🛑 A Hutch is Not Enough 🛑

Rabbits need more than a small hutch to thrive🐇 Confining them to tight spaces is cruel and harmful. Here’s why:

🐰 Solitary Confinement: Rabbits need space to run, jump, stretch, dig, and forage, as well as a bonded mate for companionship.

🐰 Weather Exposure: Small hutches offer little protection from the elements, leaving rabbits vulnerable.

🐰 Room to Rear Up: Rabbits must be able to stand on their hind legs without touching the roof to avoid spinal issues.

Minimum Enclosure Size: At least 3m x 2m x 1m high—bigger is always better!

"Highly Commended Runner Up" for the RCVS knowledge champion Award 2024!

The hard work of Leanne, one of our nurses, was recognised by the RCVS recently. She completed a "well conceived, organised quality improvement project which will benefit the practice and improve client care".

Leanne used a process audit to assess our repeat prescription processes. This led to an improvement in pharmacy organisation and stock rotation, as well as a reduction in waste.

Well done Leanne!

FUN FACT FRIDAY

Did you know that feeding puppies a suitable diet is imperative to their growth and development?

Puppy diets have all the nutritional requirements necessary for supporting healthy bones and joints. If fed a complete balanced puppy diet then supplements are not necessary.

Healthy treats in moderation can make puppy training fun and rewarding!

Our nurses offer monthly puppy checks until puppies are 6 months old where they are happy to advise on feeding your puppy correctly. They will also check for healthy development and maintaining a good weight - this is great for socialising your puppy in a veterinary environment in a positive way.

Pictured below are two of the current Donview Puppies, Angus the black lab and Sadie the cavalier king charles spaniel.

FUN FACT FRIDAY

Do you know the three Q's of colostrum management? To make sure calves get the most out of colostrum remember the three Q's

-Quality - it is important to test colostrum so you can decide whether it is sufficient quality for your calves. This can be done by using a Brix Refractometer.

- Quantity - If a calf can't suck a bottle or drink the full amount you may need to use a stomach tube to ensure they get the correct amount. The recommended quantity for their first feed is 10% of their body weight.

- Quickly - A new born calf must get the right quantity within 2 hours of birth. The efficiency of antibody absorption from colostrum declines rapidly from over 40% at birth to less than 5% by 20 hours.

FUN FACT FRIDAY

Did you know that most ginger cats are male? Due to genetics, there are a lot more male orange cats than female. That's because a male cat only needs to inherit one dominant gene for red hair carried on the X chromosome from their mother to be ginger. Since females inherit two X chromosomes, it is possible for them to inherit more than one dominant colour genes which forms the fur patterns known as tortoiseshell, which are almost always females.

Ginger tom cats father tortoiseshell or ginger females. If both parents are ginger, then their kittens will all be ginger!

As you know our practice cat, Ginny, is ginger - making her a rare female ginger cat!

FUN FACT FRIDAY

Did you know that as temperatures rise, so does the risk of flystrike for our fluffy companions? Flystrike, a potentially fatal condition, occurs when flies lay eggs on a rabbit's fur, which then hatch into maggots and feed on their flesh.

🔍 Keep a close eye on your rabbit's hygiene and living environment, especially during warmer months. Regularly check for any signs of soiled fur, wounds, or unusual behaviour. Prevention is key: ensure your rabbit's living space is clean and dry, and consider using flystrike prevention methods recommended by your vet.

🚨 If you suspect flystrike, seek veterinary assistance immediately. Early detection and treatment are crucial for the well-being of your furry friend. Let's keep our rabbits safe and flystrike-free this summer! 🌞🐇
