🌈 Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day
Today, on Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day, we honour the cherished horses, ponies and donkeys who've crossed the rainbow bridge, leaving hoofprints on our hearts forever. As veterinary professionals, we understand the bond between humans and horses runs deep and the loss is profoundly felt. Let's take a moment to reflect on the joy they brought into our lives and the memories that continue to shine brightly.

👁 Complicated eye wounds & the importance of prompt veterinary attention! 👁

Mario, a 12-year-old ISH presented to us having had a possible kick to the head. On presentation his eye was hugely swollen which our made examination hard. Fluorescein dye was applied, which showed ulceration on the surface of the eye, therefore anti-inflammatories and an antibiotic eye ointment were prescribed .

On review the next day, it was noticed there was a wound along the eyelid which needed neatly suturing together. Following further investigation using the ultrasound, a small bone fragment was found from the bony orbit. He was referred to Leahurst Equine Hospital for CT imaging. The CT showed the chip sat in the corner next to the eye, this was determined as not necessary to remove at this stage.

After a long course of antibiotics and close treatment of the corneal ulcer using a sub-palpebral lavage (SPL) system, Mario was feeling much better and back to his usual cheeky self. The SPL system allowed him to receive appropriate and timely topical medication directly to the eye. This ensured quick treatment of the corneal ulcer and prevented deterioration which could have led to a necessary enucleation.

Hopefully he won’t be getting too friendly with his field mates again any time soon!

Thank you to Mario's owners for letting us share his story 😀

Swollen eyes, excessive ocular discharge and squinting of the eye are all key signs that should not be ignored, and often need prompt veterinary attention to prevent deterioration.

Did you know Atypical Myopathy is a risk in the autumn?

Atypical Myopathy poses a significant risk to equines, causing severe muscle dysfunction and potentially fatal consequences, particularly prevalent during autumn. The disorder stems from eating sycamore seeds, seedlings and leaves. When eaten, they release a toxin that slows down the horse’s energy production in the muscle fibres.

Early detection is paramount; be vigilant for signs such as weakness, muscle tremors, dark urine, recumbency/lying down and impaired mobility.

Should you suspect Atypical Myopathy, promptly seek veterinary assistance by contacting us on 01257 483161.

💧 When traveling or competing, carry sufficient water and offer it frequently to prevent dehydration
💧 Monitor your horse's hydration by observing urine colour and frequency, as well as skin elasticity
💧 Consider adding electrolytes to their diet, under veterinary guidance, to replenish lost minerals and encourage water consumption
