We've seen some particularly nasty outbreaks of New Forest Eye in the last few weeks. It's caused by a bacterial infection and spread by flies, so fly prevention treatments and isolating affected animals can reduce spread in the group.

Keep a lookout for runny or closed eyes - prompt treatment is important as eye damage can develop very quickly.

Laura would like to say a big "thank you" again to the clients who allowed their farm data/pictures to be used in her assessments.

It might (finally) feel like summer but for many sheep flocks, it's almost time to think ahead to tupping! Summer is a good time to vaccinate against Enzootic Abortion & Toxoplasmosis, as this must be done well in advance of tupping; and if you need new teaser rams, vasectomies must be done at least 6 weeks ahead of use too.

Haemonchus alert... although there had been suspicions, we have now confirmed our first cases of Haemonchus (barberpole worm) of the year. Traditionally seen in mid/late Summer, we now see this condition from May to November depending on weather conditions. Haemonchus worms cause anaemia resulting in weakness and deaths - give us a call if you have any concerns.

During Mental Health Awareness Week last week, some of the farm & equine team got together for a dog walk and catch-up.

Over the recent long, wet winter/Spring (and a challenging calving & lambing for many), we've felt privileged that farmers have turned to us for advice in difficult times. We are always happy to listen, and to help wherever we can, including helping clients connect with the fantastic support organisations available.

Matt has been busy fertility testing bulls in recent weeks, in preparation for the upcoming breeding season. For new and older bulls alike, this is a very useful exercise to give the best chance of a successful breeding season, rather than discovering any problems at a disastrous PD session months later! Give the office a call to book in.

Have moo heard... about the Johnes tools available on HerdCompanion? They are really helpful to identify your higher-risk animals, make individual cow decisions and monitor overall herd progress. We are always happy to advise on these too.

Calf scour appears more of a problem than normal with this prolonged wet winter, leading to wet environments where the common bugs that cause scour can thrive. E.coli in young calves less than a week old can be very severe, quickly leading to sepsis, whilst other causes such as rotavirus & crypto tend to occur later.

Give us a call if you have any concerns - we can run quick 10-minute tests to tailor your treatment plans, and don't forget rehydration is key.

The office will be closed for Easter bank holidays this coming Friday & Monday; however we are open for medicines collections on Saturday. Please place any urgent vaccine or large medicines orders ASAP as we won't receive deliveries over the bank holiday.

Laura & Matt are on-call over the long weekend (and are hoping for some nice Easter lambings!)

21/03/2024

Spring is keeping us busy with calvings, lambings and all the associated problems! Can anyone guess the breed of this lovely pair?
