We were very excited to receive this video of Pipsqueak and her foster mummy Darla! 💕

Darla has had foals before so we knew she would make a lovely foster mare. She hasn’t lost a foal this year, instead we artificially ‘brought her in to milk’ using hormones.

A beautiful outcome to a sad situation. It’s lovely to see them bonding so well John Biggs - Biggs Sports Horses!

𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗙𝗢𝗔𝗟 𝗙𝗥𝗜𝗗𝗔𝗬!!

We would like to introduce Mac, our little (tiny) miracle foal! Mac was born 11 days ago incredibly premature at only 297 days of pregnancy. Normal pregnancy length is around 340 days, and foals born earlier than 320 days often don’t make it.

Mac has been through a lot in his first couple of weeks. We were very worried he wasn’t going to make it born so early and tiny but he is doing amazingly well. A testament to his super dedicated owners!

Our work is predominantly ambulatory, with stable facilities for reproductive work, lameness, poor performance investigation, minor surgeries etc. .....

𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗙𝗢𝗔𝗟 𝗙𝗥𝗜𝗗𝗔𝗬!!

How amazing is this!! Kerry the wonderful foster mare at Mickley Stud has now reared more than 10 Thoroughbred foals that have lost their own mums, each time alongside a foal of her own. Mickley are the first stud we know of to have tried this technique, and it certainly seems to be proving very successful.

We’re a bit late posting this week…

Meet this gorgeous Shire mare and foal that came to stay with us this week, owned by Arclid Shires and Clydesdales.

Did you know that Shire horses are a rare breed, now classed as at risk by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. We feel very honoured to be part of breeding these majestic animals.

Many of you will already have met Jordanne (Jordi). She joined us in January, just in time for the start of the stud season!

Jordi is a fourth year vet student and has joined us for the year. She loves all things foals! As well as lameness and poor performance investigations. Jordi is helping us with clinical procedures, assisting with our daily stud visits and taking care of inpatients.

𝗖𝗔𝗦𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗞!

Rupert had a very early start this morning at Willlow Wood Stud, delivering this filly by emergency caesarean section. Due to birthing complications there was no time for mum and foal to be travelled in to a hospital, this had to be performed straight away at the stud farm.

Sadly the mare had serious complications whilst trying to give birth before Rupert’s arrival and she didn’t make it.

A foster mum (who lost her own foal yesterday at another stud) was quickly paired up with this gorgeous filly, the fostering process went very smoothly and we’re so pleased to see them bonding well.

Caesarean’s are very rarely performed in horses. This was a very sad case but we were very lucky to be able to save the foal and have a good outcome for this pair. 💕

Our vets have had their first handful of 28 day heart beat pregnancy scans this week, at our Thoroughbred studs. Exciting times ahead!
