David Gabriel
It is with great sadness that we write to inform you all of the untimely passing of our much loved and valued colleague and friend at Phoenix Equine, David Gabriel. David passed away on Tuesday morning this week.
David had been on sick leave from the practice for a couple of years but he fought back from this with his characteristic enthusiasm and positive attitude with the aim of returning to the job that he loved - providing veterinary care for the horses and clients in the South West. Unfortunately David became seriously ill before Christmas and was admitted to Derriford Hospital where again he battled his illness with positivity and a sense of humour and made steady progress, which made Tuesday’s news such a shock to us all.
David and his wife Liz moved to Devon in 1990 and David worked in our area for 34 years. He became a partner at Gabriel and Grills in 2001, later to become Filham Park Veterinary Centre. David and Steve Grills were responsible for overseeing the design and build of the new small animal and equine facilities at Filham Park which opened in 2004; we are so lucky still to be able to use the lovely equine facility that was his vision.
In 2019 David joined Phoenix Equine and was, from the start, an enthusiastic supporter of the practice. He was a ready source of entertaining stories from his many years of practice and had a great and sometimes mischievous sense of humour. He had a huge practical experience gained from his years in practice but was also always keen to advance and learn as the art and science of veterinary medicine developed and changed. We feel so privileged that he so wholeheartedly engaged with us in the early years at Phoenix and played such a large part in making Phoenix Equine what it is today.
Most of all David was passionate about the horses he treated and about the clients he served, many of whom became firm friends and fans.
Our thoughts are with his wife Liz, with whom he enjoyed a long, loving and happy marriage and who supported him so well and so tirelessly during his weeks at Derriford.
David was held in extremely high regard by his colleagues at the practice and his clients. He will be very sadly missed.

❤️ to give a bigger picture about what fantastic blood lines (Fernando) carries, a gelding out of the same stallion, Ramexico, is still going strong at the age of 22.
Coedfryn Jack Flash owned by Rachel Thomas is still eventing and putting in lifetime best performances - most recently at Rectory Farm Unaffiliated One Day Event. Originally booked to do the event on her daughter's green, part-bred New Forest Pony, they decided that the course looked a little bit big to be inviting enough for a first ODE, so made a late substitution and Flash stepped in to show how it was done.
And wow, he did exactly that - scored a lifetime best of 21.8 (78.25% dressage score), and jumped an easy double clear to finish in 2nd place on that score, only 0.5 points behind the eventual winner.
Rachel has owned him since he was 16, only having started taking riding lessons 10 months before buying him.
Rachel is currently competing him at Novice level UA dressage (regularly scoring over 70%), about to step up to Elementary, and dabbling with Medium at home. He's still progressing - a great advert for the stamina, soundness and longevity of the Ramexico bloodline.❤️
Freyas Deja-Vu has done it again
Congratulations to Andrew Milne for producing her to a high standard. 2 firsts and champion again.
