It is now compulsory for all owned cats in England to be microchipped, making it more likely that lost or stray pet cats are reunited with their owners and returned home safely.

This includes cats that usually only stay indoors.

All keepers must ensure their cat is microchipped before they reach 20 weeks of age and their contact details stored and kept up to date in an approved pet microchipping database.

Dogs at The Romsey Show on Saturday

We have consulted with our Show vets and the Show would encourage visitors to seriously consider leaving their dogs at home on Saturday due to the predicted temperatures on the day.

We would strongly suggest any dogs that are of the brachycephalic breeds do not attend the Show, due to increased heat stroke risk and not a huge amount of shade available on the showground. We appreciate this does apply to other breeds as well and visitors know their dog. Please do make your dogs health a main priority.

Based on all of this we have made a decision to cancel the family dog show and the scurry competition. Under no circumstances are dogs to be left in cars. Our security team will immediately take action should a dog be found in a vehicle.

We have four vets covering the Show on Saturday and the ability to get exhibiting animals off the site if this is required at any point.

Myxomatosis is a well-known rabbit disease amongst the rabbit community, but if you are new to rabbits, you might be unaware of it.

Myxomatosis is a severe viral rabbit disease which was intentionally introduced in the UK over 70 years ago to control the wild rabbit population. Although the intentional spreading of it today is illegal, it is not unheard of.

Although intended for wild rabbits, domestic rabbits are likewise at great risk so preventative measures must be taken.

Myxomatosis is spread through direct contact with infected rabbits as well as through fleas, mosquitos, and mites that have bitten an infected rabbit 🦟

Prevention against this deadly disease is vital and boosters are required every year 💉

Vaccinations cannot guarantee absolute protection, but they can save lives. Vaccinated rabbits with Myxomatosis usually survive, whereas unvaccinated rabbits nearly always die.

To reduce the risk of Myxomatosis, please:

💉 Vaccinate your rabbits against Myxi every year.

🦟 Fit insect screens to outdoor enclosures.

💦 Eliminate standing water from your garden as this attracts mosquitos.

🐶 Treat other pets against fleas.

🐇 Secure your garden from wild rabbits or ensure direct contact is not possible.

🧹 Ensure enclosures are clean.

Flystrike in rabbits

Flystrike is when flies lay eggs on the rabbit. The maggots hatch and burrow into the rabbit’s flesh. It is a painful and life threatening condition.
If you see maggots on your rabbit, seek immediate veterinary attention.

To prevent Flystrike
Check your rabbit every day, particularly around the bottom
Keep your rabbit’s living area clean
Feed the correct diet to ensure their poos aren’t too soft
Ensure your rabbit has plenty of space to run around
Keep them at a healthy weight

We recommend using Rearguard. If you would like some, give us a call on 023 8026 8001.
If your bunny is on the Pet Health Club, Rearguard is included with the plan.

Fly strike happens when a fly lays its eggs on a rabbit’s fur which hatch into maggots and burrow under the skin to feed on flesh.
