Muscle of the Month

⭐TRICEPS BRACHII MUSCLE⭐

The triceps muscle is categorised into two separate parts the Long Head and the Lateral and Medial Head.

Origin:
- Long head: Caudal portion of the scapula.
- Lateral and Medial heads: Shaft of the humerus (lateral and medial aspects, respectively).

Insertion: Olecranon, proteced by the tricipital bursa against the bone, and subcutaneous bursa against the skin.

Action: Extends and stabilizes the elbow.

The most common injuries to this muscle are myofascial tears on the midbelly of the muscle, the tear occurs in the fascia which coats the muscle and allows it to move underneath the skin.

Dysfunctin:
- Holding a front leg bent while at rest.
- Uneven wear on the hoof.
- Uneven stride or lameness.
- Reduction in range of motion.

⭐️ How should our horses back look and feel? ⭐️

Here is a short clip following treatment that shows the softness we should look and strive for through the paraspinal musculature and start of the gluteal muscles. This ‘squishiness’ tells us that the underlying tissues and muscles are free from restriction which allows for optimal extensibility and functionality. A healthy horse is a happy horse.

Treating the lovely Raven today, my first client back after my 5 week injury hiatus (and a rather soggy one indeed).

Raven is one of my favourite and oldest clients, still looking and feeling incredible in his 30s. His owner does the most incredible job at keeping him fit and healthy, it’s hard to believe she almost lost him 5 years ago after suffering a catastrophic leg fracture.

He’s now back out and about and competed in a dressage competition only last week. What a special boy!
