This evening a clinical case of Bluetongue (BTV-3) has been confirmed in a single animal in East Yorkshire.

We encourage all livestock keepers to remain vigilant and report suspicion of BTV immediately. Early clinical signs can mimic other common conditions such as orf, liver fluke, snake bites, MCF, photosensitisation etc.

Please find more information and photos of affected animals on the attached link.

On Sunday all the Clevedale clinics and departments came together and took part in the Esk Valley Charity Rounders Tournament held at Castleton Cricket Ground. As well as some amazing players we had a great support from colleagues, friends, family and clients.
We are pleased to to say that we came 3rd to some pretty formidable opponents. As well as having Amy, one of our reception team members daughter, crowned as Top Female Batter.
With Dawn leading the charge as team tactician we knew we were in with a good chance.
With special guest star Len making some great plays topping off a fab day.
We must give a shout out to Ghanem who made some spectacular catches.
Congratulations to the winners Danby FC and everyone involved in organising the day an amazing £2,109.93 was raised that will be shared between 4 local charities.

Well its been a while but lets get on with meeting the rest of the team,

Many of you will have met Vicky. She joined the Clevedale in March and has established herself as a key member of our team.

Victoria Coates
BVetMed MRCVS

Vicky qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 2013. Her first job was in mixed practice in Norfolk, where she worked for 4 years. Norfolk is where she met her husband, Freddy, via Young Farmers. Vicky moved to North Yorkshire in 2017 and has worked as a farm vet in Northallerton, before joining us at Clevedale.

Vicky especially enjoys working with cattle and fertility work, but like all farm vets, loves lambing time in the spring!

Outside of work Vicky enjoys taking her two Labradors on walks in the forest and also enjoys playing hockey for Northallerton Hockey Club.

*Haemonchus alert*

We have seen several cases of Haemonchus worms in sheep in the past couple of weeks. Unlike the more common roundworms in sheep, Haemonchus does not cause scour. Instead its blood sucking behaviour causes a severe anaemia. The mild wet weather we have seen recently favours very rapid multiplication of this worm which can lay 10,000 eggs per day.
Adult ewes will not have immunity so can be affected as well as lambs.
The first sign is often collapse or sudden death and the membranes of their eyes are very pale .
Routine monitoring faecal egg counts are so important for picking up haemonchus burdens, speak to one of our team for information on how to carry out sampling.
It’s is also important to post mortem any unexpected deaths as early treatment is crucial to ongoing productivity of growing lambs due to the recovery time from anaemia.

🗣This week we have Josh,

Josh Henry
BVM BVS MRCVS

Josh grew up on a beef and sheep farm near Northallerton. After graduating from Nottingham in 2022 he returned to the area and joined the team here at Clevedale. Josh works across the clinics as a mixed animal vet. His early life on the farm has helped to make Josh a hardworking and enthusiastic farm vet with a passion for all things large animal, where he particularly enjoys fertility work, youngstock health and surgery.

Outside of work he helps on the family farm as well as enjoying the outdoor life and somehow manages to fit in some shooting, fishing, hiking and cycling.

This week it's the amazing Pippa. Many of you will have met Pippa but there's lots to learn about her.........

Pippa Middlemas
Senior Veterinary Surgeon

BVMS CertAVP(Sheep) MRCVS
RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Sheep Health and Production

Pippa graduated from Glasgow University Veterinary School in 2006, and initially stayed in Scotland to work in mixed practice in Dumfries and Galloway. She returned ‘home’ to the North East in 2007 and worked in small animal and mixed practices before joining Clevedale in November 2010.

Pippa has a keen interest in farm animal practice, especially all things sheep, completing her Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice in Sheep Health and Production in 2018. Despite being an Advanced Practitioner in sheep health, Pippa enjoys the opportunity to work with dairy and beef enterprises. She is particularly interested in proactive herd and flock health planning, including strategies to reduce anthelmintic and antibiotic resistance. Pippa loves surgical cases, which is the main reason she still enjoys spending a small portion of the week in the small animal department. Given the opportunity those skills are transferred into farm work too. Outside of work Pippa is likely to be found on a hockey pitch – readers of the Whitby Gazette can follow her team Danby Hockey Club in the back pages. She enjoys exploring the countryside with her young family – hopefully one day the Cleveland Way will be completed!

This week on 'meet the team' its Babs.

Andrew Barber or ‘Babs’ as he is better known, graduated from Glasgow in 1990 and joined Clevedale in 1993 not long after its inception, becoming a partner and having a positive influence on the practice and helping it to grow to what we know today.
Babs has worked almost exclusively with Farm animals, developing strong and long-lasting relationships with the farmers in the area. Over the years he has guided many young farm vets and continues to work closely with our team sharing his wealth of experience as well as keeping up to date with new developments in veterinary science.
Babs enjoys anything to do with cattle and sheep and has strong interests in fertility and herd/flock health.
Outside of work he enjoys watching rugby and life in the outdoors.

New Guisborough Practice coming soon 🐾🐶😺🐰💚

We are delighted to announce that we will be opening a new community practice in Guisborough. Over the last few months, we have been busy transforming a unit on South Buck Way, Cleveland Gate Retail Park, just off Rectory Lane, into a modern veterinary practice and we are expecting to open in early summer.

Over the last 31 years Clevedale has provided veterinary care for the communities in Upleatham, Stokesley and Whitby. With huge demand for the quality veterinary care in the area we are excited to bring a new community practice into the heart of Guisborough.

We are now taking pre-registrations for new clients. Existing clients are welcome to use our new practice and do not need to re-register.

Please follow this link to pre-register with the new Guisborough Practice. www.clevedalevetssmallanimal.co.uk/contact-us/registration/

We are very proud of our team here at Clevedale, so we are starting a 'Meet the team' series, each week we will highlight a team member and introduce you to all our amazing vets.
First up is Dawn,

Dawn Bezuidenhout
Farm Clinical Director
BVMS CertAVP (Sheep) MRCVS
RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Sheep Health and Production

After growing up on a beef and sheep farm in Cumbria, Dawn graduated from Glasgow vet school in 2009. After a couple of years in mixed practice, she moved to Clevedale to pursue her interest in farm animal practice. Dawn thoroughly enjoys becoming an integral part of our clients' businesses focussing on preventative health planning and maximising productivity on dairy, beef and sheep farms. Her particular interest in sheep led to her completing further studies and being awarded a certificate in advanced veterinary practice and becoming a RCVS recognised advanced practitioner in sheep health and production in 2018. Dawn has been part of AHDB's Challenge Sheep project since 2017 and also enjoys spending time teaching the next generation of vets on various sheep topics. Out of work Dawn is kept busy with her two children and small flock of Dutch Spotted sheep and can occasionally still be found sneaking in a game of hockey here and there.

The team have attended lots of calvings this Spring - we’ve had big calves, twins, twisted uteruses, breech calves, heads back, legs back and all sorts of other funny positioned calves.
This is a Simmental heifer which required a caesarean section, expertly performed by Vicky. Happy calf, happy mum 😊

*Nematodirus risk*

Nematodirus risk is the moderate in our area, suggesting hatching may occur in the next week or two. If you have lambs old enough to be grazing, keep a close eye out for scour and treat with a white drench.

Our experienced farm team, which includes two advanced practitioners in sheep, are on hand to help with advice as always.

https://www.scops.org.uk/forecasts/nematodirus-forecast/?fbclid=IwAR2dGxzF-dbofgz63Z6Ha0JH9SqUuXQDp8oWEbbkXjN27yOQLuAQ_FvfD-M_aem_ATANlW57aNEOo4pfnJZneYTX0bpGIIPBWQf--PGGionKW_Xt22PzXJOxdGXvf_k8RvE

The forecast can be used in combination with your grazing history to assess the risk of Nematodirus infection in your lambs.

Wishing all our clients a very happy Easter 🐣. This Easter lamb is bonding with her mother after she needed a bit of help from vet Pippa to be born earlier today.
Our farm vets are on call 24/7 over the bank holiday weekend should you need us.

We are delighted to also welcome Vicky to the farm team at Clevedale. Vicky has worked for many years in the Northallerton area and brings a wealth of experience to expand the Clevedale team. Her passion and commitment to provide an outstanding service to our clients old and new shines through in her work and she is looking forward to meeting everyone.

Don’t forget about the giveaway we have running over the lambing period.

Be in with a chance to win a sheep goody bag.

We have recently introduced a new data collection platform called DIgifarm.
Digifarm allows us to capture data relating to health, lambing, scanning and body condition. We can then use this information to produce reports which can help with making decisions regarding your flock.

To be in with a chance of winning, please email our Farm Admin on [email protected] or if you are having a visit from one of vets they can do it for you.

The competition will run from now until the end of lambing period.

The goody bag contains:

Tally counters
Bottle of Rehydration and lamb pump
Injector for Cevac
Eprecis beanie hat

You’ve got to be in it, to win it!

Did you know that bTB can live in water for up to 60 days?
As we head towards turnout have a think about which of your fields have water troughs that wildlife may have had access to. Empty, clean and disinfect these water troughs to reduce the risk of bTB transmission between wildlife and stock.

Welcome to the team !!
Some of you may have had the pleasure of meeting Rebekah over the last week as she has begun working her way round the area. She has also been sporting our new 'Farm Team' van so you will see her coming.
Rebekah is from New Zealand and graduated from Massey University in 2018. She worked in dairy practice in New Zealand before coming to Yorkshire in 2022.
Rebekah loves working with cattle and sheep, but is happy with anything that requires her to be outside. Calvings and lambings are her favourite job.
I know you will join us in giving Rebekah a warm welcome as she dives into the spring season with us.

10/03/2024

Research is putting more and more weight on the influence of body condition on solar ulcers in early lactation dairy cows. Cows in low body condition at calving, or those who have excessive body condition loss in early lactation have a thinner digital cushion and thinner sole, putting them at greater risk of bruising and solar ulcers.

Metabolic profiling on bloods of dry cows, fresh calved cows and peak lactation cows tells us lots about their energy balance and can identify areas of nutrition that could be improved to lower the risk of sole lesions.

Too many empty ewes at scanning? Or have you had a few abortions? We aim for a barren rate of less than 4%.

Take advantage of subsidised lab testing to look for toxoplasmosis, enzootic abortion or Schmallenburg this spring.
