From 1st September 2023 the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS regulatory body for the veterinary profession in the U.K.) is introducing new guidance on prescribing prescription only medicines.
The full guidance can be found on https://www.rcvs.org.uk/setting-standards/advice-and-guidance/under-care-new-guidance/
(‘Under care’ – new guidance Key changes 3 and 4)
The new guidance requires that a physical examination of the pet must be performed every time any antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals or antiparasitics are prescribed.
This includes topical preparations such as ear and eye drops and all prescription flea/ worm/ tick products.
The guidance is an important step towards ensuring responsible antimicrobial use and reducing the veterinary impact on the wider issues of global antibiotic resistance and decline of insect population.
What this means in practice is that your pet will need to come in for an in- person consultation every time that : -
- We need to prescribe medication for an ear infection ( most contain antibiotics)
- We need to prescribe antibiotics for any skin problem even if it is a chronic problem.
- We/you decide to change from one flea/worm/tick product to another.
- We suspect a urinary tract infection (remote/online consults and faecal analysis culture are no longer sufficient)
We also can no longer prescribe prescription deworming products based on a laboratory report done, we will need to see the pet for a consultation and physical examination first.
For long term prescription medication that is not an antimicrobial/ antiparasitic, our usual of requiring am examination every 6 months (or every 3 months in some less stable or more serious cases) continues to apply.
The consultations are charged at our usual fee depending on whether it is an initial consultation or one for a recurring problem.
If you have any questions or concerns about the new guidance please contact RCVS on
020 7202 0789 or [email protected]

With summer coming up, it's great to be able to enjoy the sun, but we need to be aware of the risks to our pets from the heat.

What is heat stroke?
-It's a potentially life-threatening condition which affects any animal that gets too hot.
-It requires monitoring and treatment from a vet.

visit https://www.pdsa.org.uk/pet-help-and-advice/pet-health-hub/other-veterinary-advice/first-aid-for-heatstroke to find out more about this condition, and contact your vet immediately if you think your pet might be suffering from heatstroke.

What do you know about fleas?

-These clever parasites have a life cycle of several stages.
-The time from egg to adult flea takes around 3-4 weeks.
-Flea pupae can even be dormant for several months!

That's why it's important to stay vigilant by regularly treating your pet.

A product like Bravecto will last around 12 weeks with one simple tablet or spot-on application.

Ask our team about ordering your pet's flea prevention medication.

Keeping your Pet Cool!

Now that the weather's warming up, here are 5 tips from the PDSA to help keep your pets cool:

1 - Water: Make sure your pet always has access to clean, fresh, cool water. Keep it in a shaded area where it won't warm up in the sun.

2 - Shade: Make sure your garden has a shaded area so your pet can avoid the sun. If there's no natural shade you can make some with a tent, gazebo or even a sheet.

3 - Keep their beds cool and shaded on warm days.

4 - Avoid the heat: Don't walk your pets (especially dogs) in hot weather, especially between 12pm-3pm. Don't exercise them; just walks are best. Check the temperature of the pavement before going out - if it's too hot for you to touch, it's too hot for your dog's paws! *

5 - Keep up with grooming: brushing regularly gets rid of dead hairs stuck in your pet's coat, making them feel a little lighter.

*Take extra care with brachycephalic (flat faced) breeds such as pugs and bulldogs. Allow them short walks only if they're up for it.

Now reunited with owner thanks to the power of social media!

A big thank you to all of you who shared.

Stray cat found in Tesco carpark Carnforth , having travelled under a car bonnet from Lancaster earlier today.

Neutered Male, not chipped, very friendly but slightly shaken.

He was brought in by a kindly lady who wasn’t able to get details from the car driver; so unfortunately we have no idea whereabouts in Lancaster he came from.

As well as the markings evident in the pictures he has a black tail. Does anybody recognise him, or know who he belongs to?

Please contact the surgery on 01524 735249 or leave a message on here and we will respond in due course.

15/09/2022

Due to the passing of Her Majesty the Queen, the practice will be closed on Monday 19th September as a mark of respect.

In an emergency, please call the normal practice number (01524 735249) and there will be instructions on who to contact from there.

Thank you for your understanding,

Here at A P Lee Ltd, safety of our staff and clients is our priority.

We have reviewed our current COVID-19 safety procedures and will be making some changes. We will still be operating in a restricted capacity, and the new rules will be as follows:

• Clients and visitors to the surgery will still be required to knock and wait outside at the front door.

• We will allow 2 clients in the waiting room at one time, but we request that masks be worn when in the building. You will be invited into the waiting area by a member of the team; please continue to wait outside until then.

• On a case-by-case basis, clients may be permitted in a consult room with their pet. This is at the discretion of the vet and only under certain circumstances. Again, masks will be required for the safety of our team.

• If you are unwell, especially if you have any symptoms of COVID-19, please do not attend the surgery. Please call us to rearrange your appointment or, if collecting medication, send someone on your behalf.

• Please attend the surgery alone if possible. As access to the waiting room is restricted to 2 clients at a time, other members of your group will be asked to wait outside.

• Social distancing remains a priority; we want our clients and staff to continue to feel COVID safe on our premises.

Thank you for your continued support and co-operation.
