🐾 Today is Black Cat Appreciation Day🐾

Did you know that black cats are less likely to be adopted than cats of any other colour?
Some people believe that black cats are a symbol of bad luck, which is simply not true!
Here at White Lion we love our little black panthers - here are a few that have visited us this past week 🐈‍⬛

If you’re a black cat owner, we’d love to see some photos of your feline friends in the comments!🐈‍⬛🐾

Meet Toby and Tess 😍 During their annual vaccination appointment our vet noticed they both had thick plaque deposits on their teeth, and suspecting this was hiding more advanced dental decay, recommended dental procedures for both of them.

Luckily for Toby and Tess their owner took immediate action and as they are both part of our Healthy Pet Club she was able to use scheme benefits to significantly reduce the cost of the procedures.

The dental assessment under general anaesthetic confirmed that they were both suffering from advanced periodontal disease which would have been causing them considerable discomfort. Pets are experts at masking pain and it's not unusual for us to identify advanced disease in animals who are still eating well.

To treat the dental disease and help prevent future problems an impressive 19 teeth were extracted between the two of them - despite this they were both eating well soon after their procedures and were signed off within two weeks of the procedure by our nurse as they were doing great ☺️

If you are worried about your dogs teeth or have noticed smelly breath please don’t hesitate to get booked in for a dental check up with one of our vets so we can advise further - the sooner we catch it, the easier it is to treat! 🐾

Have you heard about the new cat law?? 🤔🐱 From 10th June it will become a legal requirement for all pet cats over the age of 20 weeks to be microchipped, even if you never plan to let them outside 🐾 If your cat is over 20 weeks old and not chipped please do get in touch with us so we can get you booked in with one of our lovely nurses for the procedure. Placing a microchip is quick and generally very well tolerated in conscious patients - Pushka, Mabel and Kevin were all chipped recently and were very brave! 😻

For more information about microchipping and the new law you can follow this link:

☀️☀️☀️It’s hot dog season! ☀️☀️☀️

As the temperature rises here in the UK so do the cases of heatstroke in our furry friends.

REMEMBER: It’s not just our canine companions that suffer from the warm weather. It is important to keep all of our pets at an appropriate temperature.

The main signs of heatstroke include :

💡Panting heavily, or difficulty breathing as well as an increased heart rate.

💡Bright red gums and tongues (as well as other mucous membranes) which can turn a grey, purple, or blue colour.

💡Vomiting, excess salivation/drooling.

💡Lethargy, shaking and collapse.

Heat stroke can lead to more serious situations, including seizures, organ failure, and worse case scenario - death.

Your pets are at an increased risk if they’re older or “geriatric”, young pups, those with flattened faces (brachycephalic) or those with thick long coats.

🐈🐱One of our staff cats Gandalf is making great use of his cool mat, which is one way of keeping them cool indoors. If you’d like to know more interactive and fun ways of keeping your pets of all shapes and sizes cool let us know 🐰🐶

Stay safe!
