So proud of this guy today, his first session with multiple friends for a REALLY long time.

The vehicle anxiety was just too much for him and he was not being kind to his friends in the field but today he hopped in the van with minimal fuss and enjoyed every second of his group walk 💖🙏🏼

It's taken almost a year to get him here and it's been worth it 💛

This is such an important message, social media isn't real!

Your dog likely doesn't know what "perfect" is!

You don’t have to be the perfect dog owner.

I’ve spoken to a few dog owners this week that feel immense pressure to be perfect for their dogs. I suspect social media plays a huge part in this.

We open up Facebook or Instagram or TikTok and are flooded with videos of dogs doing amazing training, going on beautiful hikes, eating bowls of gourmet and perfectly arranged food. I know that’s the sort of thing I post of my dogs on my socials because put quite simply, it’s more fun and engaging!

However I want to tell you, that if you feel like you’re not the perfect dog owner, don’t be so hard on yourself. The secret is, none of us are!

A training session that’s done while you sit on the floor in some grotty pjs and isn’t TikTok worthy is absolutely okay.

A walk that’s around a dreary industrial estate because you haven’t got the energy that day to take them up a mountain and film a beautifully curated reel is okay.

A bowl of food that’s nothing but their normal kibble with a blob of yogurt and a couple of wrinkly blueberries on top that isn’t Instagram worthy is okay.

We put huge pressure on ourselves and if we aren’t attaining ‘perfect dog ownership’ every day we are often horrible to ourselves. The thing is, your dog still loves you. He still loves the little training session at 9pm in your pjs. He still loves the dreary industrial estate. He still loves the biscuits and blob of yoghurt with the wrinkly blueberry.

Dogs are incredible and they just live in the moment, and they don’t EVER think less of you for not being perfect.

Take the pressure off yourself. Comparison is the thief of joy after all and often when we compare our dogs lives to the social media dogs lives, we feel like we aren’t meeting expectations. The truth is, that social media is a snap shot in time and isn’t the whole picture. You don’t have to be perfect and filtered and edited to have a happy dog.

Save this for a day when you doubt yourself. When you are tired. When you are struggling. Because doing this will not only fill your dog's cup up but it will get you closer to where you are aiming for with your dog. Allow me to explain these in more details:

In no particular order...

🐾have contact & touch (so long as your dog desires that) that might be laying on the sofa together, in bed drinking tea, touching whilst you eat your toast. Touch is incredibly powerful but slow and calm touch also helps dogs and people regulate themselves and relax.

🐾refill a treat toy 4-5x - because let's not be stingy! And most of all, because if we want it to be rewarding for our dogs it needs to last more than 1 minute! I aim for refilling a toy enough times that will = 20 mins of play for Pip

🐾leave the house together 2-3x (unless you are settling in a rescue or have a dog scared of the outside world) these outings don't need to be to the park. They need to be to places that your dog enjoys, that you enjoy and where it's stress free. E.G. 1 could be sat on your front step watching the world go by. 1 could be a drive to the woods for off lead fun. 1 could be a walk to the cafe to get their daily sausage!!

🐾let them destroy something if they like doing it. Imagine finishing that email, that task on Click up or Slack. That's the dog version!

🐾make time to play a game they adore for 15 mins - could be you chasing each other, could be hide n seek, could be hide the ball in the grass.

🐾play find it. Because every dog loves this. It's tiring, it's fun and it can be played anywhere.

🐾sit in the sun together, it's an easy win. Do it on your balcony, on a bench, in your front garden.
