Meet Luca and Neo, Luca came for his first ever bath today and finished off under the solarium, I think he liked it! Neo is an ex racer who came for an assessment and treatment for maintenance of mild KS with We found him to be a bit stiff in his hocks (pretty standard for OTTB’s) so he had the full works with Izzy and the Indiba! He also enjoyed himself…💤💤💤

For part or full loan. Happy for her to move yards but must be a reasonable distance from Beverley. Bee (Money Honey) is a 5yo OTTB. She is basically a superstar, I’m just too fat to ride her myself 😂 She is bombproof in traffic, takes everything new in her stride so far. She’s a sweetheart to do anything with, she has no vices. She’s 15.3hh and with a weight limit of 10st. She has some pathology which is managed by me and at her current workload (light hacking and starting a bit of ridden schooling) it hasn’t caused her any issues, but she will remain under my care for once monthly physio treatment. She is not to be jumped. I’ve just had her shod in front. She needs a capable rider who can school her properly and keep her musculature in tip top condition. Message for more info.

BUTTERCUPS 🌼

Whilst buttercups are very pretty and yellow fields look lovely as you drive through the countryside, they are a horse owner's major annoyance!!

Buttercups are a w**d, and thrive in over-grazed pastures. The leaves and stems contain something called proteoanemonin, a toxic oil. Fortunately, horses generally have no interest in eating them as they are very bitter, and are very clever at eating around them. However, once the paddock becomes overgrazed, buttercups thrive and spread, and before you know it, the entire paddock is buttercups. Horses will only tend to eat them if the paddock is overgrazed and there is nothing else to eat.

Clinical signs associated with eating them include:
Blisters on lips (common)
Face swelling
Drooling/excessive salivation
Mild colic (very rare)
Diarrhoea (very rare)

What should you do if your paddock is overrun with buttercups?

Overgrazing is the main problem so move your horse to new paddocks before this happens. Seed your paddocks, particularly the bare spots, with varieties of grass that thrive well in your area. Buttercup seeds germinate in the Autumn so maintaining your paddocks well during the summer and preventing overgrazing will help prevent the problem the following season - although with hot weather and no rain, this can be difficult. Spraying fields in early Spring before buttercups bloom can be helpful, but ensure horses are not on the paddock during and after treatment. Contact your local farmer to maintain your paddocks and minimise buttercups overwhelming the paddocks. Proper pasture management involves rotational grazing, fertilisation and reseeding to keep your paddocks healthy and your horse healthy!

In the meantime, move your horse to fresh pasture or provide supplementary hay in the field, to ensure they do not need to eat it, for lack of anything else to eat.

Looking at running some horse & rider clinics now the weather is (sort of) perking up! We will definitely be running the long reining masterclass again as that was fantastic last time. What things do people want? I was planning on an equine massage for horse owners again (which can be at our yard on our horses or at yours with your own). We’ve done bit and bridle fit before, I quite fancy a classical in-hand clinic, fab for rehab and young horses especially. Open to ideas!

Do you know your horse’s vital signs? 🩺🌡

If your horse’s vital signs are not within the normal range, you should call your vet for advice. These simple checks will help you assess if your horse is healthy or if something may be wrong.

**THURSDAY RESEARCH MEME**

Todays research meme features some of our rider based research. In this study we looked at a group of riders, all of which were right handed. Despite the perception of sitting equally, there was increased weight on the left seat bone. How does this translate to when riding (paper on the way)? Whilst we may have a perception of sitting equally, maybe we have a preference to weight one side more than the other. This reinforces the importance of working with riders “off-horse” to improve their proprioception, awareness and symmetry…. which can then be transferred to when riding. 🤓

Another excellent post from Pony Club Australia 🙌🏼

Remember to release after every aid. Releasing aids as soon as the horse gives the desired response is extremely important.

First, the release tells the horse that he did what you wanted. This removal of pressure is what scientists call 'negative reinforcement', because pressure has been removed. It makes the horse more likely to respond next time you give an aid.

Second, the release gives the horse a chance to develop self-carriage (when he maintains tempo, speed and line). This has the added benefit of giving riders the chance to return to their own neutral position (eg, 'quiet' legs and hands).

Third, the release makes it easier for the horse to tell the difference between one aid and another. This improves rider communication and reduces horse confusion.

Note: This particular Training Tuesday tip is about releasing after every aid, which is called 'negative reinforcement'. From the earliest rider Certificate, Pony Club Australia encourages 'positive reinforcement', which involves adding something that a horse finds pleasurable, like a scratch or a food reward.
