When I'm working with dogs with separation anxiety, one of the aspects of a dog's life I explore with the humans in the team is that of enrichment: what opportunities does their dog have to be a dog and do dog things. This doesn't mean going to agility, chase a ball or generally engage in a human's perspective of what dogs enjoy. One of the most enriching experiences dogs can have is a slow (yes, slow) walk. This lovely video from the Slow Dog Movement explains why a slow and exploratory walk is one of the best ways to enrich your dog's life and support a calm mind - so important for a dog who suffers anxiety. It's also a great way to observe your dog and learn their body language and communication, one of the most valuable skills you will ever learn. I was privileged to support the making of this film and honoured to share it.

The Slow Dog Movement® C.I.C. is a social enterprise based in the U.K. with three directors in the U.K. and one in Russia. We are a group of dog professionals,…

It’s that time of year again! This was my accumulation of grass seeds after our walk this morning - and I was wearing wellies! Cue a very thorough comb through for Mouse and Fynn with careful check of their ears, paws and between pads! Some ‘debris’ and a couple of ticks combed out, but otherwise clear of grass seeds. Phew! Remember, some of these seeds burrow deep - I’ll be checking my boys every day for the foreseeable. ❤️ Picture of Fynn just because… 🤩

These 3 beautiful boys are currently working on their separation anxiety with the help of their lovely families in Norway. They are all doing great! The power of the technology available today makes this possible - I'm in the UK! Separation anxiety is ideal for remote training, I don't have to be in the same room as a dog to watch them and how they respond to being left alone. It's an advantage not to be there! Most dogs have a form of SA known as isolation distress: if someone, it doesn't really matter who, is home with them, they are fine or have less stress. If I was present, I would see modified behaviour and not the true picture. To observe them while alone is the key to success. Remote training doesn't reduce the quality of training, it enhances it. I keep in touch with the families I am working with on a daily basis and training plans are based on actual data. To find out more and how I can help you and your dog out of the misery of separation anxiety, wherever you are in the world, I'd love to hear from you. Click the button to get in touch. ❤️

A new updated Mission Possible is now available. Outstanding training for separation anxiety for those who cannot afford one-to-one training with a CSAT. We love this from Heal the Dog. Empathy and realistic expectations of our dogs is really important within our relationship with them. Understanding that when they're struggling, this will change their behaviour, standing back and working out why and making adjustments for them is a game changer in our relationships with our canine companions.

We love this from Heal the Dog. Leading with empathy is important in our relationships with our dogs. Setting realistic expectations and understanding that when they are struggling this underpins changes in their behaviour, can be a game changer for our dogs (and us humans). 💕

I posted celebration of the lovely Molly at the beginning of the month, who had, at that time, achieved a 20-minute absence in her recovery from separation anxiety. We were looking forward to celebrating the 30-minute milestone at that point, but WOW! Molly has just achieved a 47 minute absence and could have gone longer! The graph says it all. Go Molly and her mum, Jean! You are awesome! 😎 🌟 ❤️ I love my job!

Sharing from The Urban Herder - I’ve done a lot of learning from Amber Batson and am always eager to share her wisdom. Sleep, a factor often missed in the factors that influence our dogs’ behaviour. Enjoy! 😎

The importance of sleep with Amber Batson!

In this episode we discuss the benefits of your dog having a full days rest, what this should look like and how you can support your dog to get those Z's! 😴😴

One of the many joys of being a CSAT is celebrating successes with my clients and their dogs. This is Molly. She had a fantastic reassessment this week - 20 minutes may not seem much, but when you've watched your dog become distressed when you just approach the door, this is a fantastic milestone for Molly and her mum. We're now working towards that 30-minute mark!

TV TRAINERS
Why are TV executives still so wedded to aversive dog trainers? My theory... the public loves the circus act of dangerous and wild behaviour tamed as if by magic.
Dog Academy tried very hard to make positive, reward based training good TV, and they showcased some of the very best trainers and behaviourists working in the UK. But to the masses, sitting on the floor tossing chunks of chicken at a dog doesn't seem to hold the same appeal as dodging the growls and bites of a confused and terrified dog. A scared dog slowly realising a new person is no threat, and watching their body and face soften is not as dramatic as the 'fierce beast calmed' lying in a state of miserable learned helplessness.
How can we get the Ring Masters and Lion Tamers off TV? Stop watching.
Instead of watching a dog with mobility issues and pain labelled as a 'diva', find Canine Arthritis Management and read an article on home adaptations for elderly dogs. Instead of watching a dog with a fear of his feet being handled walked to exhaustion, then wrestled to the floor, let Chirag Patel show you the bucket game on YouTube.

Happy birthday to me 🎈
Woof woof hooray I'm 3 today 🐾
Didn't think I would be spending my 2nd birthday in rescue let alone my 3rd but it is what is and I will make the most of if it as Auntie Sonia says tomorrow is the time to start maturing 😂🙈
I got some treats and a new ball but best of all some extra one-one time which I love most of all.
Thank you to the lovely people who sent some money for me so I can have some secure field sessions with my friends. We haven't been yet because it's been too hot but will be doing very soon and I can't wait 😁.

The best gift I could ever get is a forever home 🏡, I am a good boy I don't understand why nobody wants to give me a chance, I have my needs but so does most rescue dogs 😓.
Please keep caring and sharing my posts 💞

Horseflies! I was walking the dogs on Thursday morning at 7am - already too hot so took off my light jacket and tied it around my waist. 5 mins later, sharp pain under my arm. Horsefly bites are always nasty, but this one gets the medal for toxin and pain. 🥺
