RABBIT AWARENESS WEEK! 🐰

To keep rabbits happy and healthy they need space to run and jump. A minimum
area of 2x3m is recommended for a pair of rabbits, and should be at least 1m high
to allow them to stretch to their full height. This space should be accessible all of
the time, and applies to both indoor and outdoor rabbits.

Flystrike happens more often in warm weather, and in rabbits who have soiled fur (often due to poor diet, obesity or arthritis).

Throughout the spring and summer rabbits must be checked twice daily and any soiled fur cleaned. If you find any sign of fly eggs or maggots you must arrange for your rabbit to see a vet as soon as possible.

🩺 HYPERTENSION 🩺

High blood pressure (hypertension) is common in older cats and dogs. It can be caused by a number of underlying conditions, such as an overactive thyroid, kidney disease or Cushing’s, but can also occur as a primary problem (no underlying cause).

🐾 Why is blood pressure monitored? 🐾

In many pets, hypertension doesn’t have any symptoms until organ damage occurs, so routine blood pressure checks are recommended yearly for cats and dogs over 7 years old or pets with a known risk factor. Untreated hypertension can cause damage to the eyes, kidneys, heart and central nervous system, which is often irreversible.

🐾 How is blood pressure measured? 🐾

Blood pressure can be measured quickly and easily in a conscious patient, if they are cooperative. A cuff is placed around the limb or tail, and a small probe is used to listen to the pulse below this. The cuff is gently inflated to block the blood vessel, then gradually deflated to allow blood flow to return. An average of five readings is recommended.

If hypertension is found on a routine check, investigations such as blood tests and urine analysis may be recommended to check for underlying conditions. Treating any found underlying conditions may lead to lowering of the blood pressure, or pets may need management of their blood pressure as well.

Hypertension can be managed using tablets. Blood pressure will need regular monitoring and checks are advisable 7-14 days after dose changes, to ensure blood pressure doesn’t drop too low. Treatment is lifelong but most pets respond well.

It goes without saying that dogs can help to alleviate stress in the workplace. In fact, a survey conducted by The Kennel Club revealed that 70% of people think dogs reduce stress within a working environment, and even stroking a dog is said to reduce blood pressure!!

How are you greeted when you come back home after being out? (BONUS POINTS IF YOU POST A VIDEO BELOW AND SHOW US)

(Nicola - My dog Ralphie makes sure he sniffs all the animals scents on my uniform that I've left him for at work all day (while giving me the evil stares of 'how dare you abandon me for other animals'), runs away in a jealous tantrum and then gets the zoomies playing fetch up and down the hall with his little fluffy duck toy until he gets tired.)

THIS WEEK IS DIABETES AWARENESS WEEK.

Did you know your furry friends can get diabetes too???

Diabetes causes levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood to be persistently high. Normally when blood glucose levels increase, the pancreas releases a hormone called INSULIN which adds in a number of ways to lower the blood glucose and prevent it from getting too high.

We would love to see photos below of our gorgeous diabetic clients!!

DO YOU CHECK YOUR ANIMALS FOR TICKS?

Ticks can be active all year round, but they are most active in the months April to July, and sometimes later in the autumn. (AKA RIGHT NOW!)

Ticks are small parasites that can attach to cats and dogs to feed from their blood. Generally, ticks are unpleasant, but pose no real threat to health. However, recently there has been an increase in tick-borne diseases in the UK.

Ticks tend to live in:
🐾 Woodlands
🐾 Moorlands
🐾 Places with long grass
🐾 Areas with lots of wildlife and farm animals

If you use a regular parasite treatment that covers for ticks, any ticks that attaches to your dog should die, and drop off within 24-48 hours. However, it’s still sensible to remove any ticks you see to reduce the chance of any diseases being passed to your dog.

Full tick treatment is included in membership of The Healthy Pet Club.

This week is Diabetes Awareness Week!!! (10th-16th June)

Diabetes is a condition that develops when a dog can’t produce enough insulin to control their blood sugar level (causing it to become dangerously high). It’s usually caused when the body attacks and destroys its own insulin producing cells (mistaking them for something else), but can also sometimes develop after suffering from pancreatitis.

In a healthy dog, sugars travel from their food, to their stomach and then into their blood (where they are called ‘blood sugars’). Blood sugars then then provide energy to cells all around the body (such as muscle and brain). Insulin is crucial to get sugar into cells, so in diabetic dogs, who don’t produce enough of it, blood sugars stay in the blood and build up to dangerously high levels (while their cells starve).

Diabetes is an extremely serious condition that without treatment, can often lead to death.

If you are worried that your pet may have diabetes, or that they are showing signs of Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), give us a call on 02882246644 to get booked in with one of our vets!

Do not worry; most well managed diabetic animals that respond to treatment have long, happy lives. However, it’s important to be aware that treatment takes a lot of hard work, commitment, lifestyle changes, a strict routine and regular vet visits.
