Bran’s custom total hip replacement story as seen on The Supervet Rescue Special tonight.
Three-legged rescue puppy Bran had one of his back legs amputated after a fracture caused by cruelty failed to heal properly. Shortly after being adopted by Kasey and Joey, they noticed he was limping on his remaining back leg and eventually he could barely walk, dragging himself around using his front legs.
Bran was diagnosed with hip dysplasia, a condition where the hip socket and the femur don’t fit together properly. The hip joint on his remaining back leg had dislocated completely and he was in severe pain. Bran benefited from a highly specialised customised implant system called the AceFitz™ (acetabular augmentation prosthesis) designed by Professor Noel Fitzpatrick – an implant that allows us to repair even the loosest hip joints where there are no sockets left.
Check out the animation of Bran’s procedure.

We’re in the pool this afternoon with handsome German Shepherd Sabo and Hydrotherapist Lauren! 💦🐶
4-year-old Sabo has regular hydrotherapy pool sessions for conservative management of his hip dysplasia. As a hind limb amputee, hydrotherapy is a great form of exercise as the support of the water helps him to increase his muscle mass, maintains strength in his forelimbs, improves cardiovascular fitness and is anti-concussive. 👍
As you can see, he absolutely loves it and squeaks with excitement for the ball! 🎾 💙

Working in referrals our nurses develop lots of new skills, and with the support of a mentor, quickly become confident!
RVN Emily here, rotates between our wards and prep nursing teams. Pictured here in the wards, she’s mastered using our portable ultrasound machine to scan our spinal patients’ bladders and express them.
“One of my favourite parts of the job is caring for and seeing the patients recover after surgery, especially the spinal patients who regain movement in their hind legs and can walk again! It is very rewarding!”

Another day and another lovely dog called Bob!
It was a real delight to see 10-month-old Miniature Schnauzer puppy Bob happily wagging his tail in reception, as last Christmas Eve he was admitted as an emergency with a fractured pelvis after being injured in an RTA, missing his first Christmas!
Today he was back for his 6-week recheck with Surgical Resident Anna Julia Salmina and was a very good, well-behaved boy…and even had a little haircut whilst sedated for his radiographs!
We’re pleased that Bob is progressing well, as expected, and we wish him a good recovery. 💙

Meet sweet English Springer Spaniel Monty, whose story we’re sharing today to mark World Radiography Day by delving into the imaging modalities that were used for diagnosis, surgical planning and postop care for his complex orthopaedic condition – bilateral antebrachial growth deformity.
We’re pleased to share that one year on from his surgery with Orthopaedic Registrar Mario Coppola, Monty is now happily living the spritely, energetic, pain-free life every springer deserves!
Thank you to our wonderful radiographers for your crucial role in our patients’ treatment journeys.

The sun was shining down on 1-year-old rescue dog Barley this morning, as he bravely tried out his new hip with the support of RVN Charlotte, Physiotherapist Hannah and Specialist Jan.
Get well soon Barley! 💙
Introducing a few of our happy hydrotherapy patients who visited us today.
Meet fabulous Fred! This happy five-year-old springer spaniel is one of our hydrotherapy regulars who visits Amie for maintenance swims after he had a right pantarsal arthrodesis (ankle fusion) with us when he was six months old.
Labrador Poodle cross Findel gave his best smile on the underwater treadmill with Lydia. The eight-year-old is nine weeks post-TPLO surgery, after rupturing his cruciate ligament, and is making good improvements each session and using his leg well.
16-year-old Jack Russell Terrier Rhubarb is a true gent, who had spinal surgery (hemilaminectomy) with us back in 2020. He happily stood on the pod while Amie gently massaged his hip flexors, adductors, triceps and pecs, and enjoyed a good swimming session.
And last but not least, our fluffy friend, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Button, who six years ago was a patient under our orthopaedic service for developmental elbow disease, but is now a rehabilitation regular, visiting both our physio and hydro teams to help maintain his fitness and keep him in good condition.
Keep up the good work friends! 💙

High five to all our canine friends this National Dog Day from our sweet spaniel patient Rosey! 🐾
7-year-old Rosey’s mum is Surgical Technician Kirsty, pictured here before she had TPLO surgery earlier this week with Senior Surgeon Jan Janovec for her partially ruptured right cranial cruciate ligament, and after surgery on a comfort break with our caring ward VCAs.
We hope she’ll soon be healed, pain-free and back to her happy high-fiving self!
Get well soon Rosey and happy National Dog Day to all our animal friends. 💙
