Meet lovely Meg!
She was presented to Earlswood just over 2 weeks ago with acute onset of hind leg paraparesis (partial loss of hind leg function) and obvious back pain.
Following a hemilaminectomy to remove extruding disc material which in turn resulted in instant good decompression of the spine, Meg was discharged just a few days later.
Although slightly wobbly she is doing incredibly well in her recovery and is coming to HolisticPet for follow up rehab.
This is Meg in her first underwater treadmill session last week only one week after surgery!
I think we’d all agree she is doing brilliantly.
P.s guess who has a 13th birthday next week! 🐶🥳🎉

Meet the very handsome Gunner who’s just had his 1st birthday! 🎂🥳
He was recently diagnosed with hip dysplasia but with the help of acupuncture, laser, a home physio plan and underwater treadmill he’ll soon be feeling so much more comfortable.
Hip dysplasia is an inherited condition that results in abnormal development of one or both hip joints while a puppy is growing.

Lenny had his first acupuncture session during the week 😻
He is quite the timid boy but as you can see he really enjoyed it.
His owner noticed the early signs of arthritis - not being able to jump onto the kitchen counter quite as easily and occasionally missing.
Preferring to be let in through the door instead of climbing through his usual window and not playing or bringing in mice 🐭🙀
Since his treatment he’s been playing with his TOY mice in the living room and purring louder than ever 😸😻

We love this success case from last year!
Parker was presented to us at approximately 3 weeks old with a diagnosis of swimmer’s syndrome.
🐾Also known as turtle pup, flat puppy syndrome or twisted legs.
🐾A rare, usually genetic condition that affects newborn puppies and kittens.
🐾The pup is unable to stand or walk and will lie flat on his stomach with legs splayed. It can affect front and/or hind-limbs.
🐾As the pup is unable to stand, the only movement is a paddling action which looks like a swimming motion hence the name.
🐾As the chest is so flattened the heart and other organs can be pushed into the pleural cavity causing difficulty in breathing.
🐾This condition can also cause digestive problems as milk tends to lie in the stomach and is often regurgitated.
🐾With physio therapy, hydrotherapy and sometimes the use of splints it’s often possible to turn these cases around.
Parker’s dedicated family did an amazing job of getting him back on his feet - literally!!
They performed daily, regular exercises as advised by our vet Elsa. They also put water in the bath and used it as a hydrotherapy pool. We were absolutely thrilled with his recovery.🐶 ⭐️ 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🥳🥳🥳

Throughout life there are individuals who really make an impact on you for one reason or another.
For the HolisticPet team, two individuals who taught them so much were Riley and her dedicated owner Cathy.
Siobhan first met Cathy and Riley when Riley was only 10 months old. Cathy had noticed a "waddle" in Riley's gait and wanted to find out if it was significant.
Sadly it turned out that Riley not only had hip dysplasia but patellar luxation (slipping kneecaps) too. And so a team was formed between Riley, Cathy, Siobhan, Riley's primary vets Cedar Grove and not forgetting Riley's granny Patsy, that was to span almost 14 years. Later Elsa, Emma and Sarah joined in to support the original crew.
The aim was to get Riley LIGHT AND FIT and to keep her that way, so that she could cope as she got older and progressed through the stages of Osteoarthritis.
The ladies wanted Riley to have "The Life of Riley" despite her challenges. With the help of Rehabilitation, and in particular therapeutic exercise, we think the teamwork was successful.
Sadly Riley left us for the Rainbow Bridge on the 27/12/23 but I think you can agree that she managed the most amazing , active, adventurous life possible.

Benji strutting his stuff on DISCHARGE DAY💗🥳
Benji suffered a mildly compressive disc extrusion at the start of the year, resulting in hind limb ataxia😢
After some treatment and testing Earlswood Veterinary , it was decided that Benji was luckily able to avoid surgery and started crate rest for the following weeks🥰
Benji came to us to regain his core strength and hind limb muscle mass following his crate rest and is now doing great!😍🐶
Also a big well done to Benjis owners for all of their hard work🥳

The Yorkshire Terrier 🐶
Meet some of the cute Yorkies who are regular faces at Holistic Pet NI. 😍
🐾 This toy breed dog was first bred to catch rats and mice in factories and mines and originated from Yorkshire, England in the mid 1800s.
🐾 The breed was created by mixing the Paisley terrier, the Maltese and the scotch terrier (not to be confused with the Scottish terrier)
🐾 They come in giant, standard and teacup size.
🐾 In temperament they are affectionate and very people-oriented. They can be feisty, brave, and sometimes bossy!
Some famous Yorkshire terriers -
🐾 Smokey was a Yorkie hero of World War 2. He parachuted out of aeroplanes and went on 100s of missions. In retirement he became a therapy dog in VA hospitals to help cheer up the veterans. (Yorkie info center)
