticals
- Complimentary therapies
- Medication
- Further veterinary intervention (surgery)
