What does training look like?

Sometimes seeing a dog of a particular breed, size or colour can trigger another to react. Stella can find little black floofs too fun and they get her over-excited. Here she is playing a nice sniffy game, learning to relax around them.

Sometimes, training is having a nice snack and a sniff with friends. Top marks girls ✅

Sounds easy but because it’s so easy it’s something a lot of people skip teaching.

Get this right and it will help your recall no end! 🏃‍♂️

🎾 New balls please! 🎾

Does your dog like playing fetch?

Dora loves any game.
Ellie couldn’t give two hoots! 😂

Lots of dogs love fetch and it seems like a great way to tire high energy pups out. Some dogs can get really obsessed with ball play so keeping games short (3-5 throws) then the ball goes away, and play find-it or a calm sniffy game to wind down again.

Jumping and twisting to catch the ball can cause injury so a great alternative is hide and seek with the ball. Will pop a vid up next week of our hidey game.

Smashing the double loose-lead walk 🤩⭐️🚶‍♀️

Dora is doing brill at loose-lead so she’s walking on her collar now. Im happy with this as she doesn’t pull or strain her neck.

Ellie will stay on a harness just in case she has one of ‘those’ days 🤪. Rare but still wouldn’t want her putting pressure on her throat if she does react to something. She will be on a harness forever.

20 mins road walk each way today, and pretty much like this the whole way 👏❤️👏❤️👏

“The straw that broke the camels back”

What have camels got to do with dog training?

You might have heard the phrase ‘trigger stacking’ in relation to dogs. Some people talk about filling buckets, some call it too many spoons… (dog training can be a confusing world 🤷‍♀️). But the principle is always the same.

What we’re trying to say is, your dog will cope better with something new or scary when they’re having a good day than when they’re having a bad day. The same as humans, when we’re having a good day and something small goes wrong we can brush it off, maybe even laugh about it. If something goes wrong when we’re having a bad day, it’s overwhelming, maybe even to the point tears.

Dogs are the same as us,
in that their coping ability changes based on their experience, their mood and their environment.

When they’re overloaded, just like that camel, one teeny extra thing, which on its own might have been no problem, can push them past breaking point.

If you know your dog has had a stressful day. Give them a rest, some nice calming licking and chewing activities, and let them chill. You can go tackle those challenges again another day.

Ever wondered how your dog sees the world?

Because of the make up of cones and rods in their eyes, we can assume that dogs have yellow-blue dichromatic vision.

That means they see mainly two colours, yellow and blue. Anything else will seem grey to them.

(No wonder they don’t like high-viz!!)

Next time you’re picking out toys for your dog, think about how they might see it. Go for colours that they’ll see!

Testing out some of the new products 😋

Licking releases calming endorphins. I recommend using something like this when your pup is getting over excited and needs some help to wind down. It’s a nice stepping stone between high-energy activities and sleepy-time.

Also great for general enrichment, building confidence in new things, making meal times more fun, and slowing down those who inhale their food!

These were freebies, but I only recommend products I genuinely like. And happy to say these passed the test ✅

Sleep 😴 Is your dog getting enough?

Dogs need between 12-16hrs of sleep a day. With more people working from home, dogs who were used to having quiet time at home during that day are now constantly alert and watching. I mean who knows, you might pop to the kitchen or take them for a walk at any moment! Better keep an eye on you!

Making sure your pup has a proper place to rest, their own bed where they will not be disturbed can really help those dogs who are always on high alert.

It’s still ok for them to come on the sofa for a snuggle with you though ☺️

Where’s your dogs favourite sleeping spot? Do they have their own bed?

😩 Do you feel like your dog struggles more than most?

👩🏼‍🎓 Sometimes it’s not as simple as teaching a new cue. Your dog might be too overwhelmed, anxious, worried or stressed to take in what you’re trying to teach.

❓When this happens we have to dig a bit deeper to understand why.

🚀 Behaviours consultations give us the opportunity to delve deeper in to what your dog is thinking and why they do what they do. Then we can come up with effective strategies to help get you to the next level of your training.

☎️ If you feel like you and your dog need a bit of extra help, I can help. Get in touch via link in bio.
