Wire mesh

Did you know that chicken wire is designed to keep chickens in… but it is NOT designed to keep foxes out!

When designing your chicken run - safety MUST be your primary priority!

Foxes can chew through wire that is less than 0.9 mm in diameter!

So it is best to use wire that is thicker in diameter to prevent foxes or badgers

The mesh I have used is 16 gauge galvanised wire mesh, which is 1.6mm thick and a 1 inch aperture (which will stop foxes and badgers, rats are a separate issue)

What else can you do to help protect your flock?

- Make sure that all wire is correctly installed and attached
- Strengthen weak points, check joins and joints
- Create a 50cm wire mesh overhang at the top to deter foxes
- Make fence posts hard to climb up or use metal poles
- Dig the mesh down under the ground and make a mesh skirt dug, cover this with slabs or bricks to stop digging
- Make sure that foxes can’t jump down in from a neighbouring shed or fence
- Add a roof - make sure it is secure and solid -
- Make sure nesting box lids are secured
- Adding karabinas to gate locks will stop paw lock luck
- Don’t forget the underside of your chicken coop if wooden - most cheap wooden coops aren’t predator proof
- Add an automatic door opener and closer - .uk or
