Stuck with your training? Try this🤷🏽♀️👉🏻 Impulse control 👉🏻 Commands in motion 👉🏻 Proof engagement and commands around distractions 👉🏻 Proof “leave it” command if this is something you are working on.👉🏻 Inspired by a dog sports routineI do not say “leave it” as I expect him to only focus on the reward directly with me - either a ball or food. If your dog shows any interest in the toys around them - a firm no can be used and then remove the toy from them and place it back down. This is completely normal if it takes a few reps to help them understand the aim of the game. I use the marker word yes or “get it” when he can receive his reward. #dogs #dogtraining #ukdogs #dogreels #dogsdaily #dogtrainingtips #dogtrainingadvice #dogtricks
AVOID THESE MISTAKES⬇️1. Stop letting your dog off-lead because it’s easier than managing them on the lead. If you’re avoiding teaching them, then how can they improve? 2. Start in a boring environment before moving to one that is more distracting. Walk your dog with the consistent intent on focusing on loose-lead walking and notice the difference within a week!3. Practice engagement games before walks in new places. Always carry high value food as this is a high value command! 4. Give them a break and let them sniff every now and then instead of expecting a perfect heel for an hour straight.5. If you are using tools like a slip lead - make sure you are positioning it correctly and you have taken the time to teach them how to turn off the leash pressure! If you are using the thicker slip leads they are not that effective - slip collars are a lot better!#dogs #looseleadwalking #dogtraining #ukdogs #dogsofinstagram #dogslife #happydog #dailydog #dogreels

DOG TRAINING MYTH #2⤵️
Smaller breeds still need training, it gives them structure and mental stimulation which they deserve! You would be surprised by the potential they have😉
The term “small dog syndrome” is simply an excuse for a lack of proper socialisation and training. Barking excessively is not just a small dog trait, it’s a form of reactivity that could have been curbed from the start.
Group Sessions or Neutral Pack Walks are extremely beneficial for all breeds, especially smaller dogs. It can reduce their fear of bigger breeds, as they learn to work along side them and strengthen their neutrality.

DOG TRAINING MYTH #3⤵️
Yes, it is partly true that some behaviours are just part of the puppy stage. However, that doesn’t mean we just ignore them. As responsible dog owners, we owe our dogs the understanding of healthy boundaries to protect them and others.
Biting, Destructive Behaviours, Leash-Pulling, Over Excitement, Jumping up…the list really does go on! In order to curb bad habits, we need to ask ourselves:
1) Does my dog understand the word “No”?
2) Am I being consistent with my corrections and reward?
3) Have I clearly communicated what I want from them instead?
4) Am I giving them healthy outlets for their energy or satisfying genetic needs?
5) Have I spent time teaching them how to be calm in various scenarios?
If your answer is yes to all of them, the likelihood is you just need to be patient and persevere or look for some guidance from a trainer! Dog’s aren’t robots but if you are looking for some help, we can offer it either online or in-person!

Everyone wants to achieve perfect off-lead obedience and freedom in and out of the house, but overlooks the important role that a lead plays in reaching that goal.
Dog barking and creating havoc in the house? Dog doesn’t sit or do a down when asked - even though they know what it is? Dog struggling to understand a position or movement? Teaching recall? Dog running away with items they shouldn’t have or won’t engage in play with you?
Use your lead! Leaving it on them while supervised isn’t a bad thing!
Teaching lead pressure allows us to guide our dogs through scenarios and commands, clearly communicating what we are asking of them. It stops any tension of man-handling them in the house, creating healthy boundaries and giving us control to stop any trouble!

Nothing changes… if nothing changes!
We can’t expect our dogs to be any different if we don’t proactively make changes for the better to help them progress!
This could be a change in your dogs routine, the way you feed your dogs meals or structuring your day differently to make time to work on building engagement together… for you and your dog to improve and succeed in anything, it takes teamwork and a change from YOU before anything else.
Thoughts? What’s something you changed or switched up which helped you achieve your goals with your dog?

DOG TRAINING TIP #2⤵️
Carrying chicken and ham everywhere you go for the rest of your dogs life is NOT the dream. Yes, food is extremely important when training a new behaviour or revising an old one. But what about all the behaviours we just expect? We should still be reinforcing them but with physical praise instead - letting them know they’ve done a great job!
Introducing physical praise into training sessions, prepares you for the times you don’t have the treats and makes the food rewards just that touch bit more valuable! This is why marker words, when conditioned correctly, have a powerful use. A marker word is a word we pair with food when training our dogs. Our go-to words are “Yes” or “Good” as they are short and snappy. When conditioned correctly all you will need to use is the marker word for your dog to understand they have done a good thing! Partnered with a scratch behind the ears, a pat or a chin rub!

HOW TO: SWITCH🐾This is a trick we will be learning together! Six is a 10 month mali and although he knows the basic position change, it could still do with a lot of practice to really neaten it up😊 👉🏻 This can be great for creating space for your dog, walking down the high street or if you use a pram! Practice in the environments where you want them to do it! 👉🏻 Remember to use high value treats like chicken, pate, roast beef or chicken frankfurters! 👉🏻 Once you’ve mastered going from one side to the other, practice going back to the original side! Dog’s aren’t great at generalising so you will need to practice going both ways and switching in motion - once you’ve mastered going one way then ‘switch’ it up🤩👉🏻 You can teach it so that the left hand side is “heel” and the right hand side is “close” using the same technique! SOCIALISATION⤵️
Engagement and Neutrality go hand in hand, without engagement it is typically impossible to have neutrality especially around lots of fun distractions! If you need some engagement tips, games and overall guidance - get in touch with us today!🐶
👉🏻 Does you dog understand sit or down? Can they hold it for long periods of time? If yes, move to the next step!
👉🏻 Teach the command “place” using a portable matt that you can take everywhere to designate their space. @taylor_and_floof have some lovely designs!
👉🏻 Pretend you’re in a restaurant at home by using your meal times to reinforce calm behaviour with rewards and praise, while they are close to you or under the table.
👉🏻 Practice in the real-world. Attend restaurants/ cafes during quieter times gradually increasing the exposure.

Dog Training Myth #1 ⤵️
Dog Sociability is a wide spectrum from reactivity to being overly-social. A dog that runs up to every dog it sees with little regard for their owners calls is NOT a norm anyone should be aspiring to.
We want to find a middle ground with our dogs. Where they can act independently of dogs around them, they can control their impulse to play or walk up to unknown people/dogs and can remain calm and engaged with their owner.
It is important to remember neutrality is a skill that has to be trained. Some dogs are naturally socially-selective due to their personality type, breed, age or gender. It is okay for dogs to need boundaries as well and as their owner we should advocate for that, we can work on it with them but it’s also okay to just accept them for who they are.
We live in a time where the overly-social, under-trained and definitely out of control dog is always right because they are “just friendly”. Dogs have their own ways of communicating boundaries and it’s important as an owner to be aware of that fact when walking your own dog or letting your dog engage with others.

HOW TO BE LIKE KAI
👉🏻 Get a Groomi! No this is not an ad but it is a personal favourite! It effectively removes the build up of hair and dirt preventing irritation and itchiness. If you are having issues with hair everywhere, this safely removes the undercoat without damaging the skin (like some brushes) and it works on ALL coats!
👉🏻Build positive association with high value treats. Allow them to sniff the brush and take breaks when needed. Reward them for sitting still and staying calm!
👉🏻Make it part of your regular routine! As they become accustomed to the feeling, it gets easier everytime. Cooperative Care is extremely important for a number of reasons, it promotes positive association to being handled while keeping them healthy and happy!

INTRO: CRATE TRAINING
👉🏻 Make sure the crate is big enough for them to stand up and move around.
👉🏻 For the first few days leave the door open, feed them in there and leave water in there.
👉🏻 After walks, training and playtime put them in their crate so they positively associate downtime with being in there.
👉🏻 Leave a bed in there, and DO NOT leave a bed elsewhere in the house. You can hide treats in there or give them lickmats, kongs, snuffle balls ect so they actively go in there and stay in there.
👉🏻 NEVER open the crate when they are crying, if you do they will learn that crying allows them access out. Wait for them to stop and be silent. Don’t only put them in their crate when you’re leaving, this can lead to negative associations with the crate.

NEUTRAL WALK HACK⤵️👉🏻Spend 10 minutes engaging your dog through play, practicing known commands and of course treats! 👉🏻Reward for eye contact, stopping when you stop, walking by your side and any other desirable behaviours. This is one of our members working on building engagement before their first ever neutral pack walk! This is new to Ronnie the Sprocker; being surrounded by dogs, new smells and distractions, but they did so well! Their goal is to reduce Ronnie’s pulling on the lead and he made massive improvements for his first time! It is important for anyone struggling with loose-lead walking to ask yourself - Does my dog understand leash pressure? Remember dog’s aren’t born with the innate knowledge of how to walk on a lead. They need to be taught what it is and how to respond to it. So starting walks with this little trick can make all the difference, keep consistent and don’t give up! #ukdogs #dogs #dogwalk #dogwalksuk #packwalk #dogwalker #dogtraining #looseleadwalking #reactivedogs #anxiousdogs #dogsofinstagram #dogsoftheuk #dogtrainingtips
ANSWER DOWN BELOW⤵️ All our members have a variety of goals - at the centre of all is neutrality to dogs, people and environments! We foster a safe space for all whether it’s reducing reactivity, promote calm behaviour or proofing commands with distractions!😊 👉🏻Promotes positive interactions and builds confidence during sessions, learning to work around other dogs safely and calmly. 👉🏻Enhances focus + engagement as our dogs learn to pay attention and listen to their owners even in the presence of distractions, strengthening owner-dog bond. 👉🏻Promotes responsible ownership by educating owners on their dogs body language, while teaching them how to address any behavioural challenges. 👉🏻Preparation for real-world scenarios where they will meet other dogs and people, ensuring they respond appropriately and calmly.

Balanced Training is 98% “R+”. The other 2% are fair, non-harmful corrections allowing us to clearly communicate the difference between yes and no. Followed by lots of praise, rewards and affection! Dogs can be effectively taught healthy boundaries and manners while increasing reliability of commands through leash pressure, withholding rewards, verbal corrections like “ah ah” or a stern “No”. There are also legal tools that allow us to fairly, clearly and consistently guide our dogs through various scenarios, while applying the four quadrants of operant conditioning. We don’t believe it’s fair to judge owners and their dogs on their chosen training method. All dogs are unique with their own individual needs and abilities. Some dogs need more guidance than others, and as long as their dog is happy and they are seeing positive progression on their training journey - who are we to judge! As some background; 1. Positive Reinforcement We apply this through play or treats whenever a command or behaviour is exhibited that is favourable. From simple eye contact to following through on a command. 2. Negative ReinforcementRemoving pressure on the leash when a dog is walking next to us or when they sit/down, reinforcing the behaviour. (and then followed by positive reinforcement!) 3. Positive PunishmentA stern “no” or a low pitched “ah ah” when our dogs engage in undesirable behaviours like chewing things they shouldn’t! 4. Negative PunishmentIgnoring the dog when demand barking, removing the desired social interaction to reduce the barking behaviour or withholding treats when a dog doesn’t follow through on a command. #dogs #balancedtraining #balanceddogtraining #dogtraining #dogtraininguk #dogclub #ukdogs #happydog #dogsofinstagram #dogreels #gsd #obedience #dogstrainingadvice
