Dogs have fears just like us. Pips fear has always been crowds despite being a social bean. Today was her first final......which meant a ring surrounded with people watching her π only a year she would just lie down in a ring with a few people watching her and refuse to move. This wasn't a nice flowy run but she did what she could do with her fear surrounding her. Beyond proud of her coming 5 out of 6. Yes I know that's pants but to me she was a super star for doing something I very nearly whimped out of doing π#dogtrainingmaud #dogagilitymaud #thistlecupfinal
Puppy class is a lot of brain work π Can anyone guess this poppets breed (pure pedigree not a mix). Couple spaces left on the next puppy block in July #dogtrainingmaud
Having a go at voice over.... tech phobic but not bad for my first go π I always forget to film but Poppy has come so far in learning to read other dogs I couldn't not share. Getting Poppy confident has been a structured process and not just shoving her in with a load of dogs which is known as flooding. Poppy is starting to learn how to read body language and her mum feels like Poppy is now in a place to listen around other dogs. She now feels she has some control to get Poppy back if needed which reduces everyone's stress. Once Poppy is confident we can add more control back in as frustration will be less of an issue and Poppy will be in a place to learn. Lots of hard work but so worth it. Lead frustration is upsetting for everyone but it can be fixed with kindness and patience πΎβ€οΈ
The gorgeous Murphy doing his homework to help calm down his central nervous system. Just like us dogs need to reset. Can you guess his breed? They are rare these days #dogtrainingmaud
My boy did me proud at the weekend. He got his last agility win to go up a grade. Busy show environment for 1st outdoor of the year. He was worried about a dog in the line beside him but he worked through this, (hence start line issues), the ground was wet and I seen plenty dogs slide going towards the weaves so decided to slow him down before the weaves so he had better footing which paid off. A nice clear round #dogtrainingmaud #dogagilitymaud
Wed Agility beginners learning to focus on a task around each other. Agility is a great way to have fun with your dog but also build focus around each other #dogtrainingmaud
Mat training in puppy class prepares pups for every day scenarios. May day weekend means caravans get dusted off. Many parks have rules about dogs so having a dog that chills away from home helps helps everyone have fun #dogtrainingmaud
Is all play good? Rocky loves chase and pups loves to neck mouth. The two combinations don't go that well as rocky running makes pups want to neck mouth more and this is not a trait I want to encourage. Being a terrier this comes natural but can escalate things during play and then play goes the wrong way. Shes a terrier so I need to tweak this which pups did start to do towards the end of this video. Rocky is tolerant for the most part with teaching her but sometimes goes for bowling her over which isn't something I want him to do but unfortunately pups loves this too as opposition reflex then makes her want to get him more. Opposition drive is big in a terrier......get the rat no matter what. I am not giving pups much direction here as its her first visit to the beach so her brain is in over drive. Rocky having a recall (pup got in his way but tough he still needs to get to me which I then had to make clear to him, increased energy in voice) and off cue (he took his mouth off her this is not a stop cue) helps manage this and you can see they do calm down. When to stop play is important. If I had waded in and pulled them apart neither of them would learn to find a balance but I'm not going to let things get worse. Making sure older dog has a good recall - whistle, off (take mouth away) and enough cue (take a break) makes working a puppy easier. Chosing puppy friends especially into teenage phase is so important. Is this video perfect nope but thats happens with arousal. Main thing is both dogs learned something from this. I didn't use treats for this as dogs would of just focused on me. I'm coaching what I want in real life not training here. Training part of walk happened after they had blown off some steam and pups got used to new place/smells πΎ
Maud Agility space - one beginners space available on a wed night @ 7:30pm. This is a 6 week block which aims to boost your dogs bond with you and burn off some of their brain energy. Have some indoor dry fun on a winters evening instead of walking your dog in the dark :) Class starts on 29th Nov ( 2 week break over Xmas). Dogs must be friendly
My favourite course from the weekend. My clumsy footwork (I refused to change into trainers with it being so wet outside π€£) meant rocky faltered in the weaves but he recovered so nicely. I love how we started out the year arguing at weave entries (rocky did all the swearing at me honest) to now he just gets on with it π #dogtrainingmaud #dogagilitymaud
Pip has always been an amazing fast dog at home but a nervous wreck at shows. I gave up on her as a young dog and let her mature before trying again. This year has been interesting. I pulled her as a young dog after walking around TITR show as this is the best show environment you can get. This year she ran around 90% of the course instead of walking just nervous to get on contacts which previously had been her strongest part of competitions and no focus in the weaves so mega babying needed. Aberdeen shows was a mix but she did get her first ever rosette. She is weird as she loves people but doesn't like to being watched. Leaving the ring was an all time low after some progress. After another drop at KOF where I stopped and lifted her out the ring I decided to buy a puppy as competitions ant for her. SO MANY people have told me not to bother showing her. Not that I asked for the advice..... Sunday she showed me though she is still nervous she does enjoy running around so it might be worth keep on treading through her emotions. Dog training is never linear and some sensitive dogs need time to get focused enough to show what they can do at shows. Lots of homework to do over winter so maybe we will keep trying next year as long as Pip doesn't go back to the point she needs lifted out. If she does I will respect her nerves and retire but least I can say we've had a good crack at getting over her stage fright. Love my Chinese cresties but they are very sensitive beans #dogtrainingmaud #dogagilitymaud
I just love watching partnerships grow. Agility isn't always the easiest but its so rewarding especially from me to watch dogs and their owners get better and better #dogtrainingmaud #dogagilitymaud #spanielsofinstagram
Enjoying a rare night off with pups in the pub. Clicker training and then a chew to practice settling in a busy environment #dogtrainingmaud #borderterrier #brewdog
Bruce rocked his 1:1 on Friday. He gets over aroused by people and dogs resulting in crying and pulling to get to them all while ignoring his mum. Hes completed pup and distraction with hi jinks and is back for a top up. Bruce at one point would not take any food as he was so over aroused and would sometimes play with his mum but dogs were mostly more attractive to Bruce. His mum now has more focus tasks to work through and diet advice plus we tried the back pack on Bruce to get him to focus more on his own body plus burn energy. Bruce is starting to make the right choices and pick his mum plus finally relax around other dogsπ He clearly thinks not saying hi stressful so behaviour changes will take some time.
I fell in love with this wee boy during his 1:1. Being a super smart pup he needs to work his brain in the correct ways. He found a scent squirrel in the training area and decided to hide it in the best place π #dogtrainingmaud #rottweilersofinstagram
