Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary

Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary Nestled on a hillside overlooking the beautiful Irwell valley Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary is a charity So where did it all begin? This was all we could afford.

Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary is one of the largest of its kind in the North West of England. It now boasts a 55 acre site in Edenfield near Ramsbottom, Lancashire and is uniquely positioned to cover a wide geographical area stretching across Lancashire to the Pennines and down in to Greater Manchester. Bleakholt is under constant development so as to be able to provide the very best possible care fo

r over 450 animals currently with us. As with many such charities it gradually evolved. It was started by a very kind lady, Olive Lomas, who saved a lucky donkey named Maudie from slaughter. Her hard work and commitment continued thereby saving many horses. In 1957, the project moved on to Bleakholt Farm in the Pennine foothills above Ramsbottom. In the 60’s and 70’s our cats and dogs were housed in leaky wooden buildings. Our horses had old railway carriages for shelter. The site and work of the Sanctuary has steadily expanded and improved since then. Additions included a block of heated catteries and heated kennels. We now have purpose built stables and 1999 saw the opening of a cat and kitten building. We now have a dog hospital, where we are able to provide minor treatments and an appropriate environment for those of our dogs who are under the weather. Our Waddington kennel block was re-built in 2005, and 2006 saw the re-building of another block named Keller block. Both of these blocks have all the latest “mod cons” including underfloor heating and sliding hatches. Improvements are needed all the time. We have completed a much needed new toilet block in 2007 and an extra cat building was completed in 2008 allowing all our felines to be housed in one area. In the future we hope to be able to build a new dog kennel block to include new facilities such as a home environment simulation room to aid in training exercises. In 1969 Bleakholt became a registered charity. Our first president was Margaret, Duchess of Argyll. Our latest president, appointed in 2003, is Ted Robbins who you will know from TV (including “Phoenix Nights”) and radio. Currently he has a programme on Radio Lancashire. He has been a visitor to Bleakholt with his family on a number of occasions in the past so we were pleased he accepted our invitation to be our president. He regularly promotes the good work of the Sanctuary, for which we are very grateful, as well as joining us on Open Days when his busy schedule allows. Thanks Ted! In January 2006, acting upon the advice of the Charities Commission, Bleakholt changed its status to a limited company. The overall planning and management of Bleakholt falls to our Board of Directors (Trustees) who hold monthly meetings. These Directors are members elected at our Annual General Meeting. The day to day tasks of running the Sanctuary and caring for our charges is carried out by our dedicated staff. They are backed up by our army of supporters and volunteers who provide their time and help in so many ways and without whom the Sanctuary could not continue. We are extremely grateful for all the hard work they do. It is very rewarding. Please help us in providing this worthwhile service. Bleakholt hopes this site will give you an insight in to the Sanctuary and its aims. We also hope it introduces you to a few new friends both of the two-legged and four-legged variety.

If you're looking to bond your bunnies, here are some tips to help you out💚🐰:

1. Make sure your rabbits' living spaces are close to each other, with plenty of hiding spots for privacy.

2. Help them get used to each other's scents by swapping some hay or a towel with their scent.

3. When they're ready, let them hang out together for short periods in a neutral area.

Keep an eye on them, and don't worry if they chase or nip a little. If things get too intense, separate them and try again later.

4. Keep letting them spend time together gradually, and introduce toys as they get more comfortable. More helpful tips and information can be found over at https://rabbitawarenessactiongroup.co.uk/rabbit-welfare/companionship/ 💚 🐰

Adorable 2 month old sisters Apple (left) and Annabel need a forever home together. 🐰 Mum was abandoned in a car park and had her babies a few weeks later. Both girls are fit and well and have gentle natures – and beautiful markings! They are always next to each other and rest side by side. 🥰

They will need secure housing as they are still small so could be prey to cats/birds, so indoors would be best initially. An experienced owner would be best and the more time spent with them at this age will accustom them to human contact.

Vouchers will be provided for free neutering when they are old enough. If you would like to meet them, please email: [email protected] For more info, advice on housing rabbits and to apply online, go to: https://www.bleakholt.org/b/F9

This is French Bulldog Frog who was found as a stray.

The two-year-old came in last night with horrendous ears and will now need an operation - a total ear canal ablation.

The poor girl must have been in so much discomfort for so long to get to this stage.

She is safe now and we will start treatment to help this lovely girl live a happy and full life.

We are looking for raffle and tombola prizes if anyone has anything that might be suitable or perhaps a bottle of alcohol they don't want. We would be most grateful, kitten pic purely for cuteness!

😢 Gizmo & Minnie have been with us since February and we don’t understand why they haven’t got a home!

They are both 12 with Gizmo a boy and Minnie a girl.

Their owner passed away which is why they are with us.

They adore each other, walking side by side and head butting each other all the time!

They need to stay together and a dog and feline-free home.

We have a special appeal for this adorable elderly lady Lucky Ducky.

Lucky Ducky was an unwell stray before a kind lady took her in and cared for her.

After getting Lucky back to good condition, sadly the lady could no longer keep her so she came to us for rehoming.

Lucky, who is 14, is a sweet-natured cat and craves kisses and cuddles all day long.

She is hard of hearing and doesn’t have the best sight, so we are rehoming her as a house cat.

You may notice that her fur looks a little dirty, we have attempted to give Lucky a bath on more than one occasion since she joined us, but unfortunately we just can’t seem to get her looking clean again!

Her stained fur is saliva staining, she dribbles as she has no teeth to keep her saliva in her mouth, but don't let that put you off this lovely lady. It makes her extra special.

Lucky is on daily medication due to her hyperthyroid condition, the condition is controlled but she will need blood tests every three months to ensure the dosage of her medication is correct.

Lucky is fine to be rehomed with other cats, and with children over the age of 6, but no dogs as we are unsure on her reaction to them at this point.

We would love Lucky Ducky to find a retirement home.

🥁 OUR 2025 CALENDAR COMPETITION WINNERS ARE....

Before we announce the three winners, we just want to say this was extremely difficult to judge as every photo was sooooo adorable.

The three our judges selected were (in no particular order);

Marley (bubbles)
Rafa
Crumpet (for December)

However we will be using other photographs for Bleakholt promotional material as every photo was amazing. It's lovely to see all our former residents settled so happily in their new homes! 💙
