Welcome to JC Dog Behaviour & Training. All training and behaviour modification is done through ethical, modern, science based training that is fun for both owner and dog. My name is Jo and I have grown up with dogs since the age of 3, my first family dog was Sasha a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Being a young child at the time I didn't get involved in any of Sasha's training but I do have fond memo

ries of going on walks with her and my Dad. Our second family dog Khizer, another Staffy, is still living with us today. I was Khizer's main trainer, taking him to the local dog club at 14yrs old where my Grandad was a trainer. When Khizer was around one, he developed some aggression towards myself while we were on holiday- this is where my passion for dog behaviour really kicked in! We saw a behaviourist who gave us the information needed to ensure we were all kept safe, Khizer included. Fast forward a few years and I started studying Animal Management and Welfare at Moulton College, part of this included a work experience placement at my local dog club where I assisted with classes. I then went on to study BSc Animal Behaviour and Welfare at Harper Adams University, graduating in 2018. Since graduating I have been working at Leicester Animal Rescue, giving me more essential hands-on experience with all breeds and personality types of dog. I also adopted my first personal dog from the rescue, Tom, who has taught me the best way of training is through fun, games and love! At the rescue Tom portrayed as very ignorant, independant and non-affectionate... What a different dog he became once he got home!! I have had many training challenges with Tom, some of which we are still working on to this day, but each day with him my heart grows bigger. He really is my once in a lifetime dog. So that is my story so far! I am a proud member of the institute of modern dog trainers, the pet professional network, pet dog training instructors & a provisional member of the association of pet behaviour counsellors. I am continuously learning and expanding my knowledge of dog behaviour so I can provide the most up to date methods and best support for my clients. Please don't hesitate to get in touch for any behaviour and training needs.

This is becoming a welfare issue!

Im tired of hearing “the vet says there is no pain” by a guardian after they have taken their dog to the vet. It leaves me deflated and frustrated and feeling so sorry for the dog.

Myth Bust:

PAIN CANNOT BE RULED OUT IN ANY ANIMAL (dog, cat, horse or hamster), by anyone!

* A quick palpation - CANNOT RULE OUT PAIN

WHY?

The dog may shut down due to environmental factors or dislike of a strange human touching them, they keep still to get it over with ASAP!

The dog may be over aroused or overwhelmed by the clinical environment (excited/scared etc) to the point that adrenaline is so high it blocks pain!

* Blood Tests - CANNOT RULE OUT PAIN

There is currently NO blood test that can detect pain.

* Diagnostic imaging - CANNOT RULE OUT PAIN

Yes they can pick up a variety of conditions, but even the GOLD standard MRI doesn’t pick up everything, but NONE of them can detect PAIN.

Just because a source cannot be found doesn’t mean there is no pain.

PAIN is subjective, it is whatever that being (human or animal) perceives it to be!

Pain can come in many different forms, it is extremely complex, and can effect the individual in many different ways. A dog may get injured, the injury may have healed, but the pain remains … this is known as maladaptive pain.

Behaviour can be a HUGE indicator for PAIN:

* There could be a change of behaviour that has been directly caused by PAIN.

* There could be a worsening of behaviour due to an increase or new presence of PAIN.

* There could be a lack of “normal” behaviour due to PAIN.

* There could be behaviours that are present but that the guardian/owner don’t deem to be problematic that are indicators of PAIN.

* The dog may have ALWAYS displayed behaviours that are indicators of PAIN, but they have been ignored and put down to “just the way they are”.

* There may be NO problematic behaviours at all …. And the dog might still be in PAIN!

* The dog might be energetic, always on the go … and still be in PAIN.

* The dog might be lazy … and still be in PAIN.

* The dog may zoom up and down stairs … and still be in PAIN.

Diagnosing PAIN is not simple and can be difficult to get on top of.

A PAIN relief trail can be great! But often only one type of analgesic is tried and sometimes this doesn’t get results leading to the ASSUMPTION that there is no PAIN!

Here’s why:

* The drug was only trialed for 2 weeks - when living with chronic pain it can take longer to relieve. 2 weeks is not enough.

* The drug used wasn’t targeted to the type of pain the animal is feeling; soft tissue, bone, nerve or a combination of all.

It might take a number of different medications or a combination OVER TIME to see a difference.

ALWAYS keep in mind, NO ONE can rule out another being’s PAIN.

NO ONE. Not me. Not you. Not a Doctor. Not a Vet.

Beautiful Tilly had her behaviour assessment today! 🐾

Her family would like some help with Tilly’s barking & lunging at traffic, barking at dogs to say hi, barking at the gate/phone noise and whining/barking when the family is separated out and about 🐶

Looking forward to helping Tilly reduce the need to shout at everything 🙈

Back at it after a fab holiday!

First up was Daisy and working on her reactions to bikes, joggers and men. Definitely a win today and we were able to watch triggers going past within a few feet with no reaction 🙌

Then little man Toast had his assessment. He finds the world scary (so would I if everything looked giant to me!!). So we’ll be working on his confidence around traffic, helping his mum feel more confident when interacting with other dogs and building a better relationship with his human brother 🙏

🐶 Holidaying with my reactive dog 🐶

Going on holiday with a dog who struggles around other dogs or people can be a daunting task. Holidays are meant to be relaxing so being on edge all of the time wondering what trigger will appear next is just exhausting!

I love going away with Tom, mainly because I am very picky about where we go and plan things so I know we will both be able to chill out.

Some of the things I look for are:
🏡 Self catered whole property dwellings - e.g not a B&B or hotel!
🌳 Secure garden with 6ft fencing
🐾 “Off the beaten track” type walks from the door or short drive away
🛌 Dogs allowed on the furniture and beds
🌲 Huge bonus if they have secure private land for dog use too
🐕 This year I’ve also had to make sure exempt dogs are allowed and that they have muzzle/lead free areas

We’ve had the most amazing week away at Dogs Love Holidays with Tom’s best friend and I am so proud of both doggos for adapting to living together for the first time!

Harnesses make dogs pull?!

So many people, trainers included, will tell you that harnesses make dogs pull.

I guess mine and all of my clients are just faulty then 🙈

Does anyone else have a faulty harness?

🐾 Stress free walks for reactive dogs 🐾

If you have a reactive dog and your daily walks are always filled with stress, it’s highly likely your dog isn’t enjoying them. I’m a huge believer that all dogs should be able to enjoy walks with as little stress as possible. They NEED this time to “be a dog” so their well-being doesn’t deteriorate.

I drive my reactive dog to walking places most days so that he can have his needs fulfilled. Does this mean we never work on his reactivity? Of course not!

I make sure that we also do specific training walks in busier locations so that we can keep working through his frustration around other dogs.

If you’re struggling with reactivity and want some professional guidance please get in touch 🐶
