Grooming Tips and Recommendations

We can not recommend cutting your own dogs hair unless you are trained, however we understand people need to save money in these difficult times and we often get asked what kit we use, so if you need to give your dog a trim to tide them over…

It would be wrong not to include a disclaimer as cutting dogs yourself does carry risks. You know your dog better than anyone so only you can judge the risk of injuring your dog if they make a sudden movement, you mis-clip or cut or the risk to yourself when they shake wet and cover you with doggy water!

So you want to try? First learn the basics of dog grooming to keep your dog safe and comfortable. We'll cover the right tools, techniques for brushing and cutting fur, and tips for a smooth grooming experience for you and your pet.

Essential Tools

1. Brush or comb: Get a good one based on your dog's hair length, like metal-pinned for long coats or rubber teeth for short hair.

2. Scissors: Opt for sharp, professional-grade scissors to trim hair smoothly.

3. Clippers: Invest in quality dog clippers, as they are safer and more suitable than human clippers.

4. Shampoo: Choose a gentle, dog-specific shampoo, and dilute it with water for easier rinsing later.

Steps to Groom Your Dog

Bathe and Dry

Bathe your dog and make sure they're completely dry before you start clipping. It's best to avoid clipping a dirty dog because it can clog the clippers and make grooming harder.

Cutting With Clippers

Start by using clippers for a faster and safer hair trim. Ensure your clippers are sharp to prevent hair pulling.

Most clippers have guards for different hair lengths. If unsure, start with the largest guard and go shorter if needed.

Address tangles and mats, but be cautious near the skin. Infections can develop; consult a vet if you see redness or swelling.

Trim slowly in the direction of hair growth, and if possible, have someone assist in holding your dog.

Remember, clippers can heat up, so check the blade's temperature and take breaks during extended use.

Trimming With Scissors

Scissors are handy for tidying up your dog's legs, ears, and face. Use the scissor tips for precise control, making it easy to stop if your dog moves suddenly.

When cutting around the ears, hold them down to keep them away from the scissor blades. It's safer to have someone assist in holding your dog steady while using scissors for grooming to prevent accidents.

For shampoo we like the Dezynadog brand for the subtle scents, deep cleansing and gentle on the coat and skin.
