Meet Oscar the Cockerpoo🧡 He attended all of his puppy parties and got his certificate, which he looks very happy with!

Oscar was a bit nervous at his first puppy party, he wasn't sure if he wanted to play with the other pups or watch them play. On his second party, his confidence had grown and he enjoyed running and playing with the others!

After his last Puppy Party his owners said 'Oscar was very proud of himself to🐾night. Safe to say he loved his 2 sessions! Totally different puppy on week 2! It's amazing the confidence built in a week!'

We are so happy with the progress Oscar has made and we hope he continues to gain his confidence as he grows up!

Things Your Cat Wishes You Knew!

Our cats are perfect in every way, of course, but they are definitely particular in how they like their world to be!

So here are some of the things I think they wished you knew!

🐱 They love hiding!

Our cats are predators but they are also prey, so they prefer to rest in places where they feel safe.

This is why they love boxes so much, the sides keep them hidden! It is also why raised beds on radiators and cat trees, and covered beds are so great.

🐱 They hate sharing!

Cats can be social but they are very selective about this. They don’t need the companionship of other cats to be happy and they definitely don’t like sharing!

Feral cats will live in related colonies, but each cat is responsible for their own hunting and for themselves.

Which means coming together for meals is not something they usually enjoy and can find stressful. If you have more than one cat, even if they seem to get on, you need at least one feeding station each, spread apart so they don’t feel pressured at mealtimes.

These sharing rules also apply to things like litter trays, water bowls and beds!

🐱 They do like water - but it has to be perfect!

Cats have a reputation for not being big drinkers, and while this is true to an extent - they are descended from desert animals so have a naturally low thirst - they are also very particular about how they want it!

In the wild if they catch prey near water, that water can be contaminated with waste, so they are hard wired to avoid drinking close to where they eat. Which is why water bowls near food are often ignored and why many favour moving water like fountains or taps.

They also prefer wide, flat water so their whiskers stay dry and they can see around them while they drink – again because being prey ,they like to keep an eye on their surroundings.

🐱 They love a big scratching post!

Cats scratch to mark their territory, exercise and look after their nails.

They love to stretch to their full height and put all their body weight into it. So the little posts in most pet shops don’t cut it, which is why they are ignored.

To help them leave your carpet or sofa alone you need a tall, solid scratching post, or one on the floor or attached to the wall!

🐱 They don’t like change

Again, because of their independent nature, cats are naturally suspicious of anything new and prefer consistency.

This is why they can be ‘fussy’ with their food. It’s not that they don’t like it, it’s just that it’s new! So offering it regularly alongside their current diet will help them get used to it.

And also why some cats get stressed when you go away or move things around.

🐱 They like little meals often

In the wild cats spend a great deal of time hunting and catch several small prey a day.

This means they are ‘little and often’ eaters. So when you put their food down and they only take a couple of mouthfuls, it isn’t that they don’t like it, they only wanted that much right now.

Leaving a bowl of kibble available is fine as long as they don’t gorge (some cats with disordered eating will) but what is better is mimicking that natural behaviour by using treat balls and puzzle bowls.

What things does your cat do that seems odd to you but probably makes sense to them?!

Have you heard of leptospirosis? 😧

Leptospirosis, often shortened to lepto, is a disease caused by bacteria that damage vital organs, such as the liver and kidneys. It’s very serious and often fatal in dogs.

Dogs can catch leptospirosis from:

- Another infected dog
- Sniffing/licking the ground where an infected dog has urinated
- Urine from an infected cow, pig or rodent
- Infected wet ground or fresh water - lepto can live in wet ground and fresh water for several months

Leptospirosis can also be spread to other dogs by infected dogs, mice, rats and cows but can also be caught from infected water. So, if your dog lives on a farm, kills rodents or spends a lot of time swimming, they’re at a much higher risk of catching it ⚠️

There are a few different types of leptospirosis bacteria and each one is slightly different. Fortunately, we can vaccinate against the types of lepto bacteria commonly found in the UK. Find out more: http://pdsa.me/rwlP

Please welcome our new receptionist - Sybil the Labrador pup. ✨

Please bear with her while she gets used to her new job! 🖤

However, please keep in mind that she cannot pick up the phones, cannot take payments, cannot send emails or answer any questions! 😂

She can, however, give cuddles and licks if needed though!! 💕

Sybil is the newest member of Charlotte (one of our farm vets) family! She is certainly a cutie and we are loving having her around the practice! What a good girl! 🖤🐕‍🦺

✨ Is your pet up to date with flea treatments? ✨

An alarming 95% of fleas live in the environment! Meaning our homes!

We have had an increase in reports of fleas on clients pets and also owners reporting having more flea infestations in their homes. 🏠

Fleas are more common during summer, but this year seem to be even more prevalent, most likely due to the recent weather!

It is also good to keep in mind that ticks are also more common around this time.

Fleas and ticks can cause issues. Fleas also can carry other parasites such as tapeworms. These can then be transmitted to you and your pets!

Please contact us on 01258 452626 to order flea treatments or to check when yours is due.

Meet Freddie! 🐕 He is a Clumber Spaniel pup who attended a set of our puppy parties that are run by RVN's Chloe and Carly 🐾

Freddie's owners said he is doing really well and that he would have this to say about his time at the puppy parties:

'I made new friends and learnt how to have fun and still be safe, best time ever and I sleep so well after my puppy parties' 💕

You can see from the photo that Freddie is very proud of his certificate, and we are very proud of him for doing so well at socialising! 💚

⚠️🐾🩷Stressor Stacking in cats🩷🐾⚠️

Are you aware of stressor stacking?

This is where a series of events build up and cause your cat to feel uncomfortable or stressed. Each stimulus adds a little more stress to your cat and this mounts up, eventually causing your cat to feel very stressed and uncomfortable, causing them to act out.

This is why a trip to the vet can be extremely stressful, due to the build up of stressful events before hand all the way up to the consultation itself!

Being aware of this is useful as it means you can try to help combat the fear with things such as using pheromone sprays to help reduce anxiety. 🩷🐾

Our Story

There has been a veterinary surgery at Damory Lodge for over 80 years. In the early 1900’s the veterinary emphasis was on the treatment of horses and farm animals. Indeed an early principal of the practice was Sir Frederick Beckett, a notable master of the Portman Hunt, who retired in 1947. As pet ownership increased, particularly during the latter part of the 20th Century, the practice developed its hospital facilities for the care of small animals. In 2002 Damory Veterinary Clinic formed three specialised teams to provide optimum care for small animals, horses and farm livestock respectively. Our three dedicated veterinary teams provide experienced care for small animals (pets), horses and farm animals. Each is supported by our veterinary nursing and support staff so that if your animal requires routine care or emergency treatment we have experience and expertise in each of our veterinary departments. Our team approach to the veterinary care of our patients is aimed at providing our clients with continuity of care and continued professional knowledge directly related to your animal’s needs. The hospital is permanently staffed and trained veterinary personnel are always available to take your call and advise you, day or night.
