Coco is a regular at the groomers for her teeth cleaning sessions, and she’s well-known and adored by me.

Coco is a bit of a diva, enjoying the pampering she receives. She’s familiar with the routine, and while she might be a little fidgety at first, she quickly relaxes once she’s settled on the grooming table. I know her preferences well, using gentle, pet-friendly products that make her comfortable. Coco’s teeth are cleaned with care, and she usually tolerates it well, especially when I talk to her in soothing tones.

After her cleaning, Coco always gets a bit of extra fuss and maybe even a little treat. Her owner picks her up, knowing Coco has been well taken care of, and Coco trots out of the groomers looking fresh, clean, and happy, ready to show off her sparkling teeth.

“I recently completed my dog first aid course, and I’m feeling much more confident in my ability to care for my furry friend in case of an emergency. The course covered everything from how to perform CPR on a dog to treating wounds, recognising signs of distress, and handling common issues like choking or poisoning. I learned how to assess a dog’s vital signs, bandage injuries, and even how to safely transport a dog in an emergency situation. Now, I feel prepared to act quickly and effectively if something ever happens to my dog or any other dog in need. It’s a great feeling to know I can make a difference in an emergency.”

Bertie is a medium-sized dog with a neatly trimmed coat that is kept short all over his body. His hair is clipped close to his skin, giving him a sleek and tidy appearance. His legs and paws are also clipped short, ensuring they’re free of excess hair that could pick up dirt or debris. Overall, Bertie’s short coat highlights his energetic and cheerful personality while keeping him comfortable and low-maintenance.

Please be careful with your dogs in this heat.

With extreme heat this week we thought it would be a good opportunity to remind everyone of the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Remember; if your dog has heat stroke don’t use ice or air conditioning to try and cool them off quickly. It can cause hypothermic shock and be very dangerous. Use tepid water on cloths and set your ac to about 23 degree while you make your way to the vet.

If your dog has any of these symptoms, call your vet immediately! Things can go from normal to dangerous in a heartbeat so keep checking in on your dog if they are spending time outside.

Is it safe to give your pets ice cubes? 🧊

Every year pet owners are warned that ice is dangerous, and that it might send them into shock! However, there is no evidence to support this claim.

Preventing your pet from overheating is really important, so here are some things you can do to keep them cool:

- Put ice in your dogs water bowl to keep the water cool
- Put crushed ice in their food bowl for them to lick

It's always important to remember NOT to give ice cubes to a pet that is suffering from heatstroke. They need water to drink and cool water poured over their body, you should also call your vet as soon as possible! ⚠️

Do you know about the dangers of giant hogweed? 😨

It may look harmless, but contact with giant hogweed can actually lead to serious burns, blisters and long-term skin damage to both pets and humans.

The stems and leaves of the plant contain dangerous toxins, putting pets at risk even just by brushing against it! The toxin is further concentrated in the sap released when the plant is damaged or broken, increasing the risk. Although pets may have some protection from their fur, hairless or thin-furred areas (such as the ears, mouth and belly) can be badly affected 😟

Giant Hogweed can be found throughout the UK. Particularly common along river banks, it flowers in June and July and looks like a huge cow parsley plant. Dogs can come across it while exploring undergrowth, so we’re urging pet owners to keep a close eye when walking their dogs.

If your pet comes across it, be sure to wash their coat well with soap and water, whilst protecting yourself using gloves. And if you’re worried, contact your vet immediately!

[Image description: An infographic explaining the signs and symptoms to look out for that might be an indication that your pet has been in contact with the plant, Giant Hogweed. This includes: Sensitive, red skin, blisters and ulcers, swelling, rashes and itching, excessive licking or scratching, eye irritation, vomiting (if ingested), diarrhoea (if ingested), mouth ulcers (if ingested).]

ALABAMA ROT❗️

What is Alabama Rot?
Alabama rot, otherwise known as Cutaneous and Renal Glomerular Vasculopathy (CRGV), is a disease that affects dogs. It damages the blood vessels in the skin and kidneys, which causes visible sores on the skin and can lead to severe organ dysfunction and ultimately kidney failure.

What causes Alabama rot?
The cause of the disease is currently unknown, though research is on-going. Since December 2012, a small number of cases have been seen throughout the UK.

Most reports come from pet owners who walk their dogs in the countryside, and most cases are reported during winter and spring. Generally, cases are rare in the summer months compared to the colder months.

What are the symptoms of Alabama rot?

The following are typical signs of Alabama rot:

Skin sores, visible swelling, red patch or skin defects not caused by a known injury. These skin lesions typically appear below the knee or elbow, and occasionally on the face or at the bottom of the chest or abdomen.

Changes in appetite - reduced appetite, drinking more, vomiting and lethargy are signs of acute kidney injury.

Can I do anything to avoid Alabama rot?
While it's extremely difficult to give advice about how to avoid Alabama rot, we recommend washing off all mud following a wet and muddy walk, especially through woodland.

Remember, the majority of visible skin lesions will not be caused by Alabama rot disease, and most cases of kidney failure will be a result of another cause.

What should I do if my dog is showing signs of Alabama rot?
If you're concerned that your dog may be suffering, we urge that you contact your vet immediately for further advice. If it is Alabama rot, early recognition and aggressive management are likely to have the best results.

Should I be worried about my dog contracting Alabama rot?

The number of cases reported in the UK is extremely low, so there's little reason to be worried.

Thousands of dogs are walked in the countryside every day, and it's important to remember that only a very small number of dogs have been affected.

The threat is very low, and while there may be an environmental trigger, we can't confirm that some areas are safer than others.

There have been a few local cases of Alabama Rot in the area, however, it is still very rare.

❄ What is frostbite? ❄
Frostbite is damage caused to the skin and other tissues as a result of prolonged exposure to extreme cold.

❄ Who is at risk of frostbite? ❄
Any pet who spends a prolonged period exposed to extremely cold weather has the potential to be affected by frostbite. However, there are some factors which may heighten the risk of your dog getting frostbite:
• Medical conditions that affect blood flow
• Wet fur
• Short hair
• Small in size
• Illness
• Old age

❄ How does frostbite occur? ❄
Prolonged contact with cold temperatures causes the body to close blood vessels that are near the skin to preserve a stable core body temperature.
Blood vessels start to narrow or constrict. Sometimes, this protective mechanism can reduce blood flow to critically low levels in some areas of the body (particularly the extremities). The combination of cold temperatures and reduced blood flow can allow the tissues to freeze, causing severe tissue injury.

You should immediately contact your vet so that they can give the correct advice for your particular situation.

A groomer will check and clean the ears but only a vet can tell you if it’s nite or not. That is why we would always recommend you get checked by a vet. 🐶🐶👂

Ear mites live in the ear canal and on the surrounding skin.

Signs of mites in dogs include scratching around the ears, head and neck, skin irritation, head shaking, the presence of a dark and waxy ear discharge (similar to coffee grounds) and an unpleasant smell.
