Polite notice to say, if you have booked me in for clipping, please make sure your horse(s) are bathed and dried or at least groomed very well the days leading up to and before I arrive.
I have been clipping some quite grubby ponies recently which has had an affect on the longevity of my blades, therefore needing to be sharpened more than usual and putting pressure on my clippers motor.
It is much better for your horse to have a clean coat as the blades don’t snag or over heat, in turn giving an all round better quality finish and comfortable clip.
Thank you 😊

A surcharge of £14 per clip may be added if your horse is dirty to cover the cost of the sharpening of blades.
Thank you for understanding 🧼

Words of Wisdom from liveryman !!!
🧼Bathing prior to clipping is essential for finish, blade longevity and the comfort of your horse 🧼

To wash or not to wash prior to clipping is a topic we see debated every winter, the common theme being not wanting to wash because of the cold, not having a hot wash and solarium set up etc. but also not being prepared for what happens when you clip a dirty coat

❌ Blades may not last an entire clip
❌Blades may over heat and need to be constantly cleared of hair
❌ Machines may over heat due to excess strain

How to prepare the coat for clipping ⬇️

📍Wash your horse using a scrubby brush ensuring to get down to the skin (this is where the blades clip after all)
📍Rinse your horse thoroughly - product left in the coat will also do harm to your blades
📍Allow your horse 24 hours to completely dry and brush through the coat before clipping

❌Avoid coat oils and sprays prior to clipping these clog up your blades and do not make it easier for your clippers and are not used in place of bathing
❌Never clip a wet horse 🤯
❌Just running a hose over the horse is not washing

🚿If you cannot wash for what ever reason grooming can be done in its place in the lead up to clipping. A good groom using a variety of brushes to get through the coat. And hot clothing for a week in the run up to clipping to draw the grease out of the coat. This is not as effective as bathing but will help in a pinch🚿

Also remember you can spot wash ie if you’re only doing a Bib only wash the area you plan on clipping, with a bucket and sponge if necessary. ✅

What do you do before clipping ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Spot the difference 👀❓❔❓

A little summer clip was in order for William as he had been struggling when exercised in the heat and sweating a lot as he had quite a thick summer coat. I find clipping a summer coat can take a bit of precision to get a good finish, as it’s harder to blend all the lines in unless doing a full clip like this one had today. My top tip to get an overall good quality clip would be to make sure you have very good natural light when clipping in the summer especially, as this will show up any missed bits! ✂️

🌟Appreciation Post🌟 Standing alongside me at the trot up for is DJ - one of the most dedicated and long-standing competitions grooms I know. Feeling very privileged to be working here for again after starting out in 2012 as a working pupil. Having never worked with event horses, DJ taught me an incredible amount and has always been there to offer advice and knowledge through my 11 years as a competition groom. Her true passion and commitment to the horses is a real testimony to their performance and general well being and even to this day she always has new bits of advice to teach me which I will always soak up! Here’s to a good and hopefully successful week and I’m loving being back with Team NZL 🇳🇿🏇🏿🤞🏼

We were delighted to welcome Josh Levi of JL Equestrian to Merrist Wood Equine last week.

Josh came to deliver a workshop/demonstration plaiting to our Level 3 Year 1 students undertaking Competition Grooming.

Having had a lot of experience grooming for 5* event riders, Josh brought his wealth of knowledge along with him. He spoke about his career progression and transferable skills needed in the industry and gave the students some great tips and tricks for plaiting with thread and turnout of horses for competitions.

Thanks for sharing your expertise and your time with our grateful students Josh! 🙂🐎

Well that’s the first set of plaits for the season completed!
The first few of the season can be tricky as the mane has become thinner due to their winter rugs and your hands are out of practice 🙈

I’ve always been very traditional with pulling tails, using a comb and my fingers. Just recently I’ve been asked to clip/trim quite a few and I have to say i’m a bit of a convert now! I’ve been using my great Nova trimmers which have different grades and settings making it very easy to get a lovely neat finish. It takes far less time and less labour intensive on your fingers 🤏🏼

📋 Checklists or alarms on your phone? What are your best tips for staying organised?

⏰ Groom's schedules are often very tight, juggling horses and riders to fit in with show days.

✏️ The job is about a lot more than brushing horses, it requires some serious organisational skills to pack, travel and manage your horses at a show.
