🐻 A Bear-sized breakthrough: Boki’s MRI at Fitzpatrick Referrals 🐾

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Wildwood Trust and Fitzpatrick Referrals have teamed up to provide advanced care for one of our most beloved residents, Boki the European Brown Bear.

As many of Wildwood’s followers know, Boki has recently been suffering from what we believe to be seizures. Last month, Boki received a crucial MRI scan at Fitzpatrick Referrals, marking an extraordinary moment in veterinary medicine. This kind of medical imaging for a bear is incredibly rare, but thanks to the expertise of the Fitzpatrick team, we were able to gain valuable insights into Boki’s health and future prognosis.

The welfare of our animals is at the heart of everything we do, and this partnership allowed us to take Boki’s care to the next level. We’re so grateful to Fitzpatrick Referrals for making this possible and for their continued dedication to pushing the boundaries of veterinary care.

Boki’s welfare is our absolute priority. Our expert keeper and veterinary team will carefully consider the results of his scan, as well as taking advice from specialists at Fitzpatrick Referrals, to help decide on the best course of action for Boki.

We will provide an update in due course and thank you for your understanding and kind words.

Meet our surgeons ~ Dr Sarah Girling

Sarah is an EBVS® European Specialist in Small Animal Surgery and joined our team in 2006!

She’s one of Fitzpatrick Referrals’ most talented surgeons with all the necessary skills to manage your patient with joint disease (stifle/elbow/shoulder, arthroscopy, joint replacement, elbow unicompartment resurfacing), fracture repair and surgical spinal problems at any level.

She has a particular interest in total hip replacement (THR) and contributes data to the BVOA-UoL THR Registry; this database follows patients post-THR throughout their lifetime. We hope information acquired from data acquisition can assist clients in their decision-making.

Sarah has been a great mentor and colleague over the decades to so many in the veterinary community and we’re so proud of all her work!

Fabulously-named Fitz came to the right place for her treatment!

Four-year-old Border Collie Fitz was kindly referred to us by Yew Tree Veterinary Centre to investigate lameness in her left forelimb. Under the care of specialist Dr James Guthrie, Fitz had a thorough workup including a CT scan. Her CT imaging revealed a number of issues with both her elbows, including a chronic mineralised fragment in the joint (osteochrondritis dissecans) and an acute fissure to the medial coronoid process in her left elbow.

To help alleviate Fitz’s painful conditions, her family opted for James to perform arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) on her left elbow and had two procedures carried out: a subtotal coronoid ostectomy (SCO) and a biceps ulnar release (BURP) to address the fissure to the medial coronoid process.

We wish her a good recovery and look forward to welcoming Fitz back to Fitz in the coming weeks to continue her rehabilitation. 💙

Thank you to our colleagues at Yew Tree Vets for entrusting us with her care.

It was a pleasure to see our sweet friend Casper back for his 6-week recheck recently.

Back in May, poor Casper was found as a 4-month-old stray kitten with a Salter-Harris type II fracture of the distal left tibia and greenstick fracture of the fibula.

His fracture repair was carried out by Surgical Resident Stefano Manca and he came for his recheck with Surgical Resident Anna Giulia Salmina (pictured).

We’re pleased with Casper’s recovery following surgery and wish him all the best for the future as he settles into a new home.

As you can see he made lots of friends at our practice and lapped up the fuss! 💙

This weekend, Receptionist Scarlet and her family will be taking part in Cancer Research UK's Race for Life in memory of her mum Donna, who was a much-loved member of our team at Fitzpatrick Referrals for 16 years.

If you would like to support her fundraising, you can do so here:

💙

In memory of Donna.

The episode of The Supervet airing tonight, like dozens of others before, features the much-loved member of our reception team, Donna Chorley, whom we sadly lost to cancer at the end of last year.

Donna was a part of the Fitz team for 16 years, and we all miss her greatly. Her positive and reassuring presence to both the team and the families we serve was widely felt. We remember Donna for her kindness and dedication. Please join us in celebrating her life tonight.
