Did you see the rip off Britain article on Monday ?
It was about a professional dog walker who was supposed to be looking after a couple of dogs whose owner was busy at work. The walker was recommended to them by friends so they trusted her. They noticed one of their dogs was beginning to change, hiding upstairs and crying when the walker came but didn’t think it could possibly be anything to do with the walker.
The walker didn't know the owner had installed a camera at home, and when the owner checked the recording one day it turned out the dog walker was shouting, shaking hitting and generally abusing the dogs. The owners were absolutely devastated and rightly so confronted her got no apology and took her to court and won but on appeal got her sentence reduced.
This is Disgusting !!! But this is not an isolated case.
What I can't understand is why people who obviously don't like dogs, choose to work with them. Worse yet, they choose to set up a business whose main service is to help people with their dogs!
I seriously can't get my head around it.
This means it’s bad news for both dog walkers and the dogs, as people are going to think twice about hiring dog walkers.
This means less dogs get walked, which leads to a build up of energy, which leads to frustration, chewing, destruction, howling etc, which may lead to a dog being given up, all because dog owners, quite rightly if they saw that article) don't feel like they can trust anyone to help them walk their dog.
So, how can you make sure your dog walker is a responsible, force free, dog loving individual or company.
Unfortunately at the moment is unregulated and me as a pet professional would love to see regulation come into place for the walking as well as the home boarding section. We have to be careful though as what happens is what I’ve seen happen in the home boarding sector is more people just undercut and just continue unlicensed 😢
The cheapest is not always the best, you only get what you pay for.
Points to help you make your choice
🐶 Always meet the dog walker
🐶Check them out
🐶watch how your dog interacts with them
🐶check reviews on Facebook, google, website
🐶Do they offer Home boarding and if so are they licensed ( legal requirement) and what star rating are they.
🐶Are they DBS checked
🐶Are they insured
🐶Are they canine first aiders
🐶Have they done any courses
🐶how are they transporting your dog .. safe cages with air con facilities
🐶Do they carry water, spare leads, first aid kits in the vehicles
🐶ask people how they handle the dogs
🐶ask them not to put any behavioural training in with your dog unless you’ve approved it ( there’s so many different methods of training of which some can be scary or painful to your dog )
A really good way is to watch a dog walker out with a bunch of dogs on how they react and play with the dogs and then ask them for their details if you that’s how you would like your dog to be interacted with.
We are not all the same and there’s some wonderful caring dog walkers out there.
Listen to your dog .. they can’t talk but they can show their fears.
