It’s not been a great week for grooming dogs. Our poor old van has been marooned across the road in the snow and ice since Tuesday. As a result, we have had to cancel almost a week’s worth of grooms. The vast majority of clients have been very understanding, but we want to explain why we make the decision to cancel …

1. Road safety – our van is our livelihood. If someone slides into us (or vice versa) we won’t be able to source a replacement while waiting for insurance assessment and/or repairs. We could end up unable to work for weeks or even months.
2. Access - in some cases it’s because we cannot physically get off our road (we live on a hill which doesn’t help). But even if we can, many of our clients live on ungritted side streets or rural roads where access is an issue. So even if we can get to a client’s home we may not be able to park safely and if we cannot park, we cannot groom.
3. Public safety – bathing dogs generates surplus water, and we don’t have a holding tank, so it has to go somewhere. Releasing it onto a frozen street creates more danger for everyone.
4. The dogs’ comfort – when the temperature dips below zero it’s hard to heat the bath water and enduring a lukewarm bath in a chilly van is far from a pampering experience.
5. The quality of the groom – grooming takes intense concentration. One slip and it’s easy to injure a dog. But it’s not possible to groom to your best ability when you are just too cold or worried about driving to the next client.

When we cancel a day’s grooms, we lose our income for that day and that’s not an easy decision, but it’s the right one. We have to put our safety – and that of your dogs – first!

The van is parked up, the bath is empty, the chocs have been opened and the year is a wrap. We are now closed for Christmas. It's been a strange year but a good one, and we would like thank all our lovely clients for their support over the last 12 months. Here's to a brilliant 2024. Our doors reopen on January 9th and we look forward to seeing you all again then. For now, though, a very Merry Christmas from Robbi and Ed - and from our Christmas card stars Erik and Poppy.

A few of this week's dogs with a definite colour theme... Belka (main pic) is a glorious mix of German shepherd and Samoyed and she's still just a pup. Then we have Rigby the Maltese, Oska the Westie and Daisy, a sweet mix of Lhasa and Maltese. All sparkling white after their groom session with Ed!

We are ending the week with three of our favourite floofs, sporting their hot-weather haircuts. Toby (left) is a CockerTzu, who shares his mum with Jasmine (bottom right) and two other pooches. Jasmine may only have one eye but it doesn't spoil her looks and she doesn't miss a thing! Tillie (top right) is an older girl but looks like a pup when Ed's finished with his clippers.

Very relieved to say that Ed's mum is home and feeling much better - and Ed is back grooming from today. We are contacting everyone whose dog was or is due for a groom and plan to catch up over the next couple of weeks. Once again we have had some incredibly kind and supportive messages. We really do have fantastic clients and appreciate your care and concern.
In the meantime, here are a few we did earlier - that is, some dogs that Robbi groomed while Ed was away. Meet Franco the Labrador, Storm the Husky and lovely chocolate Lab Mabel. It was challenging swapping phone and laptop for brushes and drier - not to mention driving that great big van - but Robbi will be taking on a few more grooms over the coming weeks and looks forward to meeting you and your dogs face to face.

** UPDATE: Unfortunately Ed is still in Turkey and his mum is still in hospital and really unwell so we don't know at the moment when he will be back. I will update again on Saturday afternoon.

** URGENT INFO UPDATE **
Due to an ongoing issue with his mother's health and care, Ed has had to fly back to Turkey so he won't be available to groom any dogs this week. If you have a booking, we will be in touch to rearrange. It likely we will need to move all of Ed's bookings on a week. Sincere apologies for the inconvenience but once again, this is something beyond our control

This pretty girl is Maisey. Now Maisey's not a great fan of grooming but she's a Bedlington which means a regular cut and style is de rigeur. Today was her third groom with Ed and she has relaxed enough to use his hand as a chin rest. It's lovely when a dog trusts you this much. Bless you Maisey :-)

Here's Rosie. She's a gorgeous little rescue girl from Pendle Dogs who has a lovely forever home with her mum Vera and we have the pleasure of grooming her every few months. Like most Westies, Rosie knows her own mind but she is such a sweetheart with Ed. And those ears!

EXCELLENT NEWS - WE ARE OPEN AGAIN!
Ed's mum has come through her surgery much quicker than expected. She is home, cooking and cleaning and keeping the family on their toes - so Ed has been able to fly back to the UK and pick up his clippers. Mum still has test results and follow up treatment to contend with but so far everything is looking good.
We start back grooming from today and will be contacting everyone to rebook as soon as possible. A great big thank you to all of you for your patience and kindness and wonderful messages of support. It has been a huge boost to both of us to have such lovely thoughtful clients.

UPDATE - GOOD NEWS
Ed's mum has had her operation and is well on the road to recovery, so Ed is returning to the UK and we will be back open for grooming from next Wed May 17th. I am contacting all clients directly but just wanted to say a big thank you to who sent us such lovely get-well-soon messages. It makes all the difference to have your support.

Eds & Tails Dogwash will be closed from May 6th to at least May 14th. Ed has spent the first few months of 2023 going back and forth to Turkey where his mum has been unwell. The hoops he has had to jump through to get treatment for her make us really REALLY appreciate the NHS. She is scheduled for surgery on Monday May 8th and Robbi is flying to Turkey this weekend.
All the dogs booked in from May 9th will have their appointments moved on by a week to 10 days. And the same will apply to the following week and so forth. We know this is inconvenient and we apologise - all clients are being contacted individually. But we just wanted to update you all and thank you for the many messages of support we have received since mum's diagnosis in January. It's lovely to have such kind and generous clients.
If you need to contact us please send a message via our page or email [email protected]. We cannot text or call from Turkey due to the high charges so will need to do everything online.
We will keep this post updated.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Due to the ever-increasing cost of living, Edsandtails Dogwash will be raising our prices from Tuesday April 11th 2023. It's not an easy decision but everything has been steadily rising in price - from insurance and van maintenance charges to shampoo - and we have been mopping up the extra costs since last autumn. We cannot afford to do this anymore. We will be increasing our prices by £2-5 and this will depend on the breed and coat type of your dog. We apologise for doing this but we have no option if we wish to carry on trading, and I hope all our clients will understand and accept our decision. We will continue to offer a convenient and bespoke grooming service and we really do appreciate and thank you for your continued support.

Since Monday night's devastating earthquake, many people have asked if Ed's family in Turkey are OK. They are. They live many 100s of miles west of the earthquake zone. But it could have been them as a fault line runs beneath the town we once lived in and nowhere is truly safe. Among all the tears and heartache there have been some truly inspiring stories, like this little dog pulled from the wreckage of a building after 60 hours with so much love and care by rescuers who risked their lives to do so. Even if you don't understand their words, the tone of their voices says it all. The unstinting efforts of the rescuers in Turkey and Syria, the resilience of the survivors and the countless messages of support show, without doubt, that there are still good people in this world. If you can spare a few pounds to support the rescue effort then please do. Yes, the people made homeless by the earthquake need blankets and nappies and shoes but cash gets there so much faster and the price of a takeaway converted into local currency could feed a family for more than a week. And that is what they need right now. We have donated via DEC (www.dec.org.uk/appeal/turkey-syria-earthquake-appeal).

Just wanted to say a great big THANK YOU for all your kind comments and messages over the last couple of weeks. Our closure was due to Ed's mum being taken ill. He has spent some time with her in Turkey and everything is now looking much brighter - but it's hard when your loved ones live so far away.
We are now back up and running and trying to catch up with cancelled grooms. This may mean pushing back some bookings a week or two and we will be in touch to rearrange. We apologise for the inevitable inconvenience and for taking longer than normal to respond to enquiries. We will get there in the end. And we are hugely grateful for having such lovely caring clients :-)

***IMPORTANT***
Due to a family emergency, Ed has had to fly to Turkey and Eds & Tails Dogwash is currently closed. If you have a booking up to in the period up to February 3rd I will contact you to advise and rearrange. It likely we will need to move all bookings on by at least a week or two. Bookings from February 7th onwards may also be delayed. If you are enquiring about our services, please contact us via Messenger or email, or send us a text or voicemail, and we will get back to you as soon as we can. Sincere apologies for the inconvenience but this is something beyond our control.

As we prepare to close for Christmas, it's time to thank each and every one of you for all your support for us over the last year - and your patience when weather, health and mechanical issues have been against us. We appreciate each and every one of you. We have some new plans for the New Year so please keep an eye on this page after we reopen on January 10th. For now, though, we wish you a calm and cosy Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year. All the very best, Robbi and Ed ###

This is Norman. Officially he is a Goldendoodle although we think of him as a great big cuddly bear. His coat is lush and his owner looks after it well. It is such a pleasure to be able to do a Doodle groom that's not a short comfort clip and to work with such a happy and handsome boy.

This very handsome chap is Snoop, a gorgeous little Shetland Sheepdog who is always happy to see Ed.

NEW SEASON'S RESOLUTION: POST MORE PHOTOS!
We seem to have got out of the habit of posting pictures of the dogs we groom so it's time to change all that. We have some lovely shots from the past couple of months so will get posting today, starting with young Heidi the Schnauzer who is helping to create an excellent advert for the van! Our favourite photos are all about happy dogs rather than haircuts! So if we have groomed your dog and you have a good photo, please send it to us and we will pop it on the page.
