The Isle of Wight Reptilarium is an all weather tourist attraction based on the Isle of Wight, Situated at the site of the old Marine Aquarium at Fort Victoria Country Park, Freshwater,

Our exhibit of reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates of the world will be in naturalistic themed displays that explore the biomes these animals inhabit, we want to educate the public to the threats these animal

s face in the wild as well as our native herpetofauna that can be found on our doorstep in the adjacent country park. We are a small indoor, chargeable exhibit, that will take around 1.5 hours to explore (if you look at all the animals), we have live Reptiles, Amphibians and invertebrates on display to educate and inspire our visitors,

We really want to help the future generations and currently there is a shortage of suitable work experience placements on the Island for students looking to study Animal Care, we would like to provide much needed placements as well as traineeships and apprenticeships in conjunction with Island Training providers so we can inspire and enthuse the next generations of conservationists and animal care professionals, giving them basic work and animal care skills they can carry forward onto greater things. We also incorporate a Sanctuary for unwanted freshwater turtles that have been acquired as pets but now grown too large to be housed correctly at home,

Thank you for taking the time to support us and we look forward to welcoming you to the Isle of Wight Reptilarium!

Its been good fun getting out into the country park to do some coppicing to restore the view from the view point, This involved removing the growth from around 30 to 40 Sycamore Trees, and leaving wood and brush piles for the wildlife.

The area we coppiced is actually a very unique microclimate within the country park, it is on a landslip / undercliff that has its back to the sun all day, meaning it is very shaded all the time and the trees trap the moisture in the air underneath their canopies, with this in mind we had to think about just clearing enough trees to restore the view whilst leaving enough to maintain the microclimate,

The microclimate is evident in the abundance of ferns, mosses and lichens in there and loads of these very cool little "Door Snails"

All of the work was carried out by hand with hand tools!

Now that the summer holidays are over we have time to continue our conservation efforts, this time a spot of coppicing i...

Update on our unexpected maintenance issue!

On our morning inspection it became apparent we had a visitor in the night, they came in by making a hole in the brickwork and then proceeded to eat through cables behind one bank of enclosures in the desert room!

It was either very hungry burrowers or a Rat!!!

So today we have had to clear all of the ivy from the external wall to find the entry point, seal up the entry point and rewire an entire bank of enclosures, Mr rat has caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage.

Thankfully we check our installation daily so we can put a stop to things like this and prevent further problems.

Everything should be up and running by the end of the day and we expect to reopen tommorow.

05/09/2023

Due to a unexpected maitience issue we won't be open today.

The Reptilarium is being backed by individuals with over a decade of business experience on the Island in the pet reptile industry and we have just signed a 25 year lease on the building, it has had new exhibits installed and the doors opened in time for Easter 2017!! Thank you for taking the time to support our idea and we look forward to welcoming you to the Isle of Wight Reptilarium!
