โ STAY
Here is Bailey and his human practicing their โstayโ in Sarahโs class in Plympton.
โญ๏ธ They did a fantastic job here as itโs not the easiest thing for puppies to do, but it is a highly important life skill for them to learn!
๐ถ The pups were working on building their โstayโ durations this week, so that theyโre ready to move on to staying whilst their owners move away next week!
๐ฆ๐ผ Children are always welcome at Puppy School and we encourage all members of the family to take an active part in their puppyโs training journey as it helps to improve their bond and handling skills!
Great job Team Bailey!! ๐
Show a trick!! ๐ฅ๐พโพ๏ธ๐ฆ๐พ๐ถ At the end of our last week of Puppy School the pups are encouraged to show a trick! Check out this amazing trick from Bramble on her last week! She did SO well!! (Spoiler - she did get all the balls in the box but I stopped videoing ๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ฑ !)
Handling with a stranger ๐ถ๐พ At Puppy School in Plympton on Sunday the pups were all having a go at a handling session in which they are handled by a stranger! By setting up the interaction to be a positive one this helps pups to learn that being handled by strangers is a nice experience and not something to be worried about! Here we can see Moose (a little Romanian rescue pup!) being handled by someone unfamiliar. Moose was a bit anxious at the start of Puppy School as heโs had some huge changes in his life (coming over from Romania and moving into a new home with a new family) but heโs grown in confidence each week and it was lovely to see him enjoying the handling exercise on Sunday! Well done Moose!! ๐๐๐๐
Road manners!! ๐โ๏ธ๐ฆโ ๏ธ๐ฃ๏ธ๐โ๐ฆบ๐พ At the Training Academy last week the Level 1 students were all working on their road manners! This is an essential life skill which is really useful for being out and about! Here is a lovely video of Finn with his hoomum doing a great sit, then waiting by the road and then crossing (whilst walking to heel) across the road! Perfect road manners Finn and Laura!! Well done! Road manners is also part of the Level 1 final assessment so Finn and Laura are well on their way to achieving this part of the assessment!! ๐๐๐๐๐
Progression of the chin rest ๐พ๐ฅฐ๐โ๐ฆบ Last week the Training Academy student learnt a chin rest. This week they worked on adding duration to it! Here we can see the progression from Thelmaโs chin rest last week to this week! Well done Thelma! ๐๐๐๐
Chin rest ๐ฆด๐ถ๐พ Check out Thelma who is currently a student at our Training Academy! As part of the TDTS Level 1 the students have been learning a chin rest - here is a video of Thelma trying the chin rest for the first time!! Well done Thelma! Great first attempt! ๐๐๐๐
Boomerang recalls! ๐พ At the Training Academy the Level 1 students were working on โboomerang recallsโ. These are recalls where they run away to get a treat but then quickly return back their handler (like a boomerang). Practicing boomerang recalls helps to speed up recalls but adding in a fun element of chase and then a very quick turn around it increases responsiveness and encourages a quicker response to the recall cue! Here we can see Trudy @trudy_border_collie having a go at this and smashing it! Well done to all of the Training Academy students on their first week of @thedogtrainerschool Level 1! ๐๐๐๐

Last week, the Plymstock pups were improving their recall by running past temptation alley - filled with distractions such as toys and tasty treats! ๐๐พ
Manu did an amazing job here at running past the distractions and coming to his pawrents when called! โญ๏ธ
When the temptations were just too much to resist at first, we tried again using a fun toy, which Manu showed interest in the first time, which shows the importance of picking the right reward to set our pups up for success! Well done Manu! ๐
Remember, thereโs no Puppy School tonight! See you next week for week 6!

Why itโs better to sign your puppy up to puppy training classes than to try and โDIYโ train your pup on your own at home! ๐พ๐ถ

On Week 6 in Plympton, the pups in Sarahโs group were getting used to meeting and being handled by different looking people.
It is really important that puppies have rewarding handling experiences, which we can do by introducing them to all the weird and wonderful types of people they might encounter throughout their lives!
By doing this at the puppyโs pace, watching their body language to ensure they are having a positive experience, we set them up for success and help them feel more confident in future encounters with new people.
Well done to all the pups and handlers who made sure they all had a positive experience! ๐ถ๐
Why we use positive reinforcement at Puppy School and no aversive methods! ๐พ๐ถ
โSTAYโ โ
Check out these amazing stays from Sarahโs group in Plympton today!
All the pups and their pawrents did great at this for their first attempts! ๐
This week we were focusing on building the duration of their โstaysโ, so that they are ready to move onto staying whilst their owners move away next week!
Self control around food at Puppy College! ๐พ๐โ๐ฆบ Last week at Puppy College the college pups were working on self control around food on plates/in bowls. Here you can see Mack is mastering this skill! He knows he doesnโt get food if he tries to snatch it from the bowl but he gets it if he waits for it!! Well done Mack ๐๐๐
Temptation alley! ๐พ๐ถ Check out this amazing recall through temptation alley which Cylas did recently! On week 6 the pups have a go at this really tough challenge and Cylas smashed this! Well done Cylas and your family! ๐๐๐
Children at Puppy School ๐ถ๐ง๐ฆ๐ผ๐ง๐พ๐พ๐ถ๐๐โ๐ฆบ๐ฉ At Puppy School we welcome and actively encourage children to come along to the classes. Children who learn how to train their puppy along with their families feel included and have some joint responsibility for their puppyโs future! Children can join in and learn the techniques which they can then practice at home! Itโs so lovely seeing children bonding with their pups and the relationship building each week. If your child is taking part in the Childrenโs University scheme they can also get a stamp for attending Puppy School classes! Check out this lovely video of Scrapper with his big brother who is attending classes and helping him to learn the hand signal for โsitโ ๐ฅฐ๐ฅฐ๐ฅฐ
Dressing yo and desensitisation! ๐ง๐ทโโ๏ธโ๏ธ๐ฉโ๐ค๐ฒ๐งโ๐พ On week 6 of puppy school last week the pups all had a handling session where they were handled by people who look a bit different!! Everyone brought some great dressing up outfits and the puppies all loved meeting the handlers!! Well done everyone ๐พ๐๐๐๐

๐ถ Last night in Plymstock, the pups in Sarahโs group were advancing their loose-lead skills by learning how to walk around obstacles and make turns, whilst staying by their ownersโ sides.
โญ๏ธ Ottie and Ruby did amazing and didnโt get distracted by each other either!!
๐ Itโs important to use high value rewards when teaching our puppies something new or when adding in distractions if we want to set them up for success.
Puppy School week one in Plympton today ๐พ๐ถ๐ฆด The puppies in the first group were learning about the importance of play and how to play with toys in the right way! Playing with your puppy before doing training helps to build a bond and makes your puppy work harder for you! Hereโs a great video of Parker the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever playing tug with a tuggie toy! Well done pups this was awesome @parker.thetoller ๐๐๐๐๐
โ STAY
โก๏ธ Check out this amazing โstayโ from Blossom in Plympton today!
๐ก Today, the puppies were learning how important it is to stay until their owners come back to them, and working on building the duration of their โstaysโ. Whilst it can be boring for our puppies to sit still and stay, it is a very useful life skill for them to learn!
โญ๏ธ Starting off small is the best way to set our puppies up for success, especially when surrounded by distractions.
Puppy College Week 1!! ๐พ๐ถ๐โ๐ฆบ Last night we welcomed back 5 pups who have all previously completed their Puppy School course and have returned for their next level of training - Puppy College!! Last night the Puppy College Pups were all learning some important life skills - this one was getting on and off the veterinary scales! ๐ฉบ๐ฉโโ๏ธ๐We worked on getting onto the scales then sitting and then coming off again. Teaching your pup this in preparation for the vets is a great way to build up their confidence and enable them to feel safe and happy when theyโre at the vets! Well done to the Puppy College pups Vision, Mabel, Mack, Frank and Nelly! ๐๐๐๐
