At Iffley Vets, we know that visiting the vet can be a bit overwhelming for our furry friends. 🐶🐱 That's why we're committed to making every visit as stress-free as possible! Here’s how we’re helping your pets feel at ease:

✨ Calm Environment: We utilise calming sprays and pheromones in the clinic

🐾 Fear-Free Handling: Our team is trained in gentle, fear-free techniques, ensuring your pet feels safe and comfortable.

🎾 Treats & Toys: We have a selection of treats and toys to distract and reward your pet during their visit.

🚏Waiting Area: We have separate cat and dog waiting areas to minimise stress.

🌟 Quick Check-Ins: We always do our best to minimise wait times so your pet doesn’t have to spend extra time in a new environment.

🚙You can wait in your car until your appointment if this is better for your pet.

🌍 International Homeless Animals Day: Let's Make a Difference Together! 🐾

Today, on International Homeless Animals Day, we unite to bring attention to the countless animals around the world without homes. 🐕🐈 Founded by the International Society for Animal Rights in 1992, this day is all about raising awareness, encouraging adoption, and supporting rescue centres and charities in their crucial work.

Every year, millions of animals enter facilities, many of whom never find their forever home. You can help by adopting, fostering, donating, or even volunteering your time. 🏡💕

Let's be the voice for those who don't have one and work together to reduce suffering and overpopulation. Whether it's through spay/neuter programs, supporting local shelters, or spreading the word, every action counts.

Join the movement, and let’s give these animals the love and care they deserve! 💖

Last week, we had the pleasure of looking after Polo, the adorable French Bulldog, who came in for BOAS surgery. 🐶💙

Our skilled vet Shivana, who has advanced qualifications in small animal surgery, teamed up with Scott to perform this delicate procedure. 🩺✂️ BOAS surgery can be life-changing for brachycephalic breeds, improving their quality of life tremendously. 🐕✨

Congratulations to our new Registered Veterinary Nurse Amy who passed her practical examinations last week. Amy qualified in her home country of New Zealand a few years ago, but needed to complete a few examinations to register with our governing body in the UK the RCVS.

Well done Amy!

🐢🍃 Watch this adorable Hermann's tortoise enjoy a healthy and balanced diet! 🌿🥕 This is "Sq**rt" a rehomed tortoise that was unfortunately handed into the practice after being attacked by a fox. Her wounds have healed and we reunited her with her owner as Sq**rt had a microchip inserted in her back leg. If you need your pet chipping, let us know and we can get you on the right side of the law. This is now a legal requirement for both dogs and cats.

Everyone meet Izzy!

Izzy came in to see us after the owner noticed a dry cough and excessive saliva with tinges of blood. Izzy underwent an oral examination under anaesthetic to allow our vet Tania to have a good look. During the examination, Tania found a small hole underneath the tongue on the right side of the mouth. We couldn't find anything else untoward so we suspect the cause to be an abscess that had burst or a puncture wound from a stick or a toy. The hole was explored and flushed just in case a foreign body was present.

Izzy came back for a recheck today and we are glad to report is pretty much back to normal!

Do you have any concerns about your pet? Give us a call on 01865 242600 to book an appointment.

Grass Seed Season is still very much here!

Lexie came in to see Amanda for an examination in her right ear.
Grass seeds were visible and Lexie required a sedation to safely and successfully remove the seeds and prevent further damage and infection.
There was a small amount of blood where the seeds had started to cause a problem.
Two long grass seeds were removed from the ear canal and Lexie's sedation was reversed.
All was resolved nice a quickly with Lexie being able to go home much more comfortable!

Stay vigilant and keep checking your pets for grass seeds after a walk! Swelling, licking and head shaking can all be signs that a grass seed or other foreign body is causing a problem!

If you suspect your pet may have an issue, please call us as a very delicate procedure may be required!

🧐 Do Ferrets Need Vaccination? 🧐

Absolutely! Just like dogs and cats, ferrets need vaccinations to stay healthy and protected.

Kits should be vaccinated against 💉 Canine Distemper 💉 at around 12 weeks and then have a second vaccine 2-4 weeks later.

Annual Boosters?
Just like dogs and cats, ferrets should also have an annual booster.

Ferrets are highly susceptible to canine distemper, a deadly viral disease that affects their respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems.

High Susceptibility: Ferrets are extremely vulnerable to canine distemper, which is almost always fatal if contracted.

No Species Immunity: Unlike some diseases, ferrets do not have natural immunity to canine distemper.

Contagious Nature: The virus is highly contagious and can be spread through direct contact with infected animals or contaminated environments.

Preventative Measure: Vaccination is the most effective way to protect your ferret from this deadly disease.

🌞 Beware of Heatstroke in Pets! 🐾
Hey Pet Lovers!
As temperatures rise this summer, it’s crucial to be aware of the dangers of heatstroke in our furry friends. 🐶🐱 Heatstroke is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that can affect pets quickly. Here’s what you need to know:
What is Heatstroke?
Heatstroke occurs when a pet's body temperature rises to dangerous levels, usually due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures or strenuous activity in the heat. Unlike humans, pets can’t sweat to cool down effectively.
Signs to Watch For:
Excessive Panting: Rapid or laboured breathing
Drooling: Thick, sticky saliva
Red or Pale Gums: Gums that change colour
Weakness: Lethargy or stumbling
Vomiting/Diarrhoea: Often with blood
Confusion: Disorientation or lack of coordination
Immediate Actions:
If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke:
Move to a Cool Area: Get them out of the heat.
Cool Them Down: Use cool (not cold) water to wet their body, especially the head, neck, and chest. You can also use a fan.
Hydrate: Offer small amounts of water, but don’t force it.
Contact Us Immediately: Heatstroke is a medical emergency. Call us right away for guidance and bring your pet in for treatment.
Prevention Tips:
Never Leave Pets in Cars: Even for a few minutes, temperatures can skyrocket.
Provide Shade and Water: Ensure they have access to cool areas and fresh water.
Limit Exercise: Avoid strenuous activities during peak heat times.
Use Cooling Products: Consider cooling mats, vests, and fans.

Osteoarthritis is incredibly well hidden by our feline friends!

Have you noticed that your cat appears to be struggling to groom their coat?

Darcy and Bruno would like to remind everyone to check your pets for grass seeds!

With all the long grass around at the moment, you need to be extra vigilant when checking your pets!

Seeds in long coated breeds will be harder to spot, so be thorough! Use a brush or comb to help carefully removed seeds.

Check feet - Carefully check paws between pads and toes as grass seeds love to cause problems here!

Check eyes, ears and nose - do not try to remove seeds from these areas yourself. These will likely need veterinary help to remove safely.

Signs that a grass seed may already have caused a problem:
Area is inflamed or painful.
Limping/lameness.
Scratching or shaking head excessively.
Coughing/difficulty breathing.

If you suspect your pet needs our help, call us to arrange for one of our vets to see you!
