What the FRC says……..

Client Data & Confidentiality

The farrier - client relationship is founded on trust and in normal circumstances a farrier must not disclose to any third party any information about a client or their horse. This duty also extends to the farrier’s employees. Care should be taken that client data is stored securely, and also destroyed when no longer needed.

Farriers should also remember to seek client consent before taking photographs of animals, especially if it would be possible to recognise those animals and therefore possibly the client in any subsequent use of those images. Clients should also be informed about the ways any images may be used and further consent should be sought before images are used for other purposes.

Insurance…….The Farriery Registration Council

Farriers are required to be covered by professional indemnity insurance which must cover their professional activities. Farriers will be asked to confirm they hold professional indemnity insurance by self-certification via the Annual Return. The FRC may conduct a random check of farriers’ professional indemnity from time to time, and by asking for conformation of insurance details if a farrier is referred to the investigating committee.

Farriers are strongly encouraged to take public liability insurance appropriate to their needs, and must have employer’s liability insurance where employing others.

Farriers are also advised to check with their insurer whether they are covered to work on horses not attended by their owner.

The Farriers Registration Council……. Registered Farriers……

Owners often ask a farrier to catch, tie up and release a horse before and after trimming or shoeing. Farriers are not required to do so but if they choose to accept these additional tasks and the associated risks they must perform them with all due skill and care.

Farriers can request clients to provide a suitable environment in which to carry out work. These might include a clean, dry standing with with good light and a non-slip surface. A secure safe ring to which the horse can be tied. Protection from the rain, wind and weather. A properly fitted, sound head collar/halter with a good rope of adequate length. Competent assistance should the farrier require it.

Difficult Horses. Farriers are advised not to commence or continue working with an animal if it is felt that the present temperament of the horse, or the conditions the horse is kept in are unfavourable to a successful outcome and/or that the health and safe of the farrier or others, including the horse, maybe compromised by proceeding. The farrier may request the horse owner or keeper to seek assistance from a veterinary surgeon.

The farrier-client relationship should one of mutual trust and respect under which a farrier must fulfil certain obligations.

The main functions of the foot

* Provides a weight bearing surface not easily worn away
* Protects the sensitive internal structures of the foot
* Maintains moisture in the foot
* Provides grip
* Acts as a shock absorber

The sole should be firm, uniform in texture and slightly concave. It also naturally exfoliates as does the frog which is designed to weight bear, but also acts like a pump moving the blood back up the leg towards the heart.
The bulbs of the heels are important in shock-absorption.

Tendon and Ligament Top Tips…….

* Be familiar with your horse’s legs
* Don’t ignore any tendon swellings as it’s often a warning sign
* Avoid fast work on heavy, hard or uneven surfaces
* Exercise regularly. Remember to warm up and down
* Varying training helps to avoid accumulative leg less
* Avoid over tight, restrictive bandages and remove boots/bandages asap after exercise

Over stretching of tendons and ligaments can cause the fibres to rupture. This may be accompanied by heat, pain and swelling. Call your vet if you think it’s a tendon injury.

An ultrasound examination is used to assess the structure and how much damage has been caused to the tendon or ligament.

It’s better to be safe than sorry as the recovery can be long and requires a lot of patience.

Treatment will initially involve box rest, cold application, use of support bandages and anti inflammatory meds.

There is a massive market out there for oils and moisturisers! I tend to use a cheap and cheerful hand cream moisturiser and I get some benefit from applying it too! Kevin Bacon is another I use. I’ve even used olive oil if I’ve nothing else. Slap it on in the summer months as often as you can to help prevent feet drying out and cracking. Feet are a product of their environment so they naturally change from season to season and the conditions they stand in.
