As we move into Autumn, it is time to consider calf housing and how to reduce the chances of pneumonia over winter ❄️

Here are some key points to consider:
• Calves lose heat through their legs so add extra bedding for them to “nest” and maintain body temperature.
• Ensure calves are receiving at least 6-8L of milk a day
• Consider vaccination of calves to boost immunity against common viruses
• Ramp up the hygiene and cleanliness:
- Stock up on detergent, sponges & brushes
• Reduce moisture and draughts:
- Clean out drains & guttering
- Add shelters in pens & rubber strips on gates

Please give us a call if you have any questions or concerns, 01373 451115.

BLOWFLY 🪰

As we head into Autumn, the blowfly strike risk becomes increasingly difficult to predict accurately as the weather becomes more variable.

We have seen an increased number of cases over the past week as treatments applied at the start of summer may not still be fully protective and growing fleeced increases susceptibilty.

To read more about the causes, signs and treatments, please visit: https://alerts.nadis.org.uk/

Have you thought about lung worm yet this year? 🚨 🪱

We have recently identified an increase in lungworm cases over the last few weeks. Outbreaks of lungworm (Dictyocaulus viviparus) are unpredictable, however disease is most commonly observed in the late Summer and early Autumn. Young cattle in their first grazing season are at the highest risk of disease, although older cattle can also become infected.

Lungworm causes infection in the respiratory tract and is typically characterised by a “husk” cough, although other clinical signs also include:
🪱 Rapid / difficulty breathing
🪱 Drooling
🪱 Loss of condition
🪱 Standing with an outstretched neck
🪱 Fever – in cases of secondary bacterial infection
🪱 Sudden death – in severe cases

Prevention and control include:
🪱 Vaccination prior to turnout provides short-term immunity until longer lasting cover develops through exposure at grazing
🪱 Avoid grazing young cattle in known contaminated pastures
🪱 Monitor at risk / suspect groups via faecal samples
🪱 Anthelmintic treatment in the face of an outbreak

If you are worried about lungworm, give the practice a call on 01373 451115 for more information.

Last week vet Amber attended a day of CPD focusing on dairy heifer rearing supported by Boehringer Ingelheim and Trouw Nutrition GB.

It was a great opportunity to share ideas of how we as vets can take a multidisciplinary approach working with farmers, nutritionists and pharmaceutical companies to help heifers achieve bulling weight.

If you would like to learn more about how you can optimise your heifer rearing, please do not hesitate to call the practice on 01373 451115.

Farm Coordinators - The ladies we couldn’t function without! 🌟

Their list of jobs cover a whole range from organising all of the TB admin, dealing with emergencies, cleaning and preparing kits for the vets to organising events and making sure our vets days run as smoothly and efficiently as possible.

Claire has been busy cleaning and preparing new sterilised stitch kits ready for the next surgeries and Liz had the pleasure of serving some of our clients in reception whilst Clare was out observing a TB test!

5PM - Chris James, Sarah and our vet student, Grace are carrying out OPU (O**m Pick Up).

OPU involves collecting eggs directly from the o***y of the donor animal before sending them to a local laboratory for IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation)

James can usually be found at the back of the cow, assisted by Sarah who runs the aspiration equipment and ensures the collection fluids are flowing freely and Chris is in charge of the microscope and lab side.
