A giant ship's engine broke down and no one could repair it, so they hired a Mechanical Engineer with over 30 years of experience.
He inspected the engine very carefully, from top to bottom. After seeing everything, the engineer unloaded his bag and pulled out a small hammer.
He knocked something gently. Soon, the engine came to life again. The engine has been fixed!
A week later the engineer mentioned to the ship owner that the total cost of repairing the giant ship was £20,000.
"What?!" said the owner. “You did almost nothing. Give us a detailed bill."
The Engineer replied him “The answer is simple:”
Tap with a hammer: £2
Know where to knock and how much to knock: £19,998.
The importance of appreciating one's expertise and experience.. because those are the results of struggles, hands on experiences, studying, and even tears along the way.....

If I can understand a dogs behavioral 'issues' and build a realistic training plan to suit you, your dog, as well as understanding your breeds natural characteristics in one session, it's because I've spent 25 years learning how to do that.
You owe me for the years, not that one initial session.

We have a lot of unpicking and relationship building to do with this handsome Romanian rescue.
Although his DNA profile failed to list the Carpathian SD, I’m pretty sure this breed should be up towards the top (educate me otherwise please 🙏), his characteristics are pretty similar with previous dogs of this type I have worked with over the years; with that said, what we have is a natural guarding breed living the life of non guarding breed, it’s not going to end well on the current trajectory.
His ‘people’ are the best owners any dog could wish for and I really hope we can work together more by changing their behaviour first and foremost, which will naturally make a massive impact on his state of mind.
Having truly followed the path of their previous trainer, it wasn’t without trying, dogs like this take experience like mine.
I get it. I understand it.
I want this dog to live his best life with his people, I also want this dog to be the best dog he can so his owners can enjoy him and feel safe and in control at all times.
Let’s roll up our sleeves and go on this journey together ❤️

I take training seriously but make training fun 🤩
Here is my absolute favourite little Border Terrier.
We have come a long way in a short time modifying his behaviour so he’s easier to live with and easier to walk, tweaking his day to day management and training him to focus when necessary, we’ve still a few hurdles to overcome but we are all now on the right path.
Love my job ❤️

‘Rooster’ at 5 months, blending in rather nicely on our camping trip.
Taking care of the little things like ‘play’ and ‘settle’, soaking up sights, sounds and smells so they become familiar.
Doing ‘nothing much’ together means doing everything together in our dogs world, setting him up for a lifetime of adventures.
Training starts before the training starts…

Not wanting to make a mountain out of a molehill with these two Goldies, but the combined strength had become too much to be walked together; in addition one of them had become somewhat reactive towards other dogs.
On observing their behaviour I didn’t feel like there was anything really broken that needed fixing.
Together, with the owner, we agreed to condition both dogs to the head collar, the immediate results were that both dogs could once again be walked together and the reactivity has now disappeared.
Mission accomplished 👌

Not much to see here except for a beautiful dog, now in good hands whose owners have invited me to jump on board and join them on a journey of understanding and adjusting her behaviour.
Behaviour modification starts at home, in a calm environment where time can be spent building relationships, training and understanding the importance that nutrition can have on an anxious mind.
I don’t post sensational videos of dogs reacting towards other dogs, nor do I need to witness the behaviour to be able to help the dog.
I sit on no fences, always working to the best of my (over 25 years of experience) ability to help your dog to live their best life with you.

If only I enjoyed writing posts on social media, but then that would take me away from actually training both your dogs and mine, which is exactly what I want to be doing.
I don’t have a media team behind me creating content from my clients, this just doesn’t rub very well with me. So I’ll continue to post every now & then to keep my accounts active.
Here are 2 dog I had the pleasure of working with today, both pretty much a blank canvas… let the 121 training journeys begin.

This recently rehomed stunner has a lot of training to catch up on to become a joy to live with and a walking companion.
Having virtually no response to her name changing it and conditioning a new name would be a great place to start.
Let’s ditch that harness and, for now, condition a head collar so walks are enjoyable and safe for both ends of the lead.
A blank training canvas is an absolute joy to work with, I can’t wait to take this dog on a training journey at our training centre in Frome.

Harvey took a day trip up from Devon to work with me today.
For most dogs and owners a daily walk is the absolute highlight of the day, for Harvey’s owners though it has turned into a ducking & diving affair avoiding dogs at all costs as Harvey really struggles with reactivity.

I am so glad Harvey is now in our training system, I have every faith that there is no real intent behind his ‘public swearing 🤬 ’ outbursts and that we can modify and balance his behaviour through training, giving clear commands of what to do and what not to do.

German Shepherds (in general ) like to be told what to do, it gives them a job, a purpose, which in turn creates a calmer state of mind.
Train your GSD well and reap the rewards.

His owners, who I’m sure won’t mind me saying, now have the knowledge of exactly what to do to modify their own behaviour in order to change his 😘😀

When positive only training has failed 😞
When your dog has redirected and bitten the lead holder
When frustration on sight of another dog is so high that holding on for dear life is the only option
When any sign of focus or engagement outside the house is completely unavailable to work with
When being a danger to man or beast is a real concern
Something has to give…..right?

Session 1. Part 1
We build a foundation of understanding in a calm environment with a calm state of mind.
We condition the prong collar to enable us to have control
Session 1. Part 2
We have compliance.
We walk around people and other dogs
We have avoidance of other dogs
We have a calm state of mind
We have focus
We now have the dog safety under control

Only now we can start training.
In a few months once behaviours become established the collar will be removed.

Very rarely do I want or need to use the prong collar, but with this dog it absolutely was the safest option as other methods had proven unsuccessful.
To change the behaviour we have to change the state of mind, to even begin changing the state of mind we need to have control when out in public or they will become self employed, delighting in doing the job they were originally bred for…. Herding, Guarding and protecting.

This week I have had my share of cuteness overload, working with puppies and helping owners ‘adjust their sails’ to find those calmer waters.

A very hot behaviour session this afternoon with this super Cockerpoo who not only doesn’t like to be touched by strangers but has a natural tendency to be the family alert dog watching out for perceived danger ⚠️ from any and every angle.
Taking away choices and teaching some key fundamentals will soon give the family a role reversal and a super steady dog.
Another complex list of unnecessary behaviours that gets dog trainers like me excited.

Sometimes we just have to accept that some dogs don’t like to be stroked by strangers 🤷‍♀️ so it’s OK to tell people to just ignore your dog, by doing this you will actually be increasing your dogs confidence around strangers.
However cute they are! 🥰
Always advocate for your dog.

Complex behaviours are my passion, I absolutely love learning all about a particular dog, breed, and understanding why they are exhibiting the behaviours that the owner wants and needs me to fix.
We’ve got a bumpy road ahead of us with this girl and I can’t wait to hear the progress report in 4-6 weeks which will enable us to move on to stage 2 of the behaviour modification programme.

Meet this handsome Labrador.
He is reliably reactive, pushy, demanding and is a powerhouse of going his own way.
Changing his state of mind starts with changing his living arrangements for the greater good, instilling rules and boundaries in the home or we can kiss goodbye to making any change outside.
Increasing the value of food, play and attention.
Better management on walks.
Training starts today; a trained dog is not only a happy dog but a safe dog as well.

When you focus on what is being said, rather than what you think is being said, you will understand the training or behaviour plan we set out for you with clarity.
Actively listening and being fully present is a skill.
