Rant time! Sparked by a friend of mine; excellent trainer; flavour of last month and airbrushed into the oblivion…

I do not mind if a partnership needs several trainers. One for the front end, one for the middle and one for the back end.
One will be good at exercises; another shed light through transitions; another finding that positional correction; another the tack; and another will be brave and push, and another take longer if confidence is an issue. One may help the showjumping; another the gallop; another the cross country; and perhaps another just how to survive a hack!
This partnership is the centre of a bicycle wheel and one needs all the spokes to help it go around smoothly.
But honesty is paramount; list them all in your credits; thank them and join them together because each in their own way is trying their hardest to help the centre.
It is a team that help to make one’s horsey world go around; and often with horses one trainers thoughts might help one horse and another another.
Be generous if you want your trainer to remain generous to you. Be honest; and of course some loyalty never goes amiss.
Picture of partnership that has had three trainers help them this year although the jockey has several more!

*** FOCUS ON RUGGING ***

Continuing our focus on rugging, this figure illustrates quite nicely what happens if we "over-rug". The image shows the air temperature in blue on a fairly typical autumn day similar to those many of us are experiencing now.

The horse has a 50g turnout rug on and the horse is clipped. The morning starts cool but it warms up to between 15°C and 20°C for much of the day. We can see that the horses's surface temperature measured under the rug follows a similar pattern BUT by 11:00 in the morning the temperature under the rug is already above the horses upper limit of its thermoneutral or "comfort" zone. And it stays above the 25°C line until later afternoon when the sun starts to get lower in the sky and the temperature starts to drop.

So once again, the message ISN'T DON'T RUG, the message IS DON'T RUG TOO EARLY, DON'T RUG ACCORDING TO HOW YOU FEEL & DON'T OVER-RUG.

Your horse covered in hair, is ~7 times larger than you but only has 2-3 times more skin surface. Most heat is lost at the skin surface. Your horse loses heat much more slowly than you. They won't feel the cold when we do.

In this example, this horse would likely benefit from a 100g rug overnight but doesn't really need one during the day if it stays dry.

For more information and resources on rugging, including rug testing and rug user surveys, please check out our website https://drdavidmarlin.com/rugging-round-up/

"No. 1. Get your tack and equipment just right, and then forget about it and concentrate on the horse.

No. 2. The horse is bigger than you are, and it should carry you. The quieter you sit, the easier this will be for the horse.

No. 3. The horse's engine is in the rear. Thus, you must ride your horse from behind, and not focus on the forehand simply because you can see it.

No. 4. It takes two to pull. Don't pull. Push.

No. 5. For your horse to be keen but submissive, it must be calm, straight and forward.

No. 6. When the horse isn`t straight, the hollow side is the difficult side.

No. 7. The inside rein controls the bending, the outside rein controls the speed.

No. 8. Never rest your hands on the horse's mouth. You make a contract with it: "You carry your head and I'll carry my hands."

No. 9. If the horse can't learn to accept what you're doing, it isn't any good.

No. 10. Once you've used an aid, put it back.

No. 11. You can exaggerate every virtue into a defect.

No. 12. Always carry a stick, then you will seldom need it.

No. 13. If you`ve given something a fair trial, and it still doesn't work, try something else—even the opposite.

No. 14. Know when to start and when to stop. Know when to resist and when to reward.

No. 15. If you're going to have a fight, you pick the time and place.

No. 16. What you can't accomplish in an hour should usually be put off until tomorrow.

No. 17. You can think your way out of many problems faster than you can ride your way out of them.

No. 18. When the horse jumps, you go with it, not the other way around.

No. 19. Don`t let over-jumping or dull routine erode the horse's desire to jump cleanly. It's hard to jump clear rounds if the horse isn't trying.

No. 20. Never give up until the rail hits the ground.

No. 21. Young horses are like children—give them a lot of love, but don't let them get away with anything.

No. 22. In practice, do things as perfectly as you can; in competition, do what you have to do.

No. 23. Never fight the oats.

No. 24. The harder you work, the luckier you get."

With the continued hot weather, please keep objects like mirrors out of direct sunlight as they can concentrate the sun's rays, causing near-by objects to set fire. It’s also really important to keep aerosols or any other flammable items out of direct sunlight too.

"A Lady asked an old street vendor: "How much do you sell your eggs for?" The old man replied "0.50p an egg, madam.” The Lady responded, “I'll take 6 eggs for £2.00 or I'm leaving.” The old salesman replied, “Buy them at the price you want, Madam. This is a good start for me because I haven't sold a single egg today and I need this to live.”

She bought her eggs at a bargain price and left with the feeling that she had won. She got into her fancy car and went to a fancy restaurant with her friend. She and her friend ordered what they wanted.

They ate a little and left a lot of what they had asked for. So they paid the bill, which was £150. The ladies gave £200 and told the fancy restaurant owner to keep the change as a tip.

This story might seem quite normal to the owner of the fancy restaurant, but very unfair to the egg seller.

The question it raises is this;
Why do we always need to show that we have power when we buy from the needy or someone with a small business, trying to make some extra money?

And why are we generous to those who don't even need our generosity?

I once read somewhere that a father used to buy goods from poor people at a high price, even though he didn't need the things. Sometimes he paid more for them.

His children were amazed. One day they asked him "why are you doing this dad?" The father replied: "It's charity wrapped in dignity.”

We are all climbing a hill but at different stages…always be kind.

Not a joke...

Have you ever wondered why you can have a 15 acre field and part of it is chewed down to nubs and the other part has grass a hand high, But your horse is constantly grazing in the chewed down part?

Grass 6 inches and taller has less sugars than grass under 6 inches.

For every inch drop below 6 inches, the fructan (sugar) content rises.

Grass under 6 inches is stressed like it's a Monday morning with a project deadline. It uses sugar to repair itself.

Stop mowing your fields short.

Stop grazing your chubbys on chewed down grass. (this is why grazing muzzles are so touted...they keep the horse from being able to get much short grass)

(We aren't saying let your fields be 3 feet tall, by the way. The optimal thing to do is keep them 6-8 inches tall and graze them in small areas there)

**** Thank you for the amazing response, doctors now arranged ****

HELP PLEASE!! We are in desperate need of a doctor for our International Horse Trials running on 18th to 20th August. Regrettably, our previous pool of doctors have decided to stand down from the sport and despite best efforts we have to date found no replacements. Can you help or know someone who can?

The requirement is for the doctor to have up to date trauma training. Insurance is provided through the event, and we pay all expenses and a fee.

Please either DM or email [email protected] or ring on 07831 893100

Thank you
