As the UK enters a four-day hot weather warning, here’s a guide on when you should and shouldn’t walk your dog in the heat.

Remember, a dog has never died from skipping a walk, but dogs have died from heat stroke.

How is your dog coping with the heat?

**UPDATE - owners has been found, thank you to everyone for their efforts in locating them**

Sadly, we received a report last night of a black, female cat which had been badly injured in the Mennock area, possibly from a road traffic incident. The cat had some hair loss to it's paws and some white hairs under her chin. If you believe this cat to be yours, please give our Dumfries branch a call on 01387253402

✨✨Lastly, and certainly not least....finishing off Vet Nurse Awareness Month we have Steph. Steph has been qualified for almost 8 years and worked at Nithsdale Vets for over 12 years. We asked Steph to share a bit about herself.....

Hobbies: cycling, running and walking the dogs. Hopefully competing at Birmingham hyrox so training will start for that too.

Pets: Toby the Border Terrier, Logan the Labrador and Stella the cat.

Achievements: managed to stay in a camper van for 4 weeks while travelling around New Zealand 😂

Career interests: cardiology, radiology, ultrasound scans and emergency surgery.

Advice for anyone wanting to become a veterinary nurse: Not an easy course! Comes with long and challenging days but worth it to see your sick patients go home again ☺️

Typical day: caring for any inpatients, setting up for surgery, running in house lab samples and carrying out consultations.

🎉Recognition of Vet Nurse Awareness Month continues with Lindsay....... Lindsay is almost 4yrs qualified and has been with Nithsdale Vets for 5 years now. We asked Lindsay a few questions:

Additional Qualifications/Training: HND in animal care and recently became a clinical supervisor for student veterinary nurses training with us

Hobbies: Adventures with my little family, spending time with friends, baking and drinking cocktails

Pets: 10 year old rabbit called poppy

Career Interests: Surgical procedures and Diagnostic imaging

Advice for anyone looking to become a Vet Nurse: It can be a tough couple of years but totally worth it in the end. Get as much work experience as you can.

Typical Day: Checking and monitoring in patients, setting up for the day's surgical procedures, monitoring anaesthesia, consults, running inhouse laboratory work so blood and urine samples etc, cleaning and the list goes on.

Favourite Part of Being a Vet Nurse: The feeling when you get to nurse a critical or ill patient and return a patient back to their family. No better feeling. Getting to work with the Nithsdale team!

This week we celebrate Emma.

Emma is due to graduate in August this year having just finished her degree last month. We asked Emma to share a bit more about herself....

Additional Qualification: Did an honours degree rather than the standard bachelor of science - BSc(Hons) Veterinary Nursing.

Fun Fact about me: At home we have 5 working sheepdogs!

Fun animal fact: Kangaroos can have 3 babies at once - 1 in the pouch, 1 at foot and 1 in the womb.

Hobbies: Breeding pedigree Suffolk sheep and working/training the collies on the farm.

Pets: 4 collies (Glen, Roy, Meg, Cap) and 1 kelpie cross (Taz)

Career Interests: Emergency Cases, Possibly going on to do further certificates after graduation.

Advice for anyone looking to be a vet nurse: Try to get as much experience in vet practice as you can prior to beginning the course, work hard, and be motivated and compassionate.

Typical Day: Doing nurse consults, setting up for and monitoring surgery, nursing inpatients and learning constantly

Favourite Part about being a vet nurse: Its a rewarding job - I particularly enjoy emergency cases and also carrying out nurse consults.

Special Thank You ✨

Emma has not long completed her dissertation for her degree: BSc (Hons) in Veterinary nursing. As part of this she carried out a study in both branches of Nithsdale Vets: Dumfries and Thornhill which required clients to fill out a 10-minute survey and have their pet body condition scored. Emma would like to thank all of the clients and dogs who took the time to participate in the study, it is very much appreciated and also all of her colleagues here at Nithsdale vets who with their flexibility and willingness made the study possible. She looks forward to graduation this August! 👩‍🎓

Pets: 3 Spaniels

Career Interests: Anaesthesia and Critical Care

Achievements: So far I have had 5 students gain 100% completion on their NPL, with my 6th student nearly finished.

Advice for anyone looking to become a Vet Nurse: It can be tough and requires a lot of work but is definitely worth it.

🎉NATIONAL RECEPTIONISTS DAY🎉

Our Reception team are nothing short of amazing! They are the first and last person you see when visiting the practice. No two days are the same, but what remains consistent is their compassion towards animals and their resilience as a Team! We asked Lesley, Linda, Finley and Sophie to tell us a bit more about their role and why they enjoy it:

💙Lesley: I love my job here at Nithsdale Vets. Having worked here within the practice for 11 years now, I enjoy speaking to all the clients and watching the patients grow. Regular puppy cuddles are my favourite part of the job, even when i do get peed on!

❤Linda: Meeting clients and their pets. Typical day can range from meeting and greeting clients, answering phones, taking payments, making up prescriptions, cleaning up pee/poo, the list goes on........although not forgetting the most important job of making the tea/coffee to keep us all going throughout the day!

💛Finley: I enjoy meeting a variety of different people and animals each day. I really like the team i work with, we all get along so well and it makes working so much easier. One aspect of the job i particularly enjoy is seeing clients coming in with their pet who may be unwell or coming in for an operation and to then see the client get their pet back healthy is really nice.

💜Sophie: I love working at Nithsdale Vets, having only started in December last year, i am learning something new everyday and i especially enjoy the puppy cuddles! I look forward to gaining more experience and expanding my knowledge.
