🦴 Heel Work Mastery with Your Gundog! 🦴

Hello Gundog enthusiasts! Today, we’re diving into the art of heel work, a crucial skill for any Gundog. Here's a detailed step-by-step guide to help you and your furry friend master this important training technique. Remember, patience and kindness are key to successful training.

Step 1: Start with Your Dog by Your Side
Start with your dog standing calmly by your side on a lead. Have plenty of dog treats ready. Hold the lead in your left hand and the treats in your right hand. This starting position is essential for establishing control and focus.

Step 2: Use the "HEEL" Cue
Use a clear and consistent cue, such as "HEEL." Begin walking at a steady pace, keeping the treats close to your dog’s nose to guide them. This helps your dog understand that staying close to you is rewarding.

Step 3: Reward and Praise
As your dog follows the treats and stays by your side, reward them with a treat and lots of praise. Keep the sessions short and fun to maintain your dog’s interest and enthusiasm. Positive reinforcement is crucial for building a strong bond and ensuring your dog enjoys the training.

Step 4: Increase Distance and Distractions
Gradually increase the distance and you can introduce distractions when your dog is doing really well at their heel work. If your dog starts to pull ahead or lag behind, gently guide them back to your side and use the "HEEL" cue again. Always reward them for getting it right. This step helps your dog learn to maintain focus and stay close even when there are distractions.

Step 5: Practise in Different Environments
Practise heel work in various environments to reinforce the behaviour. Start in a quiet area and gradually move to more distracting places. Consistency is key! This will help your dog generalise the behaviour and perform well regardless of the surroundings.

Remember, patience and consistency are essential. Every dog learns at their own pace, so keep the training sessions positive and enjoyable. Harsh handling can damage your relationship with your dog and hinder their learning. Kindness and patience will yield the best results.

BE CAREFUL THROWING BALLS FOR A FEW DAYS.

In all the posts about fireworks and worried animals, this important message often gets lost.

The sticks on the fireworks can land or be stuck in at funny angles in the grass and be almost invisible if your running end on to the tip, especially if your dogs focus is elsewhere.

This leads to dogs stabbing themselves directly onto the sticks.

I purposefully haven’t posted a picture of the aftermath as nobody needs to see that. But hopefully it goes without saying that an empaled dog is not a happy dog and at best is a vet bill… at worst… well……

Chuckkng the ball for the next few days just isn’t worth it in my opinion.
