Happy fathers day

We all say, “It’ll never happen to my dog”, but can you imagine if one day it did? 😢 Walking dogs in hot weather could be just as deadly to them as being left in a hot car ⚠️

After the UK’s record-breaking summer in 2022, the British Veterinary Association found that while around 1 in 10 (9%) vets in small animal practice had seen at least one dog affected by the heat after being left in a hot car, almost four times as many vets (38%) had seen at least one dog affected by the heat after being walked or exercised in hot weather ☀️🌡️

While the majority of owners would no longer dream of leaving their dogs in a car on a hot day, many people still accidentally put them at serious risk by taking them out for a walk during hot spells. Even a short walk or taking dogs to places such as parks and beaches with little or no shade can be fatal 🥵🚫 Heat-related illnesses in dogs are severe and can lead to organ failure, brain damage, and even death.

Remember, if in doubt, DON’T go out ❗❗ And if you’re looking for alternative ways to exercise your dogs during summer, our vets can help with that: 👉 http://pdsa.me/pa0B

Dogs can’t cool themselves down as easily as we can as they’re unable to sweat like us. Instead, they mainly use panting to keep cool. Coupled with their thick fur (which is like wearing an insulated coat!), this can make them prone to overheating. 🌡️ It’s important to do all we can to keep our furry friends cool, to prevent serious illnesses such as heatstroke 🐶☀️

As the hot weather approaches, make sure you're ahead of the game with our top tips on how to keep your dog cool in summer. See the full guide here: http://pdsa.me/D4PQ

With the warmer weather ahead, owners should be mindful of the signs of heatstroke. 🌡️ Heatstroke is a serious illness that develops when a dog gets too hot and is unable to lower its temperature. Left untreated, heatstroke can lead to seizures, organ failure and even death.

Any dog can develop heatstroke, but overweight, young, elderly, flat-faced, giant-breed, and thick-coated dogs are particularly at risk, even from just sitting out in hot weather.

Some of the most common triggers for heatstroke include:
🥵 Overheating during exercise - accounts for 74% of cases
☀️ Being outside in hot weather (even just sitting still) - accounts for 12.9% of cases
🚘♨️ Being trapped in a hot car - accounts for 5.2% of cases

See advice from our vets on what you can do to help prevent or provide first aid for heatstroke: http://pdsa.me/hpSh

🧊 Please note that ice cubes are perfectly safe for dogs to use as a treat to cool down on a hot day. It is when a dog is suffering from heatstroke that the drastic change in temperature from the ice can cause shock, and therefore should be avoided. A dog’s normal body temperature is around 38.6°C (101.5°F).

You may be able to keep your Easter chocolate hidden away from prying hands, but have you thought about snooping snouts? 🍫🐽

Our doggy pals have a sense of smell at least 40x more powerful than us humans, and our feline friends have some pretty amazing detection skills, too! Never underestimate your pet's determination when they've got their nose set on something that smells tasty 😋

Each year our Pet Hospital teams see chocolate poisoning cases, most of which are from pets sneakily getting their paws on the goods. ⚠️🐾 If you suspect your pet may have eaten chocolate, keep the packaging and call your vet immediately.

Our friends in the animal charity sector are facing a 😔🐰🐰

There are too many rabbits, often the result of accidental breeding, and not enough suitable homes that understand rabbits have specific needs to keep them happy and healthy. As the situation worsens, we're growing increasingly concerned for the welfare of the UK's pet rabbits as they face abandonment and homelessness 💔

Being sociable animals, rabbits need to live with other rabbits, but our 2022 PAW Report found that 42% of the UK's pet rabbits are unneutered; that's a lot of rabbits who could be breeding! Did you know that rabbits can;

⚠️ Get pregnant from only a few weeks old
⚠️ Fall pregnant again as soon as kittens are born, resulting in another litter within weeks
⚠️ Mate with family members

Same-sex or neutered groups are the only way to avoid a bunny boom. When rabbits are young, it can be difficult to know if they're girls or boys, so it's best to check with a vet if you're unsure.

If you're a rabbit owner and you want to know more about sexing and neutering, read our vets' advice: 👉 http://pdsa.me/Goqr

🐶🐾 As Crufts comes to a close for another year, we hope that 2023 will be the last year that The Kennel Club parade French bulldogs, pugs and British bulldogs in front of judges and normalise their exaggerated features.

We were concerned to see the British bulldog ‘Best of Breed’ winner fail a vet check, as well as the French bulldog ‘Best of Breed’ winner who had pinched and narrow nostrils, which makes it harder for air to flow through the nose normally 😔
