With dog thefts soaring as much as 220% during 2020 it is time that we all review our home safety and safety whilst out walking.
Every dog has a price be that for puppy farms, reselling or baiting other dogs.
1). Most dogs are stolen from gardens (Don’t leave your dog alone outside) or burglaries. Don’t leave dog related items such as their leads, ball throwers etc outside your house. Pick up the poo!!! All of this advertises that you have a dog!
There are gangs of thieves that might ‘mark’ houses then break in. If you find anything that targets your house remove / erase it.
2). There are groups that will pretend to be a legitimate business such as rspca, dog warden, gardening services etc and they will knock on your door and feed you rubbish then barge their way in to take your dog. These people often have vans marked up to make them seem believable they may even wear uniform. I would personally ask them to put their business card through the door and leave. If pretending to be rspca or dog warden etc I wouldn’t answer the door but shout through that you are going to phone the company and ask them to verify the visit... do not accept the phone number they give you, look it up yourself, phone and check. Plus make sure that EVERYONE in your house knows not to answer the door to strangers. If you have teens that spend time alone in the house make sure they don’t even open the door to delivery people. Parcels can be left on the doorstep and can be retrieved as soon as the party has left the premises.
3). There are people that look for new puppies for sale, they will pretend to be interested in buying one and will steal a puppy or even the entire litter. If you have puppies for sale ask every interested party to provide you with a valid form of photo ID and a form of address proof such as utility bill sent to you via email or message PRIOR to the visit. If they don’t provide them then don’t let them visit your house, any legit person should be happy to prove their identity. Also ask to take their photo when they arrive or even better have CCTV covering the entrance.
If you are a breeder and keep your dogs / puppies in kennels or outbuildings and you are advertising new litters ensure that your security is bang on. Lighting, CCTV, intruder alarms in the outbuilding, secure locks (multiples), reinforced windows. It may sound OTT but better to make your property less appealing.
4). Some dogs are snatched whilst out on walks. Always leash your dog when taking them out of the car and when returning to the car. Gangs will try and distract you and then steal your off leash dog. When off lead make sure they have good recall and stay close by. Stay off your phone and be observant to everything around you. Also think about type of leash you use as some are harder to cut than others. Do NOT put your dog’s name on their tag! You could also add ‘chipped / spayed / neutered’ to the tag.
If you are walking your dog and someone stops you and starts making small talk and even asking about your dog, keep moving.
Vary your walking routes / places and times.
You can NOT carry weapons or objects with the intention of using them as weapons. If you do you could be found guilty of a criminal offence such as being in possession of an offensive weapon. HOWEVER, you can instantly arm yourself to defend yourself and your property - yes unfortunately at present, dogs are classed as property not as a family member but hopefully the government will change this. Examples of instant arming would be picking a stick up from the ground when in a woods and using reasonable force to protect yourself. Reasonable force would be enough force to make them back off or stop their actions so if they start running off and you continue battering them then oops you crossed the line. Instant arming could also be that if you carry an everyday item for genuine reasons and used it eg an umbrella, a dog deterrent spray etc this would be fine. Also there are LEGAL sprays which mark criminals with dye.
5). Never leave your dogs outside a shop either tied up or in the car. It takes seconds to steal dogs this way. Windows can be broken and dogs snatched. Leads cut / untied and dog snatched. Please don’t risk your beloved family members this way.
6). Using overt CCTV at home, contact alarms on back gates, CCTV door bells. Security Lighting, double locking doors not just leaving them on the flimsy old Yale locks, remove any ‘Warning, this (breed) lives here!’ Signs are just some ways that you can make your home a less tempting target. This obviously helps for normal burglary too not just dog theft.
