Are you aware of blue-green algae?
What you need to know:
⚠️ Blue-green algae are tiny bacteria found in
still, nutrient-rich water.
⚠️ They produce toxins harmful to dogs; about
half of exposed dogs die.
⚠️ Most poisonings occur from drinking or
swimming in freshwater lakes and ponds.
Symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, muscle
tremors, and seizures can appear within an
hour.
⚠️ Prevent poisoning by avoiding risky areas,
checking algae warnings, and rinsing dogs after
swimming.

We have an announcement to make about White House Vets team.
We will be saying good bye to Richard and Rhiannon at the end of this month:

Richard is taking full retirement. We are very grateful that he has stayed working one day a week since his retirement a few years ago. As the founder of White House Vets, he will be greatly missed by us all, and by many of our clients, that have been bringing their pets to Richard for a long time! Richard's last day is the 29th of July.

Head Receptionist Rhiannon, will be finishing at White House on the 31st of July. Rhi joined the team in 2020, amongst the Covid lockdown stresses! After a few fantastic years getting to know you and your gorgeous pets, she is starting a new journey, exploring careers in nature conservation. We are very sorry to see Rhiannon move on, she has been a wonderful team member but we wish her well in her new endeavours.

DID YOU KNOW?🤔

Rabbit ears turn 180 degrees and they have almost 360 degree vision!
Rabbits are prey animals so they need very good hearing and eye sight. The rotation of their ears helps them pinpoint the location of a sound!

We hope you enjoyed this week's rabbit facts! If you have a rabbit and want to keep them up to date on preventative health care, why not sign up to our Rabbit pet care plan?
For £9 a month, you can keep them up to date with vaccinations and parasite preventatives. They can also have 6 monthly health checks and you can get a discount on any further treatments they need. Call the practice for more information

DID YOU KNOW? 🤔

Rabbits "binky" when they are happy!
"Binky" is the term used for when your rabbit does that excitable hop in the air where they twist their body and kick their legs!

Vets Now thank you for this very helpful infographic. This week is going to be VERY hot for the UK, that means playdates across the board to ensure I keep your doggos as safe and cool as possible. Don't forget, the heat affects our furry friends differently. They can only regulate their temperature through panting, blood vessel dilation and sweating through their paw pads. Unlike their human besties, dogs don't have millions of sweat glands all over their body and that makes them much more susceptible to heat exhaustion and heat stroke which can be fatal. Let's keep our pooches safe in the warm weather and look out for signs of heat stroke and over exposure.
Remember: if the weather is humid, their ability to cool via panting is inhibited further as effective evaporation of moisture is reduced.

Signs of Heat Stroke in Dogs:
*Excessive and fast panting
*worried or fearful expressions as they struggle to maintain their body temperature
*restlessness or agitation, pacing
*drooling/foaming saliva
*red gums/tongue and inflamed tongue
*increased heartrate
*vomiting and diarrhoea

If your dog displays these symptoms, get them to a cool, shady area immediately. If available to you, provide cool airflow via hand or electric fan. Use cool water (not cold-it'll impede the evaporation method by constricting blood vessels in the skin) to pour over their core body to bring their temperature down. Offer them cool water to sip.

If your dog is suffering from heat exhaustion or heat stroke, do the above to cool them down while you call your nearest veterinary surgery to inform them of your visit. Do NOT cover the dog with a wet towel or blanket, it will trap heat rather than allow it to escape. Laying the dog on top of a cool wet towel may help instead.

Don't forget! If it's too hot outside, your dog's paw pads can burn which not only causes very painful sores, blisters and burns, but impedes their ability to regulate their body temperature further.

Try to stick to walks in earlier mornings and later evenings when the temperatures have cooled.

Stay safe out there! 🌞
