Abe and his furry friends ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿน

This weekend I was lucky enough to look after sweet Abe, Amber, Shelby and Harnham the Hamster.

Abe and I explored his local area while Harnham slept and Shelby & Amber sunbathed. We found some beautiful countryside walks with fantastic scenery, then relaxed in the evenings with him being my personal lap warmer! ๐Ÿ˜‚

My Dog Ben ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿพ

Ben is now 3-years-old, he was rescued after being dumped next to some bins in Romania with his litter mates at around 1-month-old .
Unfortunately, this is a common story in countries with stray dogs, due to people not neutering their own dogs and then not being able to keep pups once theyโ€™re born (due to costs and limited numbers of dog-loving households who would adopt them).

Once Ben reached travelling age (4-months-old), Pound puppy animal rescue brought him to the UK and placed him in a foster home. After 2 months in his UK foster home, we were asked to take over fostering him and another similar age pup (Billy).

When Ben came to us he was very nervous. He would hide in bushes on walks, would follow Billy around like a shadow, and would cower away from touch.
Over the 6 months of fostering him, he learned to trust us which let him show his playful puppy side and learn how to receive affection.

Every time a potential family came to see him, his progress disappeared and he became the vulnerable, scared puppy he was before. 6 months was long enough for him to go through this, so I took the leap and adopted him myself.

Ben still has times of being uncertain but with A LOT of training, reading and watching videos he has come on so far. Being a hound type he has an instinctive extreme prey-drive. This, coupled with his nervousness, means I always walk him on a long-line with a Houdini-harness and a tracker. As if he chased something, then became scared, he would likely run to Scotland ๐Ÿ˜‚

I'm always learning how to better myself for Benโ€™s happiness which is part of the reason why I set up HB Dog Services, to share the knowledge and experience I've gained along the way โค๏ธ

For the past few days, I looked after cutie-pie Maggie again. She's a 1 year old, Macedonian rescue, who we fostered as a 5 month old pup.

Over the weekend, we went on long country walks, learned a new trick and had lots of cuddles. Maggie and my Rommie rescue, Ben, get on really well so he joined us a lot of the time which Mags loved.

Can't wait to look after her again soon!

Buster ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿพ

โค๏ธ High energy levels, Lead-pulling, Car-lunging & Prey drive

Buster was a very misunderstood 4 year old stray, rescued from the Macedonian streets.
He was surrendered by UK adoptive families twice in the 3 months of being in the country. The first time for his energy levels and the second due to fighting with their resident dog.

When I brought him home, he was literally bouncing off the walls. He had such a busy brain and didn't know what to do with it. Taking him for long brain-stimulating walks, playing classical music, setting boundaries and just giving off calming vibes soon allowed him to relax. He actually turned out to be a very laid back dog who loved lounging around!

He didn't care about dogs, he'd give them a quick sniff and move on. So we assumed he only fought the resident dog if it had kept bothering him, as he liked his personal space. He got on great with our dogs as they too like their own space.

Then we were dealing with the prey drive, which encompassed the lead-pulling and car-lunging. Both done to try and get to his 'prey'. Distraction and focus prevailed here, teaching him that we were more interesting than lunging in front of a car...

All his quirks which had previously prevented him from finding his forever home improved massively with practice and consistency. He has since found a very loving, patient home who are continuing with his training.

โค๏ธ Barking reactivity & Lead pulling

A few days ago, I met little Hugo who is a 1 year old, miniature Dachshund. His older brother, Rufus, also joined us for the behavioural training session as emotional support.

I was asked to help with reducing Hugo's barking reactivity, which he shows towards some dogs and people.
After walking with them, it seemed that Hugo was quite anxious and barked as a warning not to come near him, rather than as aggression. He also pulled on the lead to get in front of his brother and mum so he could be on the lookout for any potential 'threats'.

I explained to his mum how he was feeling then suggested a few methods which could be used in this case.
Going back to basics with lead pressure would teach Hugo to walk calmly at his mums side rather than pulling out in front. This would make his mind more relaxed and encourage him to depend on his mum for protection rather than taking on the role of protector himself.
I also suggested clicker training whenever he spotted a 'threat'. By clicking and rewarding at the right times he will learn to focus on his mum more and associate 'threats' with nice things.

Now, his mum is set up with the information and training techniques needed to help him overcome his worries and be a more confident little lad โค๏ธ

Togo ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿพ

โค๏ธ Cat aggression & dog reactivity

We fostered Togo in 2021 after his adopters had tried all they could to make it work. He was a Macedonian stray whoโ€™d lived 1 and a half years on the streets. โ€จIn Macedonia, he was good with cats but as soon as he reached his UK home with 5 resident cats, it all went pear-shaped and he was very aggressive towards them. He also lunged/strained on the lead, was SO strong, showed reactivity towards other dogs on walks and was just not an ideal dog for first time owners. โ€จโ€จ

As rescue back up for him, we cautiously took him in, having 2 cats of our own. We worked extremely hard with introducing him to our cats in small increments every single day. Working up, with focus and reward, from muzzle & lead, to no muzzle with lead, to muzzle & trailing lead, to no muzzle & no lead. โ€จHe was such a success story for cat aggression which I learned a lot from. By the time he went to his new home our cats were casually jumping over him while he lay dozing. โ€จโ€จ

I dealt with his dog reactivity in a similar manner. He loved cheese and, at the time, distraction was the best advice Iโ€™d received which worked the majority of the time. โ€จI now have more knowledge which I would have loved to try with him but he found his amazing new family who love him immensely and are continuing to work with him.

Mila ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿพ

โค๏ธ Hand mouthing & jumping up

I got to meet this clever girl today, she's called Mila and is a 1 year old Cockerpoo.

Her Mum contacted me for advice on how to reduce her mouthing peoples hands and jumping up/on people.
After discussing more about her, I decided to make her pen area into her 'chill-out zone'. Similar to the 'Place' command, whenever Mila became too excitable to listen to "No" and her mouthing was getting too frequent she was directed to her pen to bring her energy levels down to a suitable level. We trained her to stay in her pen until totally relaxed, before inviting her out again. The door of the pen was open at all times to allow her to make her own choices.
When calmly invited out of the pen she was much calmer and in a better state of mind. The mouthing and jumping up significantly reduced and she was more receptive to the word 'no' or 'ah' if she attempted the unwanted behaviours.

She's such a smart girl who picked up on it super fast so I know she'll do amazingly with her Mum and Dad's new guidance.

โค๏ธ Anxiousness & lead pulling

This beautiful German short-haired pointer is Betsy. She's a nearly 2 year old girl who has anxiety in the evenings due to her neighbours cat ๐Ÿฑ

While chatting to her mum and dad today we discussed different options which could work to reduce Betsy's evening anxieties, where she growls and whines out the lounge window. Playing classical music, giving her lick mats or frozen kongs, playing desensitising cat sounds over time were all taken on board. But the main thing I suggested would be to create a 'safe area' of the house where she could be directed to go to, to get away from the stimuli. We practiced the 'Place' command for this which she was picking up on after only a few repetitions. We used a clicker to mark exactly what we were looking for from her to boost her confidence.

At the end of the session, I gave some quick lead-pulling advice so Helen and Sam had the foundations in place to work with.

Indi Update ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿพ

Indi's mum sent me this video to show how they were putting into practice what we'd gone through in our session. How great do they look?!

The meaningful "Come", only saying it once, marking with a "Yes!", Indi seems so in tune and focused on the command. And turning her head to check in with her mum as she trots off is so lovely to see.

More practice in low-stimuli areas will set them up for success in higher-stimuli areas, great work guys! โค๏ธ

Indi ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿพ

โค๏ธ Chase-drive, Recall training, Lead pulling

Yesterday, I met sweet Indi who is a 1 and a half year old, Staffy cross.
Her mum messaged me asking if I could help Indi's chase-drive, as she has had to stop walking Indi in areas with other dogs because of it. Indi chases anything that moves fast - other dogs, wildlife or bicycles, even if she can't run she strains on the lead trying to get to them.

When I met Indi she was pulling on the lead, was very distracted by surrounding stimuli and, as such, had little focus on her mum's commands. I suggested we practiced some long line recall to improve their teamwork, to teach Indi how to listen better to her mum and to teach her mum how to communicate more effectively with Indi.

Gentle lead pressure, body language and marking correct decisions soon encouraged Indi to "Come" correctly. To help with her chase-drive, we learned the best time to ask her to "Come", before she had 'locked-in' on her chase target and exceeded her listening threshold.
Over the session, she became much more receptive to commands from her mum and was eagerly learning what was expected of her.

We used the same technique for her lead-pulling which worked amazingly. At the end of the session, her mum mentioned she'd normally be pulling to get back to the car, whereas she was sniffing about and exploring her surroundings โค๏ธ

They're now set up with the knowledge and skills they need to improve their communication with each other, I can't wait to hear how they get on!

Stanley ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿพ

โค๏ธ Muzzles, people-aggression, reactivity

At 2 months old, Stanley was rescued from the Macedonian streets as a stray pup. He spent the next 2 and a half years in many different kennels, adoptive homes and other foster homes.
Somewhere in his messy life, he'd learned to bite people aggressively and unpredictably, and only trust one person at a time.

In May 2021, I picked up Stanley from his last ever kennel and fostered him until his new forever mum was found.
He was a perfect happy dog when just with me, but was cautious of other people so wore a muzzle when we were in public.

Muzzles are amazing things that have a bad reputation. They are not to be feared, but should be respected for the amazing things they do. They warn people to give extra space on walks, they build confidence in the handler of an aggressive dog, but most importantly they keep everyone safe.
An aggressive dog isn't a bad dog, it's just a dog that needs time and understanding.

Over the 4 months of fostering Stanley, I learned his triggers and management techniques that worked to reduce his reactivity. I confess I'd never experienced a people aggressive dog like Stan, but the amount I learned from working with him was invaluable.

Dixie ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿพ

โค๏ธ Nervousness, harness/lead training, fear-aggression

In November 2021, I fostered Dixie who had spent the first year of her life on the Macedonian streets as a stray, with little to no human contact.

Dixie's initial foster mum asked me to take over fostering her as she didn't know how to progress her any further. She'd done an amazing job over 2 months, patiently getting Dixie used to general home life and toilet training her. But sadly Dixie would attack defensively whenever anyone tried to touch her, so her foster mum had come to a standstill at putting a lead/harness on her for walks.

After a couple of days relaxing into our home I started desensiting her, confidently and calmly using the fake hand to stroke her. She would aggressively attack it but I showed no emotion as she had learned before that if she did this then the person would leave her alone.

After she learned that touch wasn't going to hurt she quickly turned a corner. I soon got the harness on her, taught her to walk on lead and finally got her exploring the countryside!

Puppies! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿพ

Over the past few years I've looked after many pups through fostering from rescues. They're all adorable but so much work has to be put into them to set them up for future success.

Teaching them house training, to walk nicely on a lead, to play nicely and not be too boisterous, the list seems never ending. It's easy to feel overwhelmed after buying or adopting a pup.

A couple of weeks ago I looked after this fluffy girl, Maggie.
We fostered Maggie as a 5 month old pup in 2021, through Strays without borders. Before coming to us, she was a stray on the Macedonian streets, found outside a bakery with another pup who has also been adopted in the UK.
We fostered her for only 2 weeks before she found a loving home locally, so it's great that I get to spend time with her again to see how much she's grown!

Together we explored Wareham Forest, Upton Heath & Talbot Heath. Her owners also wanted me to work on her recall, so we did some long line practice which she loved.

Many times a day I would approach the girls. I would mix it up between just sharing their space, stroking them, putting a slip lead on or taking a harness on and off them.

With repetition, they learned we meant them no harm so it became easier to work with them with an increase in trust.
