Please message page or contact The Dog House Essex with enquiries. All breeds and sizes welcome. About me- I’ve been working with dogs and other animals for the past five years, have an HND in Animal Care and am in the final stages of a degree in Animal Behaviour. I have taken additional courses in canine body language and first aid. This gives me the ability to prioritise the comfort and welfare

of your dog, recognise if they become stressed, and help them to calm down and be comfortable in the grooming environment. I spend much of my free time developing my skills and knowledge with various courses and seminars, and have volunteered with rescue dogs across several countries. Pricing is based on time and materials spent on your dog, which is affected by size, coat type and condition, behaviour, and style requested. I commit to charging a fair price for the amount of work and never to under or over charge, and therefore can only provide an estimate of the cost of your groom. The welfare and comfort of your dog is my first priority. For that reason I have a Safety Policy-
When a dog cannot handle grooming procedures we need to slow down. If at any time your dog gets nervous, scared, aggressive, or even silly, I will slow down and help your pet to be comfortable and calm. It's very important to me that pets in my care are kept safe and stress free. I have sharp tools and need to prevent injuries. I will work with your pet to help them feel comfortable, building a great experience for future grooming, rather than pushing them through stress for a perfect cut. I may decide to end the groom before expected services are complete if your dog is displaying high levels of stress. I will charge for the time I spend working on your dog.

Major came in yesterday for an emergency groom as his nails were getting caught in his ears when he scratched. Keeping your dogs nails short is for their benefit more than yours- having overgrown nails can feel like wearing an ill fitting shoe. His owners noticed that they needed some attention and brought him in. How cute is he waiting to be picked up? Nail trims are available on a walk in basis and on their own are £10.

Bijou was one of my first grooming customers when I moved down south. She’s adopted, and her mum has expressed concerns about her teeth before, but is anxious about her going under anaesthesia. This was after a 1 hour session- the ultrasonic tooth cleaning isn’t a magic wand, but you can see the difference! Even her gums look pinker and healthier. Bijou is booked in for further sessions and I’m looking forward to revealing more lovely white teeth under the plaque.

Lovely Lyra was my first ultrasonic tooth brushing customer! She’s still very young and so only had a tiny bit of tartar built up on her canines and some staining on her premolars. She was here for her groom too, so after her bath she was wrapped up in a towel to dry while I cleaned her teeth. When I first started grooming her Lyra was quite shy and worried about the whole process- nowadays she still needs encouragement to get into the bath but will happily walk into the salon, hop on the table and copes amazingly with the drier which used to frighten her.
Because we’ve built up a trusting relationship, brushing her teeth was a breeze! Prevention is better than cure- well done to Lyra’s dad for getting her started early.

Recently the gorgeous Bella came for a clip off. At 16 years old, she was far more comfortable being groomed on the floor rather than up on the table. By clipping her before the bath and using a drying coat it was possible to reduce the time needed for her haircut, and keep her calm and comfortable during her groom. Bella was a good sport, and a great example of the need to adapt to every dogs individual needs. See you again soon Bella!

The adorable 4 month old Ralph came to visit today; here he is after his bath and all fluffed out. I like to book out plenty of time for the fluffier puppies so they can have plenty of breaks, treats and cuddles whilst being dried and brushed out. Ralph was worried at first but settled into the groom and was a total superstar. It’s so important not to rush puppies early experiences and give them plenty of time to adjust to the experience. See you again soon Ralph!

The adorable 13 week old Rolo joined us today! This is the perfect age for a gentle introduction to grooming. Rolo got a bath, dry, nails clipped and ears cleaned, with plenty of exploring the salon and play in between. This slowed down approach helped him stay confident throughout and go home to mum looking and feeling great. See you in four weeks Rolo!

Pepper’s owners like her nice and short, but love her adorable long eyelashes! Pepper, like many dogs, hates having her front legs and paws handled or groomed, and especially having her nails clipped. Her owners have even been told that the vet may have to sedate her for nail clips. Although it’s taken a few grooms, Pepper was brave enough to allow me to clip and scissor her front legs yesterday, shave her paw pads, and even clip her nails! By using quieter, gentler equipment, changing my grooming routine to suit her, and building trust, Pepper has made amazing progress 🥰

What is gentle, low stress dog grooming and why do I practice it?
Every dog needs some level of grooming, whether that’s just a nail clip and occasional bath or extremely regular coat care such as brushing, bathing and clipping ! Many dogs really struggle with this both at home and in a professional setting. The equipment we use can be terrifying to dogs, eg having their legs clipped, having scissors near their face, or the loud noise and intense feeling of the blow drier. Some dogs take a while to trust strangers and so can be fearful of their groomer from the get go.

Unfortunately, the traditional model of dog grooming focuses on the perfection of the haircut and the speed of the service over the comfort of the dog. Whilst there have been big changes in the industry, there is still a lack of understanding of dog behaviour and good handling skills in some salons.
Along with this, the pressure to give the owners the perfect look for their dog can lead to dogs being overhandled and pushed past their ‘stress threshold’.

I practice a style of grooming which focuses on the dog first, observing and reacting to their body language to give them space if they need space, building up trust and encouraging calm behaviour.
It’s amazing how many dogs respond to this and in just one session improve tremendously. Some dogs need longer before they can learn to trust and cope with parts or all of the grooming process. For these dogs I offer shorter rehabilitation sessions.

Of course, I love making dogs look cute and beautiful as much as the next groomer! By building your dogs trust in the process, we make it possible. However, the main focus is the mental and physical health of your dog.
