Ketone monitoring

The elves have been busy on farm today with vet Amber measuring the blood ketone levels in some freshly calved dairy cows.

A ketone-meter is a useful tool which can be used to measure blood ketone levels to determine if an individual is suffering from ketosis. Ketosis is a condition which occurs during periods of high metabolic stress, most commonly in early lactation (< 1 month), when there is an imbalance between energy demands and supply. Early detection via blood ketone testing helps identify and manage subclinical ketosis before it impacts milk yield and reproductive health. Regular monitoring, correct nutrition and good transition cow management can significantly reduce the risk of ketosis and keep your herd healthy.

Fun fact: some people can smell ketones on the breath of an affected animals - a sweet smell like pear drops.

Forage Analysis

Trace element supplementation is often overlooked, but mineral status is a vital aspect of animal health and optimising production. The effects of trace element deficiency can be vast, from severe deficiencies directly causing disease and even death to poor immunity, calving difficulties, poor fertility, weak calves, or just subtle under-performance.

If you would like any advice or have any questions at all, please give us a call on 01373 451115.

The Resilience Funding Chronicles #2:

On this Resilience fund visit, Vicki was investigating nutrition and metabolic health of milking cows. There can be subtle differences between what we assume cows are being fed "on paper", to what they actually eat, based on factors such as feed space, stocking density, chop length and silage quality.

Vicki had her laser out today and was measuring the troughs, to ensure there was enough space per cow to maximise intakes. Do you know the minimum feed space that should be available for each milking cow?

This was another free visit carried out under the Future Farming Resilience Funding - please give us a call if you would like to find out more!

On Saturday Chris, James and Alex played in the 20th anniversary of the Bristol Vet School Old Boys vs the current Vet School rugby team.

James and Chris played in the centre and hilariously both got injured during the 20th minute! Chris reported that "the performance in the opening 20 by the Wyvern centre partnership was crucial to setting the tone for the rest of the match". Alex meanwhile played the full 80mins at full back with plenty of defensive duties and ball in hand to show his pace.

The Old Boys went on to win 31-7. The event and dinner afterwards generated over ยฃ8,000 for Vetlife which is a charity providing emotional, financial and mental health support to the veterinary community.

Happily they are all back at work this morning looking a little worse for wear and moving a lot slower than normal!
