Pain is whatever the patient says it is. If you know a dog struggling with hyper-arousal - check for gut discomfort and imbalances, do blood tests and book a vet physio or some scans with your vet to see is your dog actually in pain.
Note to trainers and behaviourists - Bull breeds will often show pain in hyper-arousal, it could even look like ‘gameness’. Grabbing is often a big indicator of discomfort for me and sadly this is often mistaken as a ‘genetic need’. The grabbing behaviour we see often in Bull breeds was developed through a trauma response as a mechanism for subduing the bulls they were pit against. So when they are in pain or feeling under duress this is often the behaviour we see, the dogs who showed more gameness through pain survived and were bred from. Outlets are important but make sure you’re not just providing an outlet without look at the actually need. #dogtraining #dogbehaviour #caninecommunication #caninebehaviour #ethology #dontbullymybreed #xlbully #americanbully #bannedbreeds #pitbull #staffy #mastiff #dogs
Same post with better spelling 🤪
My greatest teacher. I’ve had many dogs come through my doors, but Piglet cane at a time when I was really ready to listen, learn and change my behaviour.
Touch is an interesting one, since doing the amazing ACE course from Tilley Farm I have experimented with more light and slower touch. This is maybe something I would do differently now, 4 years on from this video.

If you’ve been made to feel like the only way to walk your big dog is by using a grot/french collar, slip lead or prong collar - I’m here to show you there is another way. As a small female, it may seem impossible that as a small or big human, you can walk dogs without uncomfortable equipment but it’s true, you can. In fact there’s lots of training you can do with any dog and there is no need to implement pain or fear to ‘gain respect and control.
If this resonates with you. Get in touch 🐕
Regulation, impulse control, low arousal state… lots of squirrels and no prey drive. Some would describe her as a high drive dog, when really she was a dog in a dog in a chronic state of high arousal and little skills in emotional regulation. 4 years on, no aversive tools and here we are - processing squirrels and living with a cat.
If you want your dog to have better emotional regulation and impulse control, get in touch 🐶 💕

How I walk my dog to make sure she calm and happy throughout the day. Also to ensure I am acting responsibly as her caregiver - - Allowing her to make choices and lead the walk (if I need to move her in a different direction, I will call her name, say ‘this way’ and reward her for following me with high value food). - Allowing and encouraging her to sniff. - Keeping the line loose and attaching this to a harness. I will post the equipment below.
Loose lead walking. 33kg dog and a 10yo child. Move with the dog. No prong in sight. #dontbullymybreed #
Dog’s with big emotions. How we work♥️
Young Ricky has a lot going on and shouts about it.
The tail shape in this video is some of the body language I aim to see. Note: the flooring, bit slippy for his tootsies and will cause further tension in his already uncomfortable body. Part of draining his stress 🪣 is putting down a rug. Remember trigger stacking starts before you leave the house a lot of the time. So we need to start draining the bucket at home before a dog can find emotional safety outside.
If your behaviourist or trainer isn’t setting up Sarah Fisher’s Freework for you nervous/reactive/aggressive/over-aroused dog that’s a 🚩
Calm the nervous system before and after you train.
This 13yo staffie girl was physically abused and tied up and left by her owner in public yesterday. She is fab with other dogs and needs a retirement home close to southwest london. All vet fees will be covered by @protectedpawsanimalrescue thank you kerry for saving her!
A little lose lead training video with Trixie from last winter. Stage 1. No yanking, no slip lead and no overstimulated dog. Chilled session with a lovely family. 💕
It was the first of the first round of my puppy induction course at Medivet yesterday. This was the pilot and it flew! What a beautiful transition the puppies and owners went through. Amazing to see and I’m very privileged I was asked yo start this.
This course entailed no place commands, no sits and no stays. We covered the different realms of engagement, over and under-stimulation, socialising your puppy in the right way, how puppies learning the world, avoidance body language and much more. What a privilege and what fabulous students 💕
Piglet’s disengagement from other dogs has taken a long time. For a long time she was only able to walk with other dogs whilst carrying a ball and would be pretty much constantly trying to play/slightly on edge and manic but manageable. She is still like this with a lot of new dogs ESPECIALLY if the owners are scared and hover or if I walk with another person with or without their own dogs. However on my own I can walk her with other fairly well-rounded dogs offlead with no ball. Alfie and his patient ways have been a big aid for this achievement. So shoutout to Alfie for being a solid hunk. Also a side note, you may notice that after 5 years Alf is off the long line and tracker. I gave up on trying to train him like a normal dog a couple of months back (trying train recall with a german pointer is pretty inane I found) and I started to just watch him on the tracker and let him go where he wanted. I then started to ‘train’ him like a deaf dog. No commands just check ins. Guess what, it worked better than I could have expected 🤪
Little Barbara is a wonderful little dog, did some offered engagement with her and it settled her flight response. All in all I love my life 💕
Just because…
I want to thank @southeastdogrescue_rehome and @niallnewhope for this perfect Pig barging her way into my heart ♥️ These are 2 fabulous non-destruct resuces.
I’ve also been fortunate enough to shadow/harass their behaviourist @thevegandogtrainer (legit one of the best behaviourists to bless this earth) for close to 5 years. I would never have gained the knowledge, understanding and compassion based management skills without this woman!
I just want to shout out how grateful I am for this fantastic network of real animal lovers.
Please donate to these rescues if you can 💕
